St. Francis Lutheran Church...A Place for Gathering...
I came across some photos from happy times together. St. Francis is definitely a wonderful place to come together to worship, celebrate and enjoy each other's company!
This Saturday, August 15 from 12:30-4:30pm the LGBTQ community and their allies are invited to attend this year’s virtual OurTownSF Nonprofit Expo! The Expo is an exciting, annual resource fair that brings together members of the Bay Area LGBTQ+ community and Bay Area organizations that serve the LGBTQ+ community, providing an opportunity for these organizations to attract new clients, volunteers, board members, and donors. https://www.facebook.com/events/2201298380166099/
How can I write a sonnet about your Easter bonnet if you don't wear one, this Sunday? I'll don my gay apparel for church service, give you all some color to look at on Zoom. Please find a bonnet or hat, or make one, to show off on Easter. You'll look fabulous, darling.
On our way to Christ the Good Shepard Lutheran Church to hear Pastor Duncan.

Next visit to Brooklyn, N.Y. I will definitely attend his Jehu's Table, where he serves as a mission developer.

Dear St. Francis Lutheran Church, My grandfather Peter Christian Hansen was the first Pastor of St. Francis. It was then Anscar Lutheran. My daughters will be visiting San Francisco the last week of June. I was there a few years ago at the Anniversary. I gave a few pictures of my grandfather and they were in a display case. Would you please let me know when your Church is open to visit as they would like to visit your church. Peace and love, Barbara Hansen Cantwell

Thank you (from New York) for streaming the beautiful Tenebrae service tonight.
Thinking about Susan Kools, who has temporarily taken a job in Charlottesville, VA. She tends to be such an activist. Hope she stays safe.

[06/17/21]   Dear Friends,

Are you ready for a new beginning? We are about to tip-toe into a new adventure: a shift to hybrid worship services!

Beginning this Friday, June 18, 2021 at 10 AM, we are introducing a new, temporary, hybrid service - you may attend in person or online.

This will give us a chance to figure out how to get it right. Throughout this time, the Sunday Services will continue in the same Zoom-based format as they are now. Council and Worship Committee will guide us on the next steps which will be the introduction of Hybrid Sunday Morning Services (in-person and online) sometime in mid-July.

In person: We gather in the beautiful sanctuary at 152 Church Street in San Francisco. Please wear a face mask. There are no other restrictions or requirements.

Online: You may join the worship service from the comfort and safety of your home or from any place where you have access to the internet.

A livestream video will appear 10 minutes prior the start time on our YouTube Channel

What to expect when you come to the in-person service this Friday:
San Francisco Health Department has lifted almost all the previous restrictions. However, we ask that all worshipers wear face coverings until further notice. We will gather for a traditional liturgical worship service, but we will refrain from singing and we will not share Holy Communion.

What to expect when you view the livestream video this Friday:
Several cameras will be set up so you will have an overview of the beautiful St. Francis sanctuary as well as close-ups of the worship leaders. You may use the comment/chat feature of YouTube to share announcements and prayer-requests. An order of the service will be available on Friday morning for download.

How you can help:
For in-person worship: We are looking for worship leaders such as ushers, lectors, and assisting ministers.
For livestreaming: We are looking for people to provide feedback.

What to expect going forward:
The Hybrid Friday Services will continue for about four weeks.

We are so happy and excited about these next steps! It will be wonderful to see some of you in person again and to discover yet another way in which technology helps us to connect and worship together. In the meantime, let us continue to pray for each other and look for ways to support each other with patience, grace, and creativity at this time of new beginnings!

With glad and joyful hearts we congratulate the newly elected Bishop of the Sierra Pacific Synod - ELCA, Rev. Dr. Megan Rohrer!

We celebrate too, the extraordinarily-ordained Rev. Jeff R. Johnson who was the second candidate on the final ballot for bishop.

Megan was ordained through the Extraordinary Candidacy Project, a precursor organization to Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries, in 2006. Since their ordination fifteen years ago, Megan’s ministry has predominantly focused on God’s beloveds on the margins. From their time directing The Welcome Ministry, which ministered to the homeless and houseless - particularly LGBTQIA+ homeless youth, to today as both Pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in San Francisco and the Community Chaplain Coordinator to the SFPD, Megan has always found themself walking alongside in solidarity with, and to provide safety for, those lifting their voices for justice.

Today, Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries celebrates the called and faithful servant, Bishop-elect Rohrer (they/he), the first trans Bishop in the ELCA. Today, history was made in our church!

ELM celebrates a church that now recognizes the gifts of queer leaders like Bishop-elect Rohrer and we anticipate the day when all queer ministry leaders will be called to ministry settings without hindrance or barrier and will be affirmed in their God-given calls.

Congratulations, again, Bishop-elect Rohrer!

We are still here and we are still the church! Lots of ministry is happening every day, even though it looks a bit different these days. The St. Francis community continues to support people near and far: anyone who is hungry can knock at the church door and receive food. On Sunday mornings we hand out freshly prepared bagged meals while observing an abundance of safety measures. We provide pastoral care through phone calls, we hold interactive worship services using a zoom platform, we gather online for Bible Study, we host informational events in support of people's emotional and spiritual health, we hold regular online planning meetings to discern how we can best be God's people in the world, and we support a wide variety of ministries and causes through grants from the St. Francis endowment. http://sflcsf.org/

General information

St. Francis Lutheran church celebrates the extensive Christian tradition while nurturing each person’s spiritual journey to wholeness and peace. We believe human diversity in religion, culture, race and sexuality are gifts of God’s good creation to be celebrated and affirmed. We believe that there is truly Good News for the Church and for the world in following Jesus Christ. We see our faith community as one of many religious and secular faith communities. We respect and are open to the views and ways of other communities who also use the word “God” in their life and language. We honor and bless consensual human relationships and we work for a just society and church. We are a biblical community, not a Bible community. We view the Bible as the starting point to learn the great stories of Jewish, Muslim and Christian faith, but we seek the present guidance of the Spirit of God in the midst of the community to apply these stories to our lives. The people of St. Francis have a vision to be a beacon of light for justice and equality for all sexual minority persons and to be a vital congregation for all in the local community. We invite you to share that vision with us.
