Beautiful "virtual" Advent calendar - art and interesting facts from the British National Trust, shared by the virtual DickensFair.com https://dickensfair.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4d53095e9ef73c4914b0be2c6&id=71decc4b17&e=776fc635d8 It says 2019 below - but it is a 2020 update.
November – Beginnings and Endings

In worship during November, we experience in our scripture, music, and preaching themes which focus on the end – the end of the church year, the end times, and the end of our earthly lives. But for listeners who see with eyes of faith, these themes also provide solid ground for hope. We heard the apostle Paul in last Sunday’s reading speak clearly of hope: “We do not want you to be uninformed . . . about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope”. (1 Thess. 4:13) November is a time to honor grief and proclaim hope.

Where God is, there is hope. While facing uncertainties and distress we can hope because God is here – with us. Paul invites us to “encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing”. (1 Thess 5:11) Our nation will be rebuilding with a new administration. Our communities will need to rebuild once the threat of COVID has waned. Schools and business, community groups and senior centers will eventually reopen, rebuild, and refocus their energies and efforts in the months ahead.

There are endings ahead of us and there are beginnings. Where God is, there is hope.
For this, we can give thanks.
With gratitude, Pr. Elizabeth

I've been enjoying this live organ hymn fest this morning. See you at church soon!
Just remembering that we need to add strawberries and bubbles to the pickup order grocery list to have in time for the traditional festive Easter coffee hour/vigil reception... from home! ;-)
If you guys have time google "Kathleen Omeara's" poem from 1869. It says:

'And People Stayed Home,'
written in 1869.
And people stayed home
and read books and listened
and rested and exercised
and made art and played
and learned new ways of being
and stopped
and listened deeper
someone meditated
someone prayed
someone danced
someone met their shadow
and people began to think differently
and people healed
and in the absence of people who lived in ignorant ways,
dangerous, meaningless and heartless,
even the earth began to heal
and when the danger ended
and people found each other
grieved for the dead people
and they made new choices
and dreamed of new visions
and created new ways of life
and healed the earth completely
just as they were healed themselves.
We projected the service onto the tv last Sunday. Our cat watched on the small screen 😊

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18.

Sunday School is back!

We are so happy to be together in person again. In our first meeting we heard the Creation story, we talked about how God gave us this beautiful earth to enjoy and care for, we made chalk drawings of our favorite gifts from God, and we played some games that involved a lot of running around.

We will be back out on the square (almost) every Sunday after the 9:00 service ends. Sunday School will last about 30 minutes. All kids between preschool to 5th grade are welcome. Confirmation age kids are welcome to join as TAs. Parents can drop off, or stay and watch, or join in.

A Spare the Air Alert has been issued for today, 8/19 and tomorrow, 8/20. Smoke from numerous wildfires is currently impacting air quality in the Bay Area. Wood burning is banned.

High levels of particulate matter pollution are harmful to breathe, especially for young children, seniors and those with respiratory and heart conditions. If you smell smoke, avoid exposure by staying indoors, if heat is not an issue. If temperatures are too hot indoors, visit an air-cooling center or other facility with filtered air. More at sparetheair.org.

We now have dahlias blooming in the garden and plan to create a dahlia dell at the far end of the garden next year. A special thanks to Kris Iversen for all your hard work in St. Mark's garden.

Congratulations, Cora!

Deacon Cora Rose was called by the Oregon Synod to a unique ministry — Poverty Alleviation and Faith Formation. Within this call, Cora continues her work as a legal aid attorney in addition to faith formation work to strengthen local congregations in their public witness for peace and justice.

Cora was ordained in July and called to the Word and Service Roster. She is in candidacy toward reception into the Deaconess Community of the ELCA.

Deaconesses serve as chaplains, pastoral associates, spiritual directors, nurses, missionaries, teachers, environmentalists, social workers, and now as legal aid attorneys — wherever people’s needs call for loving service and advocacy. If you would like to learn more about the Deaconess Community, please feel free to email us at [email protected] or call 773-380-1705. We will be delighted to hear from you!

Join St. Mark's in welcoming Pr. Lyle J Beckman as our new interim pastor!

The Congregational Council for St. Mark’s met on Tuesday, July 13th, to consider the recommendation from the Sierra Pacific Synod that Pastor Lyle Beckman serve as our Intentional Interim.

Pr. Lyle was present to introduce himself, describe his past calls and the spiritual journey that led him to serve God as a pastor in the Lutheran church. The Council voted to accept the Synod’s recommendation that Pr. Lyle serve as our intentional interim pastor, leading St. Mark’s through the self-evaluation that precedes the call process, and through the call process itself. Council also approved a contract for the terms and conditions for Pr. Lyle’s time serving St. Mark’s.

Pastor Lyle began at St. Mark’s on August 8th and now has time with Pr. Elizabeth Ekdale for sharing, knowledge transfer, and introductions to the community. Council members are excited to work with someone with his depth of experience serving urban parishes and ministering to people who are hurting.
