Meditation in Everyday Life: A Five-Week Course
Five Tuesday Evenings January 12th—February 9th
From 6:30 to 8:30 PM

With simple instructions and support, mindfulness meditation practice can become part of your life, bringing greater stability, strength, and clarity.

While meditation has many benefits, establishing a consistent personal practice can be extremely challenging for both new and experienced meditators alike.

This five-week Mindfulness Meditation program is designed to help new meditators develop a regular practice and bring the benefits of mindfulness meditation to their daily lives. As we begin to practice on a regular basis, we learn to relax and simply be with whatever is going on in our lives. Over time, this meditation helps us to cultivate courage, humor, and stability in the face of daily complexities of jobs, relationships, and all aspects of daily life. LINK IN BIO.

We often talk about the importance of being in the moment both in meditation and in post-meditation, or in our daily life. But when doing so, what do we really mean by being in the moment, or being, or even, the moment?

Further, why would that be helpful or important? Why would it be helpful to spend some daily time on cultivating momentariness in meditation, considering that there are seemingly so many other important things to do and to take care of?

In his talk, Lodrö Sangpo will discuss why, in general, momentariness is one of the fundamental principles of Buddhist meditation and philosophy and outlook on life. He will do this by specifically focusing on Trungpa Rinpoche's original meditation instruction on shamatha-vipashyana (or mindfulness-awareness) which forms a solid basis for all the so-called later practices.

White Fragility Book Study Class | 8 Thursday evenings July 9th through August 27th from 7 to 8:30 PM Pacific time.

A book study class on Robin DiAngelo's book White Fragility. This book provides a direct and clear examination of the system of white supremacy, how it operates and how it hurts us, individually and collectively. It describes how we participate unknowingly in perpetuating it. With directness and compassion, DiAngelo allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to ‘bad people'.

Within the view of basic goodness, we will share our vulnerability and open up to what makes it difficult to talk about racism. This book will explore the path for white people who truly endeavor to be a part of the solution.

This 8-week class will be held online on the Zoom platform. Class will be limited to 15 participants, so please pre-register well in advance to reserve your space. We ask for a commitment for all eight weeks.

Self-deception seems always to depend upon the dream world, because you would like to see what you have not yet seen, rather than what you are now seeing. Self-deception manifests in trying to create or recreate a dream world, the nostalgia of the dream experience. The opposite of self-deception is just working with the facts of life.

Timeline Photos

For the bodhisattva, the practitioner who puts others before him or herself, working with others is a natural process, an absolutely spontaneous process. You are working along with situations as things happen. You don’t force things because you want to achieve something. It is like the natural growth of plants, If there’s enough rain and sunshine, the plants will grow; if there isn’t, the plants won’t grow. It’s as natural a process as that.
~Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche #chogyamtrungparinpoche #chogyamtrungpa #buddhaquotes #bodhisattva #meditation #mindfulness #buddhismquotes #sanfrancisco

Compassion is not logical. It’s basically spacious and generous. A compassionate person might not be sure whether he is being compassionate to you or whether you are being compassionate to him, because compassion creates a total environment of generosity. Generosity is implied; it just happens, rather than you making it happen. It’s just there, without direction, without me, without “for them.” It’s full of joy, a spontaneously existing grin of joy, constant joy.

When things fall apart and we can’t get the pieces back together, when we lose something dear to us, when the whole thing is just not working and we don’t know what to do, this is the time when the natural warmth of tenderness, the warmth of empathy and kindness, are just waiting to be uncovered, just waiting to be embraced. This is our chance to come out of our self-protecting bubble and to realize that we are never alone. This is our chance to finally understand that wherever we go, everyone we meet is essentially just like us. Our own suffering, if we turn toward it, can open us to a loving relationship with the world.
~Pema Chödrön #pemachodron #meditation #mindfulness #sanfrancisco #dharmaquotes #dharma

If you have confidence in yourself and you develop some way of overcoming ego, then true compassion can be radiated to others. So the main point in working with people is to appreciate and manifest simplicity rather than trying to create new theories or categories of behavior. The more you appreciate simplicity, the more profound your understanding becomes. Simplicity begins to make much more sense than speculation.
~Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche #dharmaquotes #buddhistquotes #meditation #mindfulness #meditationpractice #sanfrancisco #trungparinpoche

If one wishes for suffering not to happen to people and the earth, it begins with a kind heart.

Cheerful Shambhala Day!
Join us tonight to celebrate the new year.

Shambhala Day marks the beginning of the New Year and represents one of the most important traditions of Shambhala Buddhism.

The mouse is the first symbol in the Asian astrological cycle, and is therefore associated with newness and beginnings. On this New Year’s Day, we can aspire to enter 2020 and Shambhala New Year with the spirit of a fresh start and a renewed trust in the basic goodness that connects us.

Based on the traditional Tibetan New Year’s celebration of Losar, the day is calculated astrologically according to the Tibetan lunar calendar and changes every year to coincide with the annual lunar cycles.

Our annual holidays mark the rhythm of our shared experience and culture and provide the opportunity for us to join together. Shambhala Day is particularly associated with reflecting upon the year that has passed and setting our intentions for the future.

Shambhala Meditation Center of San Francisco

Kindness is king, Compassion is queen.
Be famous for your love.
~Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche

Dear San Francisco Shambhala Community,

Please join us on January 27th, Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 PM, to share our visions with each other for our center in 2019. Last fall we had a successful membership drive and now we are at a place where it is time to envision how we want to go forward.

With the coming of the new year, we have an open opportunity for planning, and your voice is important. Together we can shape what kind of programs and activities we would like to offer at our center in the coming year.

What is your heart's desire? What would cause your scheduling conflicts to fade into the background? What do you want to see?

There will be invitations to help with small and large aspects of the center, and to share with your community what you’re inspired to contribute to! How can we create an inspirational community rising?

Would it be…

An exploration of the teachings on karma?
A weekend or weekthun meditation retreat?
Are you inspired to volunteer and help plan for the
center?
Do you want to help bring the community together to
socialize?
Or do you yearn to engage in the community of San
Francisco, getting to know our neighbors and
causes close to your heart?

These are suggestions—and we all want to hear your ideas.

One example we are considering is an opportunity for our entire sangha to engage in a Mahayana series of teachings through Shambhala Online, and we would love you to come on Sunday and let us know if you are interested in supporting or attending this series.

We will explore some ideas together on Sunday, so please join your community at our next gathering—this Sunday, January 27th, from 2 to 4 PM—to explore all our aspirations and see how we can contribute to making our center rise!

We hope to see you there.
