Today is the feast of St. John the Forerunner (Baptist). One of St. John's greatest virtues is humility. He understood his role in the story of salvation, which was to prepare the way for another greater than he, Jesus Christ. In doing so he was glorified, but not because he sought glory. Today, ask yourself how you can prepare the way for others to discover Jesus Christ. Also ask yourself how you can find fulfillment through humility, by supporting the mission of others.

In the words of the hymn proper for the day, "Highest among the prophets, and greatest among those born of women, through the Spirit you perceived in the womb the economy of the Son of God. Supplicate God for the children of the church."

In the late 1910s, there were only a few Armenians living in San Francisco.

Through the efforts of the late Mihran Serailian arrangements were made for Bishop Papken Guleserian to celebrate Divine Liturgy at Grace Cathedral. In time this was followed by a visit from the Primate of America, Bishop Dirayr Der Hovhannessian, and Very Rev. Fr. Vartan Dz. V. Kasparian of Holy Trinity Church of Fresno.

In 1924 a Parish Council was appointed to lead St. Nersess Shnorhali Parish, as it was known at that time. Sunday services in the 1920's were held in the Trinity Greek Church on 7th Street, as well as in two Episcopal Churches. Having no permanent priest, the parish's spiritual needs were met by Fr. Guldalian of Yettem and Fr. Kasparian of Fresno.
Following the term of Fr. Khatchig Krouzian, Rev. Fr. Bedros Hagopian served at St. John, succeeded by Rev. Zgon Dz. V. Hagopian. In 1941 a Lutheran Church was purchased; Fr. Levont Parounak, the then pastor, designed and built a new altar.
