Monday's Devotional - June 1 Today, as a "bookend" to Pentecost, I am sharing the story-telling video "The Day When God Made Church" read by the author Rebekah Hutto and her daughter, Hannah Ruth. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHURCH!
In light of recent events surrounding the death of George Floyd and the ongoing damaging effects of systemic racism, our friends at Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC have issued a 21-DAY RACE EQUITY CHALLENGE called "Better When We're Back Together." Even before this pandemic, when groups across our nation and the world gathered together, there was often inequity in the gatherings along lines of race. This inequity is a part of our history as a people that we cannot hide, and to ignore is to go against the will of Christ which is “to unite all things in him” (Ephesians 1:10). Starting tomorrow, PENTECOST SUNDAY, follow the link below to access a comprehensive list of resources to READ, WATCH, LISTEN and NOTICE. These resources will challenge you to educate yourself about systemic racism and our task as Christian people to fight for justice. PICK ONE of the resources listed every day for 21 days. DIVERSIFY your understanding by doing some of each. TRACK AND REFLECT by using the planning tool on the Myers Park website.
Monday's Devotion
We are loving the playground at St. Barnabas! ❤️
Is anyone up to “party bridge” mid day? We could include lunch.? Weekly, monthly or bimonthly?

Seeking the way of Christ together with minds that search, hearts that share, and lives that serve. St. Barnabas is an Earth Care and More Light congregation.

Sunday Worship: 8:30 and 11 a.m. Sunday School: 9:45 a.m. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. Our defining vision describes this faith community well: Seeking the way of Christ together with Minds that search Hearts that share Lives that serve Whether through worship, music, Christian education for all ages, our programs for children and youth, or outreach to the neighborhood, city, and the world, the people of St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church invite you to join us. We believe that our church family is unique in its dedication to learning, sharing, and service. We welcome your distinctive energies and skills and encourage you to apply them in our common journey of Christian discipleship.

[05/25/20]   On this Memorial Day, we lift up prayers of thanksgiving and mourning written by Mark Koenig, Director of Presbyterian Church (USA) Ministry at the United Nations:

Eternal God,
from whom all life comes, to whom all life returns,
we remember all who served our country in the military.
We remember and we give thanks.
We give thanks for sacrifices made and losses endured.
We give thanks for acts of courage, grace and hope.
We give thanks for our brothers and sisters who gave the full measure of devotion.
We give thanks for those we knew well and those we never met.
For the life, goodness, faith, courage, and love that was in each one, we give thanks.
We pray for our brothers and sisters who are recovering from wounds in body, mind, spirit, or soul.
Work healing in them in all the forms that healing takes.
We pray for those who provide care to them.
Show us ways that we can extend care and support.
We pray for families and friends and all who grieve for loved ones who have died.
Meet them in the valley of death's shadow.
Embrace them in the healing warmth of
your comfort, grace and love.
Grant them and all of us the assurance
that nothing in life or in death
can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord,
in whose name we pray.
May the day soon come when swords are beaten into plowshares, war is studied no more, and all peoples and your world will know peace.
May we work for that day.
We pray through Jesus Christ.
Amen.

I couldn’t have said this better myself! I’m grateful for St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church, More Light Presbyterians and I am grateful to work with Owen Gray!

We are excited to share that Saint Barnabas is now a member congregation of More Light Presbyterians! As part of our commitment to welcoming all God's children, we commit that gender identity and sexual orientation serve as no barrier to church membership, celebration of sacraments, celebration of marriage, and ordination to the offices of deacon, elder, or pastor. This is a belief ratified by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA)- our denomination’s highest governing body—and embodied by our staff and congregation. At St. Barnabas, you are loved. Plain and simple.

To find out more about the mission of More Light Presbyterians, visit their website: MLP.org.
