Dozens of families of St. Patrick Parish in Larkspur surprised pastor Msgr. Michael Padazinski and Father Andrew Ginter, spiritual director at Marin Catholic High School, with a car parade April 29. The priests came out on the rectory balcony and were greeted with a long line of honking cars, some with children waving from sunroofs. The event was inspired by an international vocation ministry campaign, "Lift up our Priests," designed to support parish priests during the pandemic.

A group of 2020 jubilarians renewed their vows at the Consecrated Life Mass held Feb. 2 at St. Matthew Church in San Mateo. 31 priests and women religious mark jubilees of 25, 40, 50, 60, 70 and even 80 years this year. “What a completely different and sad this archdiocese would be without you,” Archbishop Cordileone said in his homily on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord.

St. Anne School 100th anniversary
Retired Santa Rosa Bishop Daniel Walsh led the blessing at a Jan. 6 prayer service marking the 100th anniversary of San Francisco's St. Anne School. More than 70,000 students have attended St. Anne since its founding in 1920, including Bishop Walsh.

Simbang Gabi Commissioning Mass
Nearly 1,000 worshippers participated in the 26th annual Simbang Gabi Commissioning Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral Dec. 10, heralding early-morning Advent novena Masses at parishes participating in the centuries-old Filipino pre-Christmas tradition. Parols, or traditional lanterns, mostly star-shaped to evoke the Star of Bethlehem, led processions into the service. The story includes a video link to the entire service. San Francisco’s annual St. Jude Pilgrimage on Oct. 26 began at 8 a.m. at Church of the Epiphany and ended here at St. Dominic Parish In San Francisco, home of the Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus, run by the Dominican Order. The moment the statue of St. Jude appears in the door of the church on the shoulders of the friars, the faithful burst into exuberant song as he is carried down the aisle to the altar.

Deacons, priests, bishops and four cardinals sang the Salve Regina as Cardinal William J. Levada’s casket leaves St. Mary’s Cathedral at the end of his funeral Mass Oct. 24.

After a morning Mass at the Fishermen’s and Seamen’s Chapel at Fisherman’s Wharf Oct. 5, nearly 200 members of the North Beach community boarded the Red and White fleet to toss flowers into the sea in honor of fishermen who lost their lives there. It was all part of the 84th La Madonna del Lume Celebration, a tradition brought to the U.S. from Porticello, Sicily.

Salesian Father Al Mengon leads the memorial wreath ceremony for fisherman lost at sea yesterday outside the Golden Gate Bridge. The traditional event followed the La Madonna Del Lume Mass at the Fishermen’s and Seamen’s Memorial Chapel at Fisherman’s Wharf. The Mass and blessing at sea were part of a daylong celebration of La Festa Della Madonna Del Lume established in 1935 at Saints Peter and Paul Church in North Beach by the families of Sicilian fisherman.

About 150 people from throughout the Bay Area attended “Pray for Hong Kong,” a prayer vigil for peace held last night at St. Anne of the Sunset Church in San Francisco. The archdiocese's Chinese Ministry and Office of Human Life & Dignity hosted the Aug. 26 event led by retired Santa Rosa Bishop Daniel Walsh with Father Peter Zhai, director of Chinese Ministry; Father Daniel Nascimento, St. Anne pastor; Deacon Simon Thsui of Chinatown's Old St. Mary's Cathedral; and retired San Francisco Auxiliary Bishop Ignatius Wang. Born in Shanghai, Philip and Catherine Chan of Castro Valley lived in Hong Kong before moving to the U.S. more than 30 years ago. They traveled to St. Anne of the Sunset in San Francisco last night, where they were among about 150 people who gathered for a special “Pray for Hong Kong" prayer service led by retired Santa Rosa Bishop Daniel F. Walsh.

St. Raphael School Principal Lydia Collins leads students of the K-8 school in an outdoors prayer of gratitude for the brand new ‘astroturf’ playground during today’s morning assembly. The artificial lawn was installed last week before classes began for the 2019-2020 school year.
