Pastoral Reflection on the Entrance into Great Lent - The Diocese of the West

Last year we did not get to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in America quite like we anticipated we would. As the pandemic comes to an end, the Diocese of the West will be publishing a series of articles, interviews, reflections, stories, and videos related to the history, experience, worship, and life of our treasured Diocese. Make sure you follow our website and diocesan social media accounts (Facebook and Twitter) for when they post and without further ado, a pastoral reflection on entering Great Lent by Fr. Axios!

Earlier today, Friday, February 19, 2021, the enthronement of His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije, Archbishop of Pec, Metropolitan of Belgrade-Karlovci, and Patriarch of Serbia took place in the course of the Divine Liturgy at Holy Archangel Michael Cathedral, Belgrade, Serbia.

His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon transmitted a letter of congratulations to His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije yesterday, offering his fraternal prayers for the ministry of the newly elected Patriarch: https://www.oca.org/news/headline-news/metropolitan-tikhon-congratulates-newly-elected-serbian-patriarch-porfirije

[02/17/21]   Many have asked His Eminence how Fr. Paul Waisanen is doing. Here is an update from his wife, Mat. Judith: We have just learned that Fr. Paul has a mass in his left kidney and that both kidneys are only functioning at 30% capacity. The high calcium was hard on his kidneys and it takes time for them to heal from that. With time that 30% can improve. They probably will have to remove it or part of it. We will be seeing another specialist in regards to that. So far we still don’t know the source causing the high calcium. Thank you for your prayers. Our hope in the Lord and his will for us.

On Thursday evening, January 28, His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon led the 2021 March for Life for the faithful of the Orthodox Church in America. This March was held virtually this year because of the present health situation: https://www.facebook.com/watch/live/?v=116350623643147

His Beatitude served a Molieben in Three Hierarchs Chapel at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary, and then offered a reflection: https://www.oca.org/reflections/metropolitan-tikhon/address-at-the-virtual-march-for-life

After his reflection, His Beatitude joined seminarians and watched the rest of the event from St. Vladimir’s Seminary.

An address was delivered by Dr. Ana Iltis, professor and director of the Center for Bioethics, Health and Society at Wake Forest University and professor of philosophy at St. Vladimir’s Seminary. Orthodox Christian representatives from three organizations that support women in crisis pregnancies, Emily Wilkinson of Orthodox Christians for Life, Kathy Kovalak from ZOEforLife, and Dr. Chris Humphrey from Vision for Life, highlighted their ongoing work. His Eminence Archbishop Michael of the Diocese of New York and New Jersey - OCA offered a reflection and a closing prayer.
