City Church San Francisco

Dear City Church friends,

What do we say in a week where our differences once again rise to the surface in sharp relief, and we know the only thing that truly binds us is our life in Jesus together? What do we say when we are a complicated mix of people, strongly prioritizing different values? What do we say when we feel the burden to choose among options that don’t fully represent the good we long to see in the world?

Perhaps you’re finding yourself more curious about the “other” who voted differently than you— more likely to reach across divides, ask questions, and do the work of love. Perhaps you’re feeling concerned for the fear and hatred that’s leaking out onto sidewalks and schools today. We feel both. You know what has encouraged us most? The way we’ve witnessed many of you trying to center yourselves in the presence of God and seek the way of Jesus in this season. Here is a sampling of thoughts from our community:

“More walk and less hate-filled talk. I choose to act locally and extend a hand to understand those who voted differently than I. I expect the same in return.” — Jalyn Feth

“I’ve been affected by this far more than I thought. I’m so glad I memorized Psalm 146 at the beginning of this election cycle. It’s still my mantra.” — Barbara Lyon

“My mind is filled right now with the many faces and names of friends who wake up every morning to bring more kindness and dignity to this world. Friends who have gone to all corners of the earth to help those who are most in need. Friends who work in the Tenderloin here in SF. Friends who welcome, befriend, and help refugees. Friends who bring light into prisons and hospitals and under-funded schools every day. Friends who are raising their kids to be tender and empathetic. Friends who listen and read and strive to learn about and love people who are different from them. We voted yesterday, but now I see our work has just begun. In a world that could easily succumb to hate, fear, and abuse, let's not give up one inch of ground. Let's start with kindness.” — Caroline Knowles

As pastors, we’re doing this inner work, too, not dismissing our personal experience but bringing it to God honestly to be shared, heard and held. Regardless of our choice of candidate, we remind ourselves that our trust is not in princes, but in the God of Jacob. We remind ourselves that what the Lord requires of us is to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God. We remind ourselves that renewal and resurrection is found as we follow the way of Jesus on a road of suffering for and with others.

This Sunday we’ll create space at both campuses for additional prayer for our nation, its people and its leaders. Please stay tuned for how else we might encourage one another toward fruitful action in the coming days. Until we gather Sunday in all our beautiful and challenging diversity at the communion table, sharing in the life and love of Jesus, I leave you with this prayer adapted from Rachael Wussow. I believe any of us could pray this prayer:

For those who woke in fear, questioning the future of our country,

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For those who wish others understood the values that guided their vote,

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For those who feel more vulnerable now because of their gender, ethnicity, orientation, or religion,

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For those who feel emboldened in using aggression and violence to make people different than them feel small,

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For women everywhere who feel the all too familiar ache of double standards and objectification,

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For the learning we all need to do about how to love God and love our neighbor as ourselves,

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Help us trust you with our future, today and everyday, and cling to a hope that transcends candidate, party, and nation. Strengthen us to say “no” to fear, suspicion, and self-interest every day. Wake us to act on our “yes” to forgiveness, humility, and openheartedness. In the name of Jesus and in the hope of Your Kingdom coming, Amen.

Grace and Peace,
From the Pastors of City Church

This Sunday, June 19
Services will begin with a special time of lamentation

As a reflection on the tragic shooting in Orlando last week, this week's services will begin with a period of lamentation. We will begin the services promptly, so please try to arrive as close to the starting time as possible. This is a time for everyone—including children—to come together and acknowledge the pain in the world and the light that is not overcome by the darkness.
