I was able to get a shot of the Church from my drone when I was in town.
Love the first Hymn. Because He Lives is a message we all need to hear right now.
Instant Pot Black-Eyed Peas

1 Tbsp Olive Oil
1 small Onion, chopped
2 Celery Ribs (Stalks), diced
1 Bell Pepper, red or green (I used some of all 3)
2 small Bay Leaves
2 sprigs Fresh Thyme, or 1/2 tsp dried
1 Tbsp Smoked Paprika
1/2 tsp Black Pepper
1 tsp Coarse Salt, or 3/4 tsp table salt
4 cloves Garlic, pressed or minced
1 Jalapeño Pepper, seeded and diced small
3 1/2 cups Chicken Broth, low sodium
2 tsp Balsamic Vinegar
1 cup chopped cured ham
1 1/4 cups Black-Eyed Peas, dry*. (I used 1# and a little more broth)
2 cups Collard Greens, (optional) chopped in 2" pieces
Instructions
Turn the pressure cooker on to the Sauté function. When the display reads Hot, add the oil.
Add the onion, celery, and bell pepper, and bay leaves. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion starts to turn translucent.
Add the thyme, smoked paprika, pepper, and salt. Stir.
Add the garlic and jalapeño. Cook for about 30 seconds, stirring frequently.
Add the broth, balsamic vinegar, bacon, and ham hock.
Stir in the black-eyed peas, and collard greens, if using.
Place the lid on the pressure cooker, locking it in place. Set the steam release k**b to the Sealing position. Cancel the Sauté function.
Press the Pressure Cook/Manual button (or dial) and use the + or - button (or dial) to select 17 minutes (for firmer beans choose 14 minutes). High Pressure.
When the cooking cycle has ended and the pot beeps, let it sit undisturbed for 15 minutes (15 minute Natural Release), then turn the steam release k**b to the Venting position to release the remaining steam/pressure.
When the pin in the lid drops down, open it and give the contents a stir. Discard bay leaves and ham hock (the ham hock won't be tender, it is for flavor, but if you can get some meat off of it, add it to the pot!).
Serve over rice for a Hoppin' John, or as is. Enjoy with cornbread to sop up that yummy broth! Happy New Year! Or, any time of year!

Below is the plan for the coming year. Please take a minute to add some dates to your calendar, as this is full of exciting possibilities.

What might impact our plans is the continuing pandemic. As of right now, I don’t see the need to change our current practice. Most of the congregation is vaccinated, we have UV light sterilization installed in our vents, and we have plenty of room to socially distance in our sanctuary. So please wear a mask if you have been traveling, and we will continue to gather for worship.

I hope this approach sees us through. If the situation changes, and you will know this as soon as I do, we will increase the precautions we take. But let us cross the bridge when we get to it, and I hope we never do.
Your Servant,
Andrew C**n

Today was a wonderful day for worship as we enjoyed beautiful weather for our Sunday service at the Shelbina Lake. The message highlighted the various gifts we have, which led into a special part of worship. We were honored to have several members of the State EMS Honor Team with us. Some of them will travel to the Washington DC area next week to deliver 150 Teddy Bears! This Is a special project for children who have lost an EMS parent. Brenda and Greg Wright are in charge of this beautiful memorial. The bears were blessed by Pastor Andy.

July 18, during worship at the Lake, we will be Blessing Bears.

And if that sounds intriguing, please read the attached news release. It is part of an amazing project that I am very glad that this church is supporting.

If it rains, we will worship at the Fellowship Hall.

Today we enjoyed a Wonderful Worship Service, a Wonderful Fellowship Dinner, and a Wonderful Retirement/Welcome Celebration. Best wishes to Deb Broeckling as she retires, and Lisa Conrad as she takes on the secretarial position at the Shelbina United Methodist Church! These two ladies are some of the BEST, and we're happy for both of them as they start new life chapters.

This is, by far, the best version I have ever heard of the "Joshua and the Batlle of Jericho" that I know of.

And that is the scripture for this Sunday. I dont know if I can work this in.... but I might. Somehow.

Take a listen.

This is my smoker. Not all that exciting.

BUT - in this smoker are the first batch of pork loins for Sunday. Sunday will be very exciting, as we will be having a meal after worship, thanking Deb for her years of service to the church, and will also be welcoming Lisa Conrad as she takes up the mantle of secretary.

And we all know who actually runs the church. It isn't me.

So please come on Sunday, enjoy a meal after worship, which will be in the fellowship hall.

If you can bring a side, please do so. But there will be plenty, so come and share a meal.

