Pope Francis' recent Apostolic Letter, Antiquum Ministerium, highlighted the importance of recognizing the lay people who respond to the call to pass on the faith to the next generation. We're excited to introduce a "Catechist Spotlight"--an opportunity to thank our own dedicated catechists for their joyful witness of faith.

Our first catechist in the spotlight is ✨Mary Ortman✨, one of our longest serving volunteers! Mary teaches Grade 7, the first year of Confirmation preparation for middle school students. Parents praise Mary for inspiring her students to grow in relationship with Jesus and engaging them in deeper understanding of their faith.

Asked why she is a Catechist, Mary says, “It is a privilege to pass on the Faith, and perhaps the most worthwhile thing you'll ever have the opportunity to do. The fruit of your efforts may not always be evident right away, but the seeds you plant can make a difference in the life of a soul.” In class, Mary emphasizes devotion to the saints and a life of prayer. She is inspired by Bishop Robert Barron, Fr. Mike Schmitz, and Fr. William Saunders.

Mary and her husband have been parishioners of Our Lady of Hope since 2006. They have a 21-year-old son who attends Hillsdale College. When Mary is not volunteering at OLOH, she can be found helping at Birthright.

The Arlington Catholic Herald featured one of our Our Lady of Hope Catholic School Crusaders this week! Great job, Nina! Spices and baking items are always scarce at the food pantries, and the families served by Catholic Charities, Diocese of Arlington will so appreciate your thoughtful project.

Nina Baker, a seventh grader at Our Lady of Hope School in Potomac Falls, holds a sign of thanks after collecting more than 100 pounds of spices to donate to a food bank in Sterling. She worked with diocesan Catholic Charities and the school community to organize the drivers for her confirmation service project. Read more in the 2021 Graduation Issue: https://bit.ly/3hEXRcE

Most Catholics can point to three or four instances of Scripture in the Mass, but did you know that even the greeting is right out of the Bible?

Have you noticed how the Mass is steeped in Scripture? What's your favorite example?

Saints come in groups

Did you see OLOH seminarian John Meyerhofer's latest contribution to the Arlington Catholic Herald?

Is there a pair of saints that have influenced you? Tell us about them in the comments!

Saints come in groups Have you ever noticed that saints seem to come in groups? The classic example of this is St. Augustine, who was moved to conversion by St. Anselm’s kindness and preaching. But can you imagine five saints in the same city at the same time? I recently learned that Sts. Turibius, Rose of Lima, Martin...

What Are Home Missions? | USCCB 04/24/2021

What Are Home Missions? | USCCB

This weekend's special collection supports the Catholic Home Missions: the 80 dioceses in the United States that struggle to meet the basic pastoral needs of running a parish. What do the funds collected from the Catholic Home Missions Appeal do?

They support the education of priests, deacons, religious sisters and lay people, so the Eucharist and the word of God can nourish Catholics.

They support religious education, so Catholics can expand their knowledge of the faith and hand it down to the next generation.

They helps small parishes stay alive.

Please help your fellow Catholics in the practice of their faith. Learn more about the Catholic Home Missions at usccb.org/committees/national-collections/what-are-home-missions
