ON THIS DAY 100 years ago, a banquet was held at the Fairmont Hotel, celebrating the decision to establish the Cathedral. Two days later, on May 19, a group of San Francisco Greeks, ostensibly the first Parish Council, met to discuss a path forward. The former Archbishop of Athens, Meletios Metaxakis, presided over the meeting and noted how, at the Fairmont Hotel (in the Gold Room, specifically) two days earlier, “a decision was made to establish the cathedral church…” The next day, May 20, the Council met again, with Metaxakis presiding, and decided to purchase property at Hayes and Pearce Streets and to erect the cathedral there, along with a school, diocesan offices, and an orphanage. The rest is history. In 1928, the community voted to relocate to its present location on Valencia Street. And the Cathedral’s 100 year old story continues from there. But, it all began on May 17, 1921. It began with a vision and with a decision. The vision continues as we take up phase two of our current building project. This phase aims at completing the interior, with walls, furnishings, and iconography, and to consecrating the new cathedral on March 25, 2023. A beacon of our Faith and culture in the heart of San Francisco, for the next 100 years and beyond! Happy birthday, Annunciation Cathedral!

Last Thursday we celebrated our Feast Day. Here decorated beautifully by our own Anastasia Dekaristos is the Icon of the Annunciation. The color blue is often attributed to the Theotokos and on March 25th blue and white of course are also representative of the colors of Greece.

Special thanks to our Kostas Petrakos for capturing this photo on our Feast Day.

A prayer during times of distress - “Lord You know our suffering, and we flee to You, our only hope and refuge, for relief and comfort; trusting in Your infinite love and compassion, that in due time when You know best, You will deliver us from this trouble, and turn our distress into comfort, when we shall rejoice in Your mercy, and exalt and praise Your Holy Name, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.”

Today we mourn the conversion of our mother church, Hagia Sophia, into a mosque. The original name of our Cathedral in San Francisco was also Hagia Sophia as established in 1921. Although this is a sad day in history, let us pray for all Orthodox Christians and in spiritual unity may our Faith be strengthened🙏🏼

The Annunciation Cathedral stands with Archbishop Elpidophoros - “I came here to Brooklyn today in order to stand in solidarity with my fellow sisters and brothers whose rights have been sorely abused. This was a peaceful protest, one without violence of any kind, and I thank all of those involved, because violence begets only more violence. We must speak and speak loudly against the injustice in our country. It is our moral duty and obligation to uphold the sanctity of every human being. We are facing a pandemic of grave physical illness, but the spiritual illness in our lands runs even deeper and must be healed by actions as well as words. And so, I will continue to stand in the breach together with all those who are committed to preserving peace, justice, and equality for every citizen of goodwill, regardless of the race, religion, gender or ethnic origin.”
