[02/28/21]   Prayer of Confession for Everyone

God of our ancestors, we come to you confessing that we have set our minds on human things. We have sought to gain the world—so many things to buy, so many things to do. Yet we are not satisfied. Life’s meaning eludes us. Your ways seem out of date; your promises appear as the hopes and dreams of a past generation. But in our hearts, we sense an eternal design which is for all generations, a way of life more satisfying than we have allowed ourselves to explore. O God, we confess our need for you.

[02/21/21]   Prayer of Confession for today’s service

Have mercy on your church, O God, for we forget the covenant into which you call us. We muddle along in our self-serving schemes rather than waiting on your word. We follow the path of least resistance without seeking your higher way. We forget our baptism into a faith community built on trust and forgiveness. We turn from the vision of heaven to the treacherous hell of competing egos. O God, we turn to you to lead us to a new day. According to your steadfast love, forgive us, we pray. Amen

[02/07/21]   Prayer of Confession for today

Who are we to claim equality with you, Ruler of all worlds? Yet we try to order you around when it is we who should be taking orders. At times, we act as if we can get along without you. In our church, we often pretend that we don’t need other congregations. We hoard the gospel as if it were our possession, and thus we do not follow its mandates. We bend your law to our own whims and then excuse our disobedience. Forgive us, God. We are not worthy to carry the name of Christ. Restore us to yourself, we pray. Amen.

[01/31/21]   Prayer of Confession for today’s service

Faithful God, we have claimed to have more knowledge than we really possess. We have presumed to judge others on the basis of our limited understanding. We have gasped for freedom without taking full responsibility for our actions. Our witness is weak, and is directed primarily toward those with whom we prefer to associate. By our actions, some of our sisters and brothers are excluded, some are misled, and some are unjustly accused. If we have violated another’s conscience, if we have caused someone to fall, we are deeply sorry. For failing to do all Christ expects of the church, we repent and seek your forgiveness. Amen

[01/24/21]   Prayer of Confession for today's service

Sovereign God, we reluctantly confess that we have installed our own gods in our lives. They take our time. They use our resources. They extract from us care and devotion. We do not like to hear that our way of life is endangered. Yet we sometimes realize that innocent steps into self-indulgence are really deliberate strides away from you. We hear distant echoes of warning and judgement. O God, we want to return to you before it is too late. We repent of everything in our lives that cuts us off from you. Here our prayer. Amen.

[01/17/21]   Prayer of Confession for this morning service

We confess to you, God of our ancestors, that we have heard your word but ignored its witness. We have nodded agreement with your truth, but we follow our own ways. Your commands are frozen on paper, for we do not warm to their possibilities for our lives. As the word became flesh in Christ, we pray it may come alive in us. Melt our rigid perceptions and prejudices. Break down our resistance to change. Link us together in a community of faith, boldly receptive to the gospel. We want to be a communion of forgiven and forgiving sinners. Amen.

[01/10/21]   Prayer of Confession – Everyone
Creator God, you have created us, but we have chosen to go our own way. You have reclaimed us, but we have, by our arrogant attitudes and actions, rejected the claim. You have sent your Holy Spirit to break into our controlled and unimaginative routines, and we have not appreciated that burst of creative energy. We are ready now, ready to admit that our ways are full of dangerous byways. Our mistakes and failures have often come because, in our false pride, we have not listened to you. Save us again by your forgiving love. Amen.

[12/27/20]   Prayer of Confession for today’s service

We bring our prayers to you, gracious God, seeing that there is more to life than the ways we have known. We are drawn to the Messiah, yet we shrink from following where faith leads. We are afraid of what we might lose if we are guided by the Spirit. Thoughts of sacrifice and servanthood are not appealing to us. We are reluctant to enter into a close relationship with you. We think we know, better than you, what is best for us. Forgive our arrogance. Help us see the Christ. Amen.

[12/20/20]   CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION: (in unison)
Just and righteous God, the child in a manager leads us back to you. We have tried to ignore you, to deny your reality, to make it through life on our own. We have become accustomed to evil, to cynicism and exploitation, to dull routines and artificial excitements. O God, we long for something better. We want to rediscover integrity, faithfulness, and true joy. In the awesome simplicity of new-found life amid the frightening complexity of all that distracts us from you, we repent and seek our freedom in Christ. Hear us, holy God. Amen.

[12/13/20]   Prayer of Confession for today’s service:

Awesome God, we confess our fear to let down our guard, to feel the wonder, to believe the good news. Why would love choose to live among us, who are so unloving in our words and deeds? Why would you choose to place Trusting Innocence in the hands of sinners like us? We are afraid to bow down, lest we be accused of sentimental weakness. We hesitate to embrace the joy, lest in turn to disappointment in the cruel realities of this world. Forgive us, God, and awaken the child within us, we pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

[12/06/20]   Prayer of Confession for today's service
God of glory, we confess that we have not recognized you in the midst nor listened for your voice. Our faith is fragile, and our iniquity goes unrecognized amid our massive self-concern. We have lived as if we have no need to account for the life we have been given. Our church is focused more on our own survival than on its mission in the world. We come to you today with sincere repentance for our neglect. We have failed to prepare the way for Christ’s entry into our everyday environment. Pardon and change us, we pray. Amen.
