Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church

Our parish serves as a beacon and witness of the message of Christ through divine worship, preaching, teaching, and living of the Orthodox Christian Faith.

The Greek Orthodox Parish of Loudoun County, Virginia was established on September 22, 2006 by His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos as the 56th Parish in the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey, which is part of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, in communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Our presiding priest is Father George Alexson.

Mission: Our approach to the Christian life is the result of the rich heritage of Eastern Orthodox Christian liturgy, theology and spirituality passed on to us by our Holy Fathers for nearly 2000 years. Our mission as Greek Orthodox Christians is served in various ways: 1. We offer due worship, praise, and thanksgiving to God the Holy Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, 2. Through God’s Grace, we strive to exist in fellowship with God and one another in Jesus Christ, 3. We welcome Orthodox Christians looking for a church home, 4. We welcome, guide, and encourage all who, in yearning for Jesus Christ, seek to become Orthodox Christians, 5. Through Jesus Christ, we strive to proclaim, teach and live the Orthodox Christian Faith, in all that we think, say, and do. Our parish sanctifies the faithful through divine worship, especially the Holy Eucharist and other Sacraments, building the spiritual and ethical life of the faithful. This is accomplished in accordance with the Sacred Tradition of the Church which we have received through the Holy Scriptures, the lives of the saints, and the living history of the Holy Orthodox Church. Our parish serves as a beacon and witness of the message of Christ through divine worship, preaching, teaching, and living of the Orthodox Christian Faith.

We Christians fear neither death nor hell, for as members of His body and His church, we share in the joy and victory of His life-giving Resurrection.

“O Death, where is your sting? O Hell, where is your victory? Christ is risen, and you are overthrown. Christ is risen, and the demons are fallen. Christ is risen, and the angels rejoice. Christ is risen, and life reigns” (from the Paschal Homily of St. John Chrysostom)

Beloved Parishioners and Friends,

As we quickly approach the long-awaited goal of our Great Lenten journey, the victorious Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, I share with you these inspiring verses from St. John Chrysostom’s Paschal Homily. Never before in the life time of most of us have we been called upon to celebrate His glorious Resurrection under such difficult and trying circumstances. Fear, anxiety and apprehension surround us as we struggle to avoid the deadly virus that haunts our world. Our hearts and minds are constantly with our fellow human beings suffering and dying from the likes of an illness not seen in many years. We pray for the sick, those caring for them, their families; for those who have been taken from us and translated to another dimension of life. We plead with our Lord, His holy Mother and all the saints to intercede for us, and enlighten the minds of our medical scientists, to find a cure for this dreadful illness.

It is in the shadows of the threat of this virus, confined to our homes, unable to find comfort in our holy churches, that we will greet the Risen Lord. Let us not permit this terrible illness to overshadow the power of the Feasts of Feasts. Pandemics have come and gone, and so too will Covid19. What will remain is the resilience of our faith, our love for one another, and our trust that our Heavenly Father will not countenance us to endure a cross too heavy to bear. We suffer with patience, acknowledging that all suffering can possess redemptive value if viewed in the light of His cross. Thus, St. John can declare in full confidence that neither death nor hell have a victory here, for that belongs to the Risen Christ alone. We Christians fear neither death nor hell, for as members of His body and His church, we share in the joy and victory of His life-giving Resurrection. Nothing can deprive us of our confidence in His love for us, “for If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Rom. 8:31).

I take this opportunity, my beloved, on behalf of our Parish Council, to extend to all of you our prayers, that this Pascha will be a no less joyous one, but that it will strengthen our faith and resolve to do God’s will and, in all things give glory to His name. I thank you all for your continued support of our parish and its sacred mission; for your encouragement and assistance, which enables us to preserve for all of you the many ministries that enhance the life of our wonderful community.

May our Lord bless you all with good health and life. On Sunday, April 19th, the day of Pascha, let us together shout with mighty voices, Christ is Risen! Truly, He is Risen!

Fr. George A. Alexson
Presiding Priest

Archpastoral Message - April 2, 2020
His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey

Even in the midst of the chaos which ensues throughout this nation and the world caused by the Coronavirus, I implore you to remain prayerful always. St. Paul teaches us to “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks” (1 Thess. 5:16-18). It is his exhortations, especially his exhortation on prayer, upon which we must remain focused since prayer can be tremendously powerful. In prayer, we can conquer passions, repel the temptations of the evil one, and, most importantly, communicate with God. Though we live in a society which has increasingly distanced itself from prayer, as Orthodox Christians we must be fervent in our prayer lives. Prayer gives us the opportunity to open ourselves to God and to place before Him all of our hopes as well as our fears, our thanks as well as our needs, our tranquility as well as our concern.

Every day we receive new updates from our Archdiocese and the Holy Synod regarding the measures we must take to prevent the spread of the deadly virus. The Holy Synod requires us to follow all measures mandated by the county/state in which we live. The CDC recommends no gatherings more than fifty persons, we have complied with the mandate of Loudoun County and have closed our Sunday School and Greek School. Furthermore, all activities at the church are cancelled until further notice.

Given the rapidity with which this virus spreads, and the up-to-date instructions from government and church officials; Father George will celebrate the Salutations and Sunday Liturgy with only the chanters in attendance. Please follow our services and pray with us from home via our Live Stream. This schedule will be kept through April 10th. http://twitter.com/HolyApostles_VA

We are writing with information about changes at our parish related to the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Per Archbishop Elpidophoros, "As we face the COVID-19 global pandemic, let us be courageous and compassionate in our hearts, prudent and rational in our minds, generous and kind in our actions, helping those in need, even as we care for ourselves and those we love. God is with us!"

We will be taking the following actions based on updated guidelines from His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos:
All Liturgical worship services will be held as scheduled. If you choose not to attend services, you can watch our live feed and light a "virtual candle" online with a donation.

All church activities and ministries will be cancelled until the end of the month.
Greek School and Sunday School classes will be cancelled until the end of the month.
We will not have Coffee Hour after Liturgy through March.

We regret any inconvenience, however our utmost concern is the safety of each and every person in our community.

We pray you have a blessed and safe Lenten season during these trying times.
