From Rev. Lee's weekly message: Though he was an 18th century scientist and nobleman, as the son of a Lutheran Bishop, Emanuel Swedenborg might have had a keen interest in religion and its meaning. But during this time of Enlightenment in Europe, belief in God could have been quite challenging. In Swedenborg’s case, the essential challenge might have been two-fold: his genuine disappointment in the practices and teachings of the Christian leadership of his time, and his deep understanding of the natural sciences. Interestingly, his vision of the New Church came to him at the end of a rather long and mystical theological journey.

Welcome back! The New Church is how the first Swedenborgians identified themselves and June 19th has been celebrated as the New Church Day since the 1800s. The name, the New Church, expresses the hope and vision of Emmanuel Swedenborg toward a truer Christianity that could embrace all religions and inspire people to practice spiritual humility and kindness. On Sunday, June 20th, Rev. Lee reflects on the meaning of the New Church and its faith.

From Rev. Lee's weekly message: Reflecting on my memories with my father, I feel like I hear his unspoken words and sense the unexpressed pain in his heart. And, this reminds me of Psalm 103, “As a father has compassion for his children …” The English word compassion means “sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others.” But I feel more connected to the meaning of its origin: the Latin word 'compati' means “to suffer with.” ...

From Rev. Lee's weekly message: "Starting something new in the place where you are a stranger is an incredibly challenging task. I know this first hand because I am a first-generation immigrant who came to the USA at the age of 23. I came with complete uncertainty of the future and how life that might unfold ahead of me. Looking back, I am amazed that I had the courage to embark on such a journey in a foreign country with an unfamiliar language. Therefore, whenever I read Joshua chapter 1, I cannot help but to be deeply sympathetic. Joshua is about to embark on a journey into the land of Canaan leading all of the Israelites to fulfill a God-promised mission."

One of the most common topics of conversation these days seems to be spirituality. In my observation, people quite often use the term “spirituality” when referring to the wellbeing of their body and mind. However, the essence of the message of Jesus Christ is the wellbeing of the spirit, which is related to the body and mind, yet different. This Sunday, June 6th, Rev. Lee will reflect and explore the meaning and implication of “spirituality” in accordance with the Bible and Swedenborgian theology.

This never-ending question for all humans does not usually stem from uncertainty about life or a lack of desires and passions, but rather from the innate and internal thirst to know and acknowledge the purpose of one’s life.

Is God real? Believing in something or someone other than oneself is challenging for humans. Simply accepting reality and having certainty of what exists outside of oneself requires a degree of mental work and processing. Many confess to believe in God, yet when faced with this simple question, many are left puzzled. On this Sunday, as part of a special sermon series examining the big questions of our faith, Rev. Junchol Lee will reflect on this simple yet deeply spiritual matter.

From Rev. Lee's weekly message: "I have since had a series of scientifically unexplainable experiences in the form of dreams, visions, and even feelings. I tried to understand them through many methods such as Asian dream interpretations and modern dream analysis by Freud, Jung, and others. After studying Swedenborg and his correspondences, I felt a deeper degree of inner assurance in both the meaning and purpose of my own experiences; they were leading me to one simple truth: God is real."

Forgiveness is emphasized by all religious traditions in the world. In the Bible, the first figure to show us what it means to forgive someone is Joseph. Joseph shows the power of forgiveness by forgiving his brothers who first wanted to kill him, then later sold him as a slave. On this Sunday, Rev. Junchol Lee will reflect on both the meaning of forgiveness and its realistic implications in our lives.

General information

General Information: [email protected] Weddings & other events: [email protected] Services: 11:00 am, Sundays Coffee hour: 12:00 pm, Sundays Sunday School and Child Care Available The San Francisco Swedenborgian Church exists to support each individual on his or her own, unique spiritual journey In worship we approach God through the divine Incarnation in Jesus Christ. However, we have several beliefs that make us unique: • God does not punish us with Hell or reward us with Heaven. Instead, after the death of our physical bodies, we naturally gravitate to spiritual communities that share our fundamental loves – loves that we developed through our intentions and actions during our life on earth. People whose fundamental nature consists of compassion and charity find their joy and delights in heavenly communities, while those driven by selfish and materialistic loves can only be comfortable in hellish communities. This is a consequence of God’s infinite love for all creation. • All people of who lived a life of goodness enter heaven, regardless of their religion. This follows logically from the previous point. Likewise, God does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender identity or sexual preference. • True faith is always accompanied by questions and doubts. One should not believe something because one is told to do so, no matter how authoritative the source. We each have a responsibility to question, meditate, reason and draw our own conclusions. It is only through this process that beliefs become our own. • We are to be of use in the world Each of us is gifted with and develops talents that should be put to use in this world. If we deploy those talents with the intent to delight in the happiness we create in others, we develop over time a compassionate soul and help create a “heaven on earth”. • There are no harps in Heaven OK, that’s not strictly true. There are probably angels that love harps. The point is Heaven is an exciting, dynamic place where people practice all their loves and contribute to heavenly society without the constraints of time and space. --------------------------------------------- "The building itself is a lesson — it teaches truth and honesty, this little tiled brick church at the corner of Lyon and Washington streets... " Over one hundred years after those words were written by a newspaper reporter, the Swedenborgian Church still stands — flourishes, rather — in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco, California. Its creation in 1895 was influenced by an elite group of early California pioneers: the painter William Keith, naturalist John Muir, architect A. Page Brown, draftsman Bernard Maybeck, and most particularly by the Reverend Joseph Worcester, who would be its first minister. The spirit of the church arose from an appreciation of the beauty of nature, and a will to express that beauty as divinity itself. "The Swedenborgian Church is a San Francisco gem of exquisite beauty and spirituality. This 100-year old church radiates friendship and community and has been a haven to countless San Franciscans." - Nancy Pelosi announcing that the Swedenborgian Church of San Francisco has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
