[06/03/20]   Together, we the members of the Interfaith Clergy Council - Priests, Ministers, Pastors, Islamic Faith Leaders and Rabbis representing faith communities in Syosset, Woodbury, Cold Spring Harbor, Jericho, Oyster Bay and Westbury, with one voice denounce racism. As colleagues and friends, we embrace diversity and stand together in this time of injustice; united, undeterred and committed to ending all acts of hatred and violence. We are committed to teaching our congregants respect of all people.

George Floyd is yet another casualty of a criminal justice system marred by systemic racism, yet another unarmed black man dead by police action that is as inexcusable as it is shocking. We know that the actions of the four Minneapolis law enforcement agents do not represent the majority of the good men and women who are charged with the safety of our communities. But the fact that racism persists within police departments throughout our nation is a disgrace for everything America stands for. As representatives of communities of faith, we empathize with the rage and frustration of those for whom the system so often fails. That our representatives in government must take steps necessary to rectify a criminal justice system that so often fails our friends and neighbors of color is clear. We name what happened to Mr. Floyd for exactly what it was — a sin, a sin against God and humanity. We join in protesting the fact that this pattern of police cruelty has persisted for far too long, and that we have ignored injustices perpetrated for far too long. And just as we raise our voices together with those who protest the death of the innocent, and the political ineptitude of those who do nothing to correct it, we utterly deplore those who choose to rob, loot, and burn commercial and governmental establishments, as some form of legitimate or effective resistance. Such actions are neither legitimate nor effective. They are, in fact, a disgrace to the memory of George Floyd, and fodder for those who would choose to ignore Mr. Floyd’s death and all its ramifications, with the convenient excuse of focusing on unjustified, illegal, and counter-productive violence. If we are to make sure that Mr. Floyd did not die in vain, let us condemn all acts of violence or destruction, and begin the real work of materializing in practice, the principles of faith we all cherish, that we are all God’s children, that we are all fashioned in the image of God, and that we must love each other as we most assuredly love ourselves.
