I've been thinking a lot about a tradition of writing a Torah so that (nearly) every column begins with the letter vav. It's common enough that some Tikkuns also follow this tradition. In any case, I was wondering the origins of the tradition and did a quick google search only to discover that there's not much written about the subject. However, one of the clearest descriptions was written by David Morgenstern. I didn't even know he had this blog in all the years we were blessed to work together. It is nice to remember him and his wealth of knowledge today, as every day!

5782-2021
Rosh Hashanah
May we all be inscribed
in the book of life with peace and prosperity for a sweet new year.

Shalom and Shanah Tova,

Rabbi Sami Samuel Barth

I’m looking forward to meeting the many of you who, up until now,
I’ve only had the pleasure of getting to know through a
screen. Who knew we existed from the neck down?!
I’m honored and excited to be spending the High Holy
Day season with you, and look forward to the chance to
connect with each of you in a fuller, deeper way over
the Days of Awe.

-Rabbi Aura
Biography
Rabbi Aura Ahuvia is a skilled singer, guitar player and teacher. She has a wide variety of experience in leadership, having served Reform, Renewal, Reconstructionist, Conservative and unaffiliated congregations. She currently serves as Board President of ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal, through which she was ordained as Rabbi. She holds two Masters degrees, in Journalism and in Judaic
Studies, from the University of Michigan, and once upon a time, served as a congregational program director. Recently, she has turned her attention toward the confluence between mind-body “skills” and Jewish wisdom and tradition, by pursuing
instructor certification with The Center for Mind Body Medicine.

Rabbi Aura recently returned to her hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she lives with her husband and Covid-dog, Nicky. She has two grown sons.

From the teachings of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel
“Our goal should be to live life in radical amazement. ....get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. Everything is phenomenal; everything is incredible; never treat life casually. To be spiritual is to be amazed.” “People of our time are losing the power of celebration. Instead of celebrating we seek to be amused or entertained. Celebration is an active
state, an act of expressing reverence or appreciation. To be entertained is a passive state--it is to receive pleasure afforded by an amusing act or a spectacle.... Celebration is a confrontation, giving attention to the transcendent meaning of one's actions.”
“Mankind will not perish for want of information; but only for want of appreciation. The beginning of our happiness lies in the understanding that life without wonder is not worth living . What we lack is not a will to believe but a will to wonder” (God in Search of Man: A Philosophy of Judaism)
“Never once in my life did I ask God for success or wisdom or power or fame. I asked for wonder, and it was given to me”
“The primary purpose of prayer is not to make requests. The primary purpose is to praise, to sing, to chant. Because the essence of prayer is a song, and we cannot live without song. Prayer may not save us. But prayer may make us worthy of being saved”
“Prayer begins at the edge of emptiness.” “Prayer begins where our
power ends.”

General information

Congregation Beth Israel Judea is a center for progressive, egalitarian Judaism located in southwest San Francisco. Our multigenerational, participatory community welcomes all Jews and interfaith families along with their partners and friends. We value celebrations of the spirit, Jewish culture, our children’s education and life-long learning, music, social justice and Tikkun Olam (the healing of the world). We hope that you will find a comfortable and nurturing place in our spiritual community. BIJ worship seeks to nurture the Jewish soul. From our Friday evening Kabbalat Shabbat (welcoming the Sabbath) and Shabbat morning prayers, to the holidays and festivals, our services present a unique blend of traditional and contemporary practice, and always with beautiful music. Beth Israel Judea offers excellent educational programs for children, families and adults. Our younger students enjoy Hebrew school and Sunday Religious School in state-of-the-art facilities with top-notch and nurturing educators. Weekly Torah study and a wide variety of other learning programs are available for adults and families. At BIJ we pride ourselves on our welcome and warmth. Jews and non-Jews alike are welcome at all our services and events. We know how important it is to find a spiritual home where Jewish community is valued and real, for Jews and for their non-Jewish family and friends. The congregation is a member of the Union for Reform Judaism. Here, you can make a difference in the temple and its programs, find new friends, nurture your faith, serve the Jewish people and the world around us, and cheer with our crowd at a baseball game. It's all up to you. Come join us, you are welcome!
