We got all dressed up for the Episcopal Impact Fund's Night of Lights. I broke my zoom rule and actually wore nice slacks instead of my shorts. A delightful evening. Our daughter even joined in. Thanks Kathleen, Marc, the choir and everyone else who made this such a delightful occasion.

Malcolm, the times you have blessed our marriage are very special moments for Kent and me. I thank God for our friendship often. God bless you!

The @elca ordained @mmrohrer a bishop at @gracecathedral this afternoon. It was magnificent. Congratulations. We opened up the plaza again. For a few moments everything felt normal again.

Hyping Atheism

Why do we regard COVID vaccination as a matter of individual freedom rather than as an opportunity for us to help protect children and other vulnerable people? Immanuel Kant helped to define the Enlightenment. He also cared passionately about our freedom to act morally, for the sake of others.

We call it freebirding not empty-nesting. We had a romantic evening of yoga @gracecathedral fully underway when I got the call to rush immediately to the bedside of a dying friend.
Afterwards on our way home we stopped for a romantic walk up tank hill and then picked up pizza.
All within 24 hours of leaving our youngest at the airport on the way to college!

Every summer the boys of the @gracecathedral Men & Boys Choir spend a week at the @bishopsranch rehearsing for the year. These young men inspire me with their commitment to excellence. They also remind me to have fun.

What a pleasure to join them, to have the chance to preach and horse around.

27 years ago today. I was ordained at @stmartins_davis in Davis, California. That day I felt so hopeful about the future and now it feels like my dreams have been more than realized. I love this life!
It’s so hard to believe that for exactly half my existence I’ve been a member of the clergy. I’m always trying so hard to remember what it feels like to be an ordinary person. I wish I were better at that. This is a picture of my friends at my ordination to the priesthood at @stclementsberk six months later.

I was so sorry to hear the news that Jim Hormel died early this morning but very grateful I had the chance to pray with him at his bedside in the hospital.

Jim was the first openly gay American ambassador and a real hero in my life. He was so gentle, thoughtful, intelligent, observant and wise. He really took the time to listen to me and did a wonderful job speaking up for justice, making real change and bringing people together.

His family business brought one of our favorite foods to Hawaii. You can't see the whole picture... but  here is my wife Heidi with our dear friend and a little can of spam. God bless you Jim!

San Francisco’s first African-American neighborhood, dating from the 1850s to about 1920 was located along the western fringes of Chinatown, centering on Powell and Stockton Street, between Pacific and Clay Streets, and the adjacent downslope cross streets; Clay, Washington, Jackson and Pacific, plus a small part of North Beach.

The first black churches were AME Bethel Church on Jackson Street near Powell and AME Zion Church on Stockton near Pacific. A third church, the First Colored Church/ Third Baptist Church) was in North Beach on Grant near Filbert).

When our own Grace Church at Powell and Jackson Sts. moved to its new California/Stockton Sts. location, the old church building (see photo) was sold to AME Bethel Church (renamed Union Bethel AME Church).

The Rev. E. T. Cottonman built a new church on the site in 1894, but it burned in 1906. A second church was built on the site in 1913 and used until 1945 when the congregation moved to the western addition (Laguna Street).

Nob Hill’s African-American neighborhood was largely gone by 1920. The big influx of African-American residents to San Francisco began in 1940 and was centered on the Bayview and Hunter’s Point neighborhoods, close to the shipyards where most men worked.

This is a photo of that building which served our congregation long before we became @gracecathedral. Thanks to Cathedral Archivist Michael Lampen who wrote this.
