"Lessons from the Bhagavad Gita": Yoga Philosophy and Psychology with Swami Asokananda happening this Saturday, Oct 30, 11am-12:30pm ONLINE.

We do not see the world as it is. Each of us sees a different version of the world due to the different conditioning of the mind. All these separate versions of reality create conflict. The Gita provides us with the tools to see clearly and live in harmony.

Mahatma Gandhi: “When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to the Bhagavad Gita and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new meaning from it every day.”

Swami Asokananda, a monk since 1973, is one of Integral Yoga’s foremost teachers, known for his warmth, intelligence, and good humor. His teaching comes out of his own practice and experience, since he has absorbed the wisdom of his guru, Sri Swami Satchidananda, since the age of 19. While he enjoys sharing the practical wisdom of the Yogic philosophy (especially that of the great Indian scripture the Bhagavad Gita), he also loves his practice of Hatha Yoga and is one of our primary instructors for Intermediate and Advanced Hatha Yoga Teacher Training. In the past, he has served as the president of Satchidananda Ashram–Yogaville® and Integral Yoga® International; he is currently the President of the New York Integral Yoga Institute.

"When we practice forgiveness individually, we start by recognizing that we have all betrayed and hurt others, just as we have knowingly or unknowingly been harmed by them. It is inevitable in this human realm.
"Sometimes our betrayals are small, sometimes terrible. Extending and receiving forgiveness is essential for redemption from our past. To forgive does not mean we condone the misdeeds of another. We can dedicate ourselves to make sure they never happen again. But without forgiveness the world can never be released from the sorrows of the past. Someone quipped, 'Forgiveness means giving up all hope for a better past.' Forgiveness is a way to move on."

Join Swami Ramananda tomorrow night, Sat. October 23 @ 5:00 pm PDT for Satsang, a special time for us to come together as a community – online & in-person!
By donation $0, $5, $10, $15, sliding scale, pay what you can.

Swami Ramanandaji will share how the teachings of Yoga can help us understand the ego as a self-image we have formed, that distorts our experiences and ultimately causes us to suffer.

In Sanskrit, Sat means truth and Sangha means community. Satsang offers an opportunity to come together to share spiritual teachings. The philosophy of Integral Yoga is explored, often, through an informal discussion. "Forgiveness is most healing, most profound, when it grows out of humility and realism, a hard-won sense that, whether you are entirely to blame in these events and I am blameless, there is in each of us insufficiencies and imperfections that can be our greatest teachers."

Chant the Gayatri Mantra with Madhavi tonight!
Wednesday, October 20, 8pm-8:30pm.
Please register in advance, a Zoom link and passcode will be provided via confirmation email: https://bit.ly/3lWKHt5

We gather each month to chant the Gayatri Mantra, the great mantra of Light and Liberation, to maximize the spiritual benefits of the full moon.

“oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ
tat savitur vareṇyaṃ
bhargo devasya dhīmahi
dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt”
– Rigveda 3.62.10[11]

Madhavi Maria Monserrat Becht, RYT-500 began practicing yoga and fell deeply in love with it in 2014 while living in Princeton NJ. She had a Tibetan meditation practice, but something was missing and since then yoga has been her life. Madhavi has a passion for cooking healthy meals, working with healing plants, cacao ceremonies, hiking and being in nature. She moved to IYI San Francisco in 2018 where she decided to go deeper into her practice and live in community. She feels like Integral Yoga is her home. While living in the ashram she has deepened her meditation practice, completed two 200 hour basic training, yin and yoga nidra. Madhavi’s goal is to help others to live more peacefully and in harmony with nature.

“You begin with ambition of some kind. Then, at a certain stage, meditation becomes instinctive. Then you cannot not meditate – it happens to you.”-Chogyam Trumpa Rinpoche

This ongoing group meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month to explore and refine aspects of our meditation practices – how we sit, why we sit, and how that relates to our lives. The format consists of a group meditation with some direction, a talk on a related subject and a question/answer session with sharing.

Prajna took her first yoga class in 1970 in southern California. Later that year she came through the doors of the Berkeley Integral Yoga Institute (IYI), and since that time she has loved IYI.
Over the years she has maintained an active involvement in movement, healing, and meditation. She has practiced yoga, tai chi, and various dance forms; co-authored two best selling books on Holistic Health; lived and danced flamenco in southern Spain; and since 2000, has taught Rosen Movement. In 2010, she completed her IYI Teacher Training at
Yogaville, VA and began teaching yoga. She brings to her teaching four decades of meditation practice, the last twenty eight in the Buddhist tradition.
Attuning to the wisdom of the body/mind and opening to the present are the foundations of both Prajna’s teaching and personal practice. Prajna has cooked professionally for many years at retreats centers, cafes and restaurants.

General information

The San Francisco Integral Yoga Institute, founded by Swami Satchidananda offers public Yoga instruction, meditation, Yoga teacher training, and a residency program. Since opening in 1970, the Institute has been serving the Bay Area from its location in San Francisco's Mission District at 770 Dolores Street. Integral Yoga Known for its clarity, directness, and spiritual focus, Integral Yoga offers a traditional and balanced approach to the ancient teachings of Yoga. The Institute offers daily drop-in Hatha Yoga classes (with asana, pranayama and meditation) ranging from gentle to advanced, and longer free group meditations. We also offer Courses, Workshops and Special Events focusing on many specific aspects of Yoga - including stress-reduction, philosophy, health, and spiritual growth. Service The Integral Yoga Institute exists because of giving. The service of our teachers – who donate their time and energy – help to create a special atmosphere of love and dedication. Teacher Training Program Our Teacher Training program has been training teachers and changing lives for over twenty-five years. In fact, Integral Yoga was a founding member of the Yoga Alliance (the national organization of Yoga teachers), and our Hatha 1 Teacher Training program easily fulfills the requirements for certification at the Yoga Alliance 200-hour level. This program and the accompanying Integral Yoga Teacher's Manual have been used successfully by thousands of teachers around the world. In San Francisco, we are lucky to have a gifted and experienced staff that has taught this training for years. We also offer advanced training for yoga teachers to deepen their understanding of Yoga and their teaching skills. The hours from these advanced trainings can be used toward registration with Yoga Alliance as an advanced teacher at the 500-hour level. In fact, the San Francisco Integral Yoga Institute now has approval from Yoga Alliance to certify teachers at this advanced level. We look forward to serving you. Om Shanthi.
