Advent Reflection 2021

Would you believe that 2021 is almost over? It's been another of the weirdest and most challenging years for our whole society.
But Christmas is almost here. Even in days like these, it always feels filled with promise.

In the spirit of that tradition, we would like to invite you to take some time for your soul; come and be a part of our annual Advent Reflection Group.

As always, there will be times of quiet, reflection, and prayer in a community of caring people on the journey with you.
Here are the details:

Where: This group will meet exclusively online.

When: Starts on Monday, November 22nd, 2021, and then for 4 Mondays after that.

Cost: This will be a donation only event.

Please do not let finances be an obstacle to attending - give what you can.
It goes without saying that if you’re able to give, we would really appreciate that.

Time: We aware that, because of the connectivity of the internet, we have folks on both coasts. In order to accommodate this, you will have a choice of 7pm PST or 7pm EST. Please make that selection when you register - register here:

Via Vetera Daily Prayer - His Great Name
7/23/2021

Hi everyone
Welcome to our time of prayer and reflection as we conclude our. focus on passages that speak of the greatness of God.

I hope that this week’s reflection has been a blessing to your soul.

Today’s passage alludes to God’s greatness but speaks more about His intent toward us.
God is known by several different names, each one tells us something about His nature and character as well as what that means for us.

In our reflection today, God stakes His name on His commitment to us. He is saying, in essence, you know who I am and I mean what I say.

Thank you, Lord, for Your faithfulness to us.
Peace to you as you pray.

Here is the passage for today’s reflection:

“For the Lord will not abandon His people
on account of His great name,
because the Lord has been pleased
to make you a people for Himself.

Via Vetera Daily Prayer - A Question for the Ages
7/22/2021

Hi everyone
Welcome to our time of prayer and reflection as we continue to focus on passages that speak of God’s greatness.

In today's passage, from my perspective at least, David asks a question for the ages.
How does your heart respond, I wonder?
I’m not sure what else to say...

Peace to you as you pray.

Here is the passage for today’s reflection:

When I look at the night sky
and see the work of your fingers—
the moon and the stars you set in place—
what are mere mortals
that you should think about them,
human beings
that you should care for them?

Via Vetera Daily Prayer - The Awesome Wisdom of God
7/21/2021

Hi everyone
Welcome to our time of prayer and reflection as we continue to focus on passages that speak of God’s greatness.

Today’s passage speaks to us of the futility of trying to fathom what God is doing or how He does anything.

Our humanness almost always looks for a cause or an explanation. For example, Job tries to get God to explain Himself. If you have read that book, you know how that turned out!

At other times, we try to predict what God will do. I am fascinated to listen to some teachers trying, with some certainty, to tell us how God “works.”

It is not possible to do any of these things and our attempts to do so only reveal our brokenness and the residue of Eden where our father and mother tried to be like God.

Today’s passage calls us to reflect on this. Let us open our hearts anew to the mystery of God and take another step towards trusting more completely.

Peace to you as you pray.

Here is the passage for today’s reflection:

“My thoughts
are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.
“And my ways are far beyond
anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens
are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher
than your ways
and my thoughts higher
than your thoughts.

Via Vetera Daily Prayer - The Everlasting God
7/20/2021

Hi everyone
Welcome to our time of prayer and reflection as we continue to focus on passages that speak of God’s greatness.

As I considered this today, I realized that I think of God in many ways: Father, protector, healer, etc. The common denominator is that this is a list of who I need and want God to be.

While it is true that God is all of those things, it is not often that I think of God simply as God, separate from my needs and wants.

In today’s passage we see God’s all-surpassing greatness and wisdom.

My hope is that as we reflect, our hearts will be encouraged and comforted that the One who loves us is mighty.

Peace to you as you pray.

Here is the passage for today’s reflection:
Have you never heard?
Have you never understood?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of all the earth.

He never grows weak or weary.
No one can measure the depths
of his understanding.

Via Vetera Daily Prayer - The Radiance of God’s Glory
7/19/2021

Hi everyone
Welcome to our time of prayer and reflection.

As I was preparing to share in church this Sunday, it occurred to me that often, when I come to God, I’m looking for something from Him. My needs are almost always up front.

It got me thinking about the greatness of God and to come to God for no other reason than He is great and faithful.

So, this week, I thought we could take some time to reflect on that - the greatness of God.

My hope is that it would lift up our heads and have us look to God for His own sake because He is worthy of our hearts and of our worship.

Peace to you as you pray.

Here is the passage for today’s reflection:

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory
and the exact representation of his being,
sustaining all things
by his powerful word.

Via Vetera Daily Prayer - O Holy Spirit, Pray for Us
7/16/2021

Hi everyone
Welcome to our time of prayer and reflection.

This whole week we have been looking at passages that speak to us about prayer.

I’ve tried to have us look at passages that are a little less familiar in the hopes that it would open our hearts in a different way as we shift our perspective.

We conclude our reflection with a passage that I think is the single most powerful and underestimated word on prayer in the whole New Testament.

In my many discussions on prayer with the faithful throughout the years, it is almost never referred to.

Let us today, as we reflect, open to the Holy Spirit and invite the Spirit to speak deep into our souls.

O Holy Spirit, speak into the depths of our hearts - we need you so much.

Peace to you as you pray.

Here is the passage for today’s reflection:

And the Holy Spirit
helps us in our weakness.
For example,
we don’t know what God
wants us to pray for.
But the Holy Spirit prays for us
with groanings that cannot be expressed
in words.

Via Vetera Daily Prayer - O Holy Spirit, Help Us
7/15/2021

Hi everyone
Welcome to our time of prayer and reflection as we continue our focus on passages that speak to us about prayer.

So far this week we have looked passages that are a little less familiar.
Today, however, we reflect on a passage that is well known but is often ignored.

Jesus has always called us beyond ourselves and, when He does, it is almost always something that speaks to the core of who we are as flawed human beings.

My prayer is that we would open our hearts to the Holy Spirit and that the Spirit would renew our hearts as we do our best to follow Jesus in all He asks of us.

Peace to you as you pray.

Here is the passage for today’s reflection:

But I say, love your enemies!
Pray for those who persecute you!

Hi everyone
Welcome to our prayer as we continue to focus on passages that speak about prayer :-)

As we have seen in the last couple of days, we are reflecting on passages that are a little less familiar.

My hope is simply to have us open to the word in a different way with regards to prayer.

Today's passage, however, is a little different yet again as it really speaks to the heart of prayer. Our brother, David, leads us in this reflection.

My prayer is that this will be a blessing to you.
Peace to you as you pray.

Here is the passage for today’s reflection:

May the words of my mouth
and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing to you,
O Lord,

Hi everyone
Welcome to our time of prayer and reflection today as we continue to focus on passages that speak about prayer.

As we saw in yesterday’s passage, I am trying to have us reflect on passages that speak about prayer in various ways.

In today’s passage, we reflect on an aspect of prayer that I know that I don’t always think about unless I’m praying The Lord’s Prayer :-)

My hope for us is that this simple passage may be a reminder that will help us grow in the practice of mercy.

Peace to you as you pray.

Here is the passage for today’s reflection:

But when you are praying,
first forgive anyone
you are holding a grudge against,
so that your Father in heaven
will forgive your sins, too.”
