SGI-USA is part of the larger SGI network, which comprises more than 12 million people in 192 countries and territories around the world. SGI members base their practice on the Lotus Sutra and Nichiren Buddhism, which teaches that each person has within the courage, wisdom and compassion to face and surmount any of life’s challenges. Based on core Buddhist principles such as respecting the dignity of human life and the interconnectedness of self and the environment, SGI engages in various peace activities, including human rights education, the movement to abolish nuclear weapons and efforts to promote sustainable development.

SGI-USA Statement in Response to Shootings in Orlando

On behalf of our Soka Gakkai International-USA (SGI-USA) Buddhist community, we offer both our deep prayers and our resolve for action in response to the senseless murder of 49 precious human beings as well as those wounded in Orlando, Florida yesterday. We stand in heartfelt solidarity with the families and loved ones of those who were killed, with the residents of Orlando and with the people of the global LGBTQ community.

We are saddened beyond words by this tragic loss of life. As President Obama noted, it was an act arising from hatred, and as Buddhists we believe that the fundamental antidote for the stream of hatred which distorts our society, is to build an even deeper stream of compassion that affirms our bonds as brothers and sisters and challenges those ideologies which would divide us into “us” against “them”.

Finally, we reflect on the shocking fact that a single heavily armed person was able to inflict this much damage and suffering on so many. We therefore call on our elected leaders to put the safety and well-being of our communities first, and to reach across the borders of party and ideology to enact common-sense, humanitarian limits on the availability of those weapons whose only purpose is to kill other human beings.

Adin Strauss
SGI-USA General Director

The Establishment of Nichiren Buddhism

April 28 marks the anniversary of the establishment of Nichiren Buddhism, the form of Buddhism practiced by the members of the SGI. By declaring that the practice of the Lotus Sutra would enable people to manifest the Buddha nature in this lifetime, Nichiren was challenging the fundamental mindset of the time; that ordinary people were powerless to affect change. Transmission of his teachings and the fulfillment of his vision of peace founded on respect for the sanctity of life has been the guiding inspiration for the first three Soka Gakkai presidents and is the central pillar of SGI members' activities worldwide. April 28 marks the anniversary of the establishment of Nichiren Buddhism on April 28, 1253. The Japanese monk Nichiren first invoked the chant

Round 2 for Ikeda Wisdom Academy!

40th Anniversary of establishment of SGI!

Soka Gakkai International (SGI) was founded on January 26, 1975, at a peace conference that brought together Soka Gakkai members from 51 countries and territories, held on the island of Guam, site of some of the fiercest fighting of World War II. Ikeda became the first president of SGI. In 1995, SGI adopted the SGI Charter and confirmed the movement's primary objective of contributing to global peace.

The SGI under Ikeda’s leadership has become one of the largest and most diverse Buddhist movements in the world, fostering grassroots activities promoting nuclear abolition, sustainability, human rights education and cultural exchange. To help build solidarity for peace, Ikeda has also founded a number of institutions in the fields of culture and the arts, peace research and education. 01/19/2015

General information

Nichiren Buddhism embraces two paramount beliefs: The SGI bases itself directly on the teachings of Nichiren as set forth in his writings and demonstrated in practice by the Soka Gakkai’s founding presidents. SGI members in 192 countries and territories have consistently shown the power of the practice of Nichiren Buddhism to transform their lives for the better and in contributing to their communities. (from An Introduction to Buddhism, p. 103) SGI does not have priests and temples, but rather lay leaders and community centers. Daily practice is carried out at home and discussion meetings are usually held in people’s homes. SGI members live and work in society and integrate their practice into the daily routine of their lives.
