[06/23/17]   Dear CCU Softball team leaders and participants,

It is nearly end of June and something seems to be missing. For the first time as far back as I can remember (I think I started participating in CCU Softball back in the summer of 1991), there is no CCU Softball. On behalf of the other 8 members of the CCU Softball committee (John Tam, Jessica Sue, Stephen Kwong, Jason Quintal, Peony Cheung, Matt Chin, Wesley Wong and Gary Seto), I wanted to explain the hiatus.

One of the primary reasons CCU Softball is currently on hiatus is the lack of a softball commissioner who provides the spiritual direction for the ministry. Stepping down as the commissioner following the end of the 2016 season was not something that brought me joy, as I have thoroughly enjoyed serving in that capacity and have greatly enjoyed working with my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ from other churches in the committee. The reason I felt I had to step down was because I believe the job of the commissioner required someone who is fully devoted to growing the ministry spiritually. For the past few years, I have been called by God to redirect my time and energies to another direction. I started attending Western Seminary in Santa Clara/Milpitas on a part time basis in the fall of 2014 (this was on top of working a forty hour day job, running an internet business and being a husband and father to three young children). That was why some of you stopped seeing me out on the field.

Before finally answering God’s whispers to take steps towards full time ministry, I had full intention to playing softball at least until I was 50. I had started playing baseball in sixth grade and had played the game with regularity as I enjoyed the game immensely. Then, God gave me this new thing to pursue…and in the pursuit of knowing Him and his Word, something else had to give…which was my passion for sports and time to participate and serve in CCU Softball. After starting seminary, I continued serving for two years as the commissioner but could not devote my full heart and time focus as before. I felt like I was cheating the ministry as CCU Softball truly deserves someone that had the time, as well as the heart to serve God, to be the commissioner.

Some people may not realize the time commitment needed to serve in CCU Softball and CCU Sports. Running the league is not simply about renting the fields, getting the insurance coverage required, and making up the schedule so that the games can be played. As this is a league that is about bringing glory to God and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world, there is a high spiritual aspect that is unlike any other sports leagues. In addition to ministries in one’s home church, a commissioner (as well as all the committee members) called to serve in this parachurch ministry is doing double duty in one sense, a very high level of time commitment. In case you did not know, the committee members are NOT paid in any way for their time. They serve in the committee as a means to serve God and His people. Other sports leagues pay organizers for their time to organize the leagues. The struggle with time commitment was not limited to myself either. Over the past few years, our Softball committee has experienced quite a few life changes. John, Stephen and Jason are all fathers to multiple young children in their families. Matt and Peony went through major life changes as they got married last year (not to each other by the way lol!). When we started having committee members that are no longer able to be out on the field themselves (which became the case for myself, John and Stephen), to be with the people, it was perhaps a time for the league to take a step back and ask God for new direction for the future. That is why, for this year at least, CCU Softball is on hiatus as the league awaits new leadership who can move the ministry forward once again.

On that note, I would like to thank the aforementioned committee members who have served with me over the past years. I have enjoyed spending time with you all talking, planning and executing the various things needed in order for a summer season (and even a fall season one year) to happen. I hope that I have been able to bring you to knowing God deeper in your own walks with Christ. To the various leaders and participants that I have been blessed to know in the past years, I thank God for your as well. May you all continue to grow in your knowledge of God (not just head knowledge, but in your heart as well). May God continue to bless this ministry through the provision of a new leader in the near future so that softball may once again become a ministry tool in His and your church!

Dom (Cumberland Church in Daly City)

former CCU Softball commissioner

P.S. – if you so feel called by God to apply for the commissioner position and feel you are mature spiritually in Christ, have a servant heart for God and have past sports experiences (not necessarily softball), feel free to contact me on the CCU Softball page and I will be sure to point you in the right direction!

[07/27/15]   CCU Softball is looking for "vintage" pictures of CCU Softball from the early 90s (unless CCU Softball existed prior to that...does anyone know for sure?). Anyone got some pics and willing to scan/take pics of the pics and email? CCU of San Francisco is celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 2016 and a booklet is being produced in conjunction with that. So we need your vintage photos by the end of the month please...thanks for any contributions!