MOAC21 Opening Worship

https://vimeo.com/560967491

This is opening worship from Annual Conference this year - and Fred Leist preached.

It was profoundly good - as Fred grabbed the bull by the horns. There is a lot of grief from over the last year and a half - and Fred took the time to preach to the preachers, the servants of the church, the people who have lead through this time and struggled.

It may be the most striking and powerful sermon I have heard in a long time.

It starts at 49 minutes into the video.

[06/10/21]   A Brief Summer Newsletter from the Shelbina United Methodist Church

Meal for Deb - June 27th

Deb Broeckling will be stepping down as secretary at the end of the month, and to express our gratitude to her for many years of service to this church and our community, we will be gathering to have a meal in her honor. Andy will be smoking pork loins, and the church is invited to bring side dishes. The Board is arranging a gift that people will be able to sign, so we hope you can be there to be part of this expression of giving thanks. We will worship in the Fellowship Hall on that Sunday.

We will also have our new secretary with us that Sunday, and it is someone that many of you will already know. Lisa Conrad has accepted this position, and is already in the office working with Deb so that we have a smooth transition.

One change that we have already made, is that Lisa will be in the office on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, from 9am until 1pm.

Worship at the Lake – July 18th

We will gather at Shelter House #3 on Sunday, July 18th for a time of worship. We are doing this so that we can enjoy the outdoors, and have time after worship to enjoy each other’s company. The church will provide fried chicken, we invite people to bring sides, as well as any lawn games they have. For those who don’t want to play lawn games, maybe some cards? Anyone play pitch?

At this time, we will also bless the bear sweaters that our newest group at the church, “Stitchin’ Friends Sharing Hope.” These sweaters go on the teddy bears that are given to the children of first responders who die in the line of duty. It is very impressive how many sweaters have been made by hand, and we are very glad that we can honor and support this effort.

If it rains, we will head back to the church for worship.

Fish Fry – September 12, from 6 to 8

We are doing another Fish Fry! The Legion has agreed to fry the fish, Donnie Roberts is coming again to play, and we are going to have a good time. Put it on your calendar, and make sure to invite a friend. Then go and pick up that friend, to make sure they can make it.
We do this, so that our neighbors can not only see our church as they drive down the street, but know that they are welcome here. Not only are they welcome, we are ready to love them. And nothing says “I love you” like a plate full of fried fish.

An Event in the Community - Upcoming Garage Sale – Shelby County Right to Life is having a garage sale, June 17 and 18, 6am to 8pm, June 19 from 8am to noon. Shelbina Christian Church.

Where we are going:
Our county continues to be stable with regards to the pandemic. Thus, we are making the above plans, and we will be developing a Discipleship Plan for the Fall. If anything changes, we will do what we have to do. Fiscally, and with regards to attendance, we are in good shape. Thank you for your continued support, flexibility, and faithfulness.

Vacation Bible School Stories for Adults: Cain and Abel

[06/05/21]   This Sunday - Bring Your Sibling to Church!

Why? Because we are going to be hearing about Cain and Abel, the original siblings of scripture.

Though fought. A bit. What siblings don't?

[06/02/21]   Free Fish Fry, with the Donny Roberts Band playing the entire time.

September 12th, 6 to 8pm, Church Parking Lot.

Put it on your calendar. Bring a friend. Bring two friends. Bring their friends. Last time we did this, over 200 people were there, and we had leftovers. And leftover fish.... that is just a shame. Fried fish just doesnt reheat, and I hate to waste such good food.

The American Legion is doing the fish for us, which we greatly appreciate. They do a great job, and we are glad to support them.

Weekday Prayer - From Florida

[05/18/21]   The CDC has changed its guidance with regards to masks for people who are vaccinated, that those who are vaccinated can stop wearing masks except when required by a local business or when using mass transit.

We continue to have no active cases in this county, something I am very thankful for. It allows us to continue to take steps forward, such as the following.

We have said masks are not needed right now, but we do request that you wear a mask if you have been out of town. So if you go to St Louis, and go to the mall, please wear a mask the Sunday after.

This seems wise to me. If someone goes to a chiefs game, the mall, something like that, it would be wise to wear a mask at worship. Since we sing, and singing in an enclosed space is the highest risk activity for an airborne virus, please wear a mask the Sunday after visiting a mass gathering. Go to the outdoors zoo in St Louis, dont worry about it. Go to a Cardinals game, surrounded by people, maybe a mask is in order.

We continue to do what we can to stay safe, which is challenging in a changing situation. This is where we are at right now - I hope this continues to be the trend.
