Taste of Buddhism - "How Things Exist"

Scott Snibbe will be leading a Taste of Buddhism discussion and meditation "How Things Exist" Sunday morning at 10:30am Pacific Time.

The Buddhist view on reality, called emptiness, combines the awe of scientific knowledge with the inner, experiential knowledge that comes from meditation and critical reasoning to arrive at a feeling of interconnectedness. This is the first in a series of discussions with meditations exploring the Buddhist understanding of reality, beginning with an exploration of how objects can be analyzed in terms of their parts, focusing on an object of great attachment to us, our smartphone.

Taste of Buddhism - "The Myths We Live by" with Karuna Cayton

Taste of Buddhism - "The Myths We Live by"
with Karuna Cayton
Sunday, December 13, 2020 – 10:30 AM - 12:00 noon PST
on Facebook LIVE"We don't see what is there, and what we do see is not there"
Geshe Gelek ChodhaAs Karuna points out, in Buddhist philosophy and psychology all problems arise as a result of just one cause: not knowing how things really exist. This "not knowing" (ignorance) both misperceives how things are but then adds its own interpretation. These are "myths" it projects onto everything, every experience, every moment. In Buddhist thought there are many myths that are projected. In this series we will look at several of the most predominant myths that essentially make us less healthy human beings. By knowing, first, that we are even hypnotized by wrong perception we can then integrate correct perception and develop a continual path of fulfillment.
About the Presenter:
Karuna Cayton has been a practicing Buddhist for over 40 years. For over twenty years Karuna Cayton has worked as a psychotherapist, business psychologist, and coach to help people achieve a more balanced life. This program is presented free of charge via Facebook LIVE on Tse Chen Ling Center for Tibetan Buddhist Studies' page Your generous donations are essential for the continuation of programs like this.
This program is the final “episode” in Karuna’s Taste of Buddhism series, The Myths We Live By. The four talks build on one another, but it is not necessary to see them all to get good flavor and benefit! "Madhyamaka is Not Nihilism" with Dr. Jay Garfield

Join us tonight!

Madhyamaka is Not Nihilism” - Dr. Jay L. Garfield
November 17th - 6-8pm US PT

Nāgārjuna (c. 2d C CE) is the founder of the Madhyamaka school of Buddhist philosophy, and easily, after the Buddha himself, the most influential philosopher in the Mahāyāna Buddhist tradition.
Jay L. Garfield will explain why a nihilistic reading of Nagarjuna is unjustified. He will show that Nāgārjuna is in fact a robust realist, and that Madhyamaka provides an analysis, not a refutation of existence.
This class will be presented via Zoom. You must register in advance. Register here:

Bay Area Centers' Lhabab Düchen Celebration

Starts tomorrow!

Join the Bay Area FPMT Centers in a joint celebration of Lhabab DÜchen this Saturday November 7th!

One of the four great holy days in the Tibetan calendar, Lhabab Düchen marks the anniversary of Shakyamuni Buddha’s return to Earth after spending three months in the God Realm of Thirty-Three, a higher realm where his mother was reborn after she died shortly after giving him birth. The Buddha traveled to this realm in order to repay her kindness by giving teachings to liberate her from samsara.

This year Lhabab Düchen falls on November 7th. While gathering together physically in each of our Centers is still beyond reach, all four of the Bay Area FPMT Centers are working together on this day:
Tse Chen Ling Center for Tibetan Buddhist Studies will begin this auspicious day by offering the 8 Mahayana Precepts and leading the recitation of the morning practices advised by Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
Gyalwa Gyatso (Ocean of Compassion) Buddhist Center will then lead sutra and prayer recitations.
Land of Medicine Buddha will lead Lama Chöpa in Tibetan from their gompa as well as a Namgyalma Practice session*.
We will wrap up the day in the gompa at Vajrapani Institute with Tonglen Meditation and Dedication.

All events are free to attend and you can find the link here:
