Today marks the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. In recalling that horrific day, and the wars and suffering that followed, we honor those who were lost, those who served, and those whose lives were altered forever. In reflecting on our nation’s collective loss, we hope it becomes clearer that we have more in common than what divides us and can find ways to come together. Guided by our core values of unconditional love and radical inclusion, GLIDE continues to strive for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of a beloved community in our lifetime. The pursuit of peace at home and abroad has never been more critical.

Thank you to everyone who showed up to GLIDE last Friday, as we teamed up with The DOPE Project and St James Infirmary to hold space and recognize Overdose Awareness Day as a community.

As today is Overdose Awareness Day, GLIDE is proud to be an organization that believes strongly in embracing harm reduction rather than criminalizing drug/substance use disorder or other punitive systems for various human behaviors. We are committed to respecting the choices of individuals and helping people no matter where they are —that includes understanding and addressing the root causes of drug use disorder, including individual or systemic harms. We hold a deep understanding of the often winding and difficult road to recovery. Overdose Awareness Day is a moment for remembering those we have lost and acknowledging the grief of the families and friends left behind. It is also an opportunity for the harm reduction community to come together and advocate for lasting change.

As we grieve we recognize that Janice would want us to keep the service, celebration, and mission of GLIDE going strong! We want to highlight GLIDE's program: Daily Free Meals, which serves three meals a day, 364 days a year. This program began in 1969 as a weekly volunteer-run potluck for 50 people, and now serves around 2,000 meals a day.

Our Co-Founder Janice Mirikitani was a social justice advocate before there was a social justice movement. She took deep pride in serving the most marginalized communities in the Tenderloin, especially children and families. Janice was truly a gift to our community. We will miss her every day, and are endlessly grateful for her presence and inspiration. In lieu of flowers, a GLIDE Memorial Fund for Janice Mirikitani has been established to support programs serving women and children, and donations in celebration of Janices's legacy can be made online at glide.org/janicemirikitani.

General information

GLIDE offers comprehensive support services to San Francisco’s vulnerable and marginalized populations to overcome the barriers of poverty, violence, homelessness and substance use disorders. We provide a spiritual home for all through our uplifting Sunday Celebrations at 9:00 and 11:00 am every week. GLIDE respects the dignity of every individual in our community, particularly during times of hardship. No matter how many times a person falls, they are always welcome at GLIDE and given another chance at recovering, rehabilitating, moving toward self-sufficiency and developing personally and spiritually. GLIDE’s social services were launched in 1969 when a handful of volunteers began serving a Monday night meal to people on the street. Since then, GLIDE has become one of San Francisco’s largest and most comprehensive providers of innovative programs and services, including a Daily Free Meals Program, HIV/HepC Prevention, Harm Reduction, Walk-In Center, Family, Youth and Childcare Services, and Violence Intervention Programs.
