Southwest Orlando Jewish Congregation (SOJC) is a vibrant, family-friendly, Conservative synagogue committed to our diverse community and Judaism.
Southwest Orlando Jewish Congregation (SOJC, Ohalei Rivka) is a vibrant, family-friendly synagogue committed to our diverse kehillah (community) and world Jewry. Our congregation is made up of local families, adults and seniors. As the closest synagogue to the Walt Disney World resort, we welcome visiting guests to the Orlando area each Shabbat. SOJC promotes the values of Conservative Judaism, such as the importance of family, religious education, tikkun olam (repairing the world) and gemilut hassadim (acts of loving kindness). We offer family-friendly, participatory and fully egalitarian services each Shabbat and during every Festival. We encourage and provide learning opportunities for children, adults and families, and our religious school (pre-K through post B’nai Mitzvah) is one of the largest in the Orlando area. Our three (3) active youth groups keep our young people engaged and learning (grades 3-12). SOJC provides social opportunities for our members to connect with their friends in a warm, accepting and caring Jewish environment. Are you a member of SOJC? As residents of Central Florida, we know all too well what damage can be done by hurricanes. Needless to say, Hurricane Harvey has proven itself to be no ordinary storm, causing untold damage and taking a growing number of lives. There are many fine organizations collecting funds to help those whose lives are forever changed because of this storm. I would, however, encourage you to consider donating to one of the following Jewish organizations which will help in the recovery efforts needed for the affected Jewish communities:
The Jewish Federation of Greater Houston Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund
United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism Disaster Relief Fund
NECHAMA's Response to Hurricane Harvey
There is also work that can be done here. In conjunction with St. Lukes Methodist church, we have an opportunity to make "hygiene kits - http://www.umcor.org/…/Relief-Su…/Relief-Supply-Kits/hygiene" and "cleaning kits - http://www.umcor.org/…/Relief-S…/Relief-Supply-Kits/Cleaning" Use the links to find out what needs to be in each kit - PLEASE follow the directions EXACTLY as they are written and only include the items they have asked for. Bring any completed kits to SOJC by September 12 and we will deliver them to St. Lukes and from there they'll be transported to the affected areas.
May we all be blessed in the New Year with rain in its time and in its appropriate quantity.
