Unity Back in CommUNITY, Inc.

Unity Back in CommUNITY, Inc. (UBIC), formerly known as Unity Inspirational Gospel Choir, Inc. was founded in December 1995 by Dr. David Joseph Hardrick on the campus of Rollins College (Winter Park, FL). It was officially filed with the Rollins Student Government Association as a Rollins College Club. The inaugural leadership of UBIC consisted of an executive board composed of students from Rollins College and an advisory board composed of community members.

UBIC was Rollins College’s first gospel choir. It was sponsored by the Rollins College Black Student Union and Patrick J Powers, dean of the chapel. Recognized as an invaluable asset to the Rollins campus, the Black Student Union added a gospel choir representative position to its executive board. In fact, the choir was seen as such an asset, Dean Powers invited the choir to perform during the Sunday morning worship service. This was the first gospel choir to perform during the Sunday morning Catholic Mass and the beginning of something great.

Sunday, February 25, 1996, at 4:00 p.m., UBIC held its first Gospel Explosion, which became the organization’s annual GospelFest, in the Rollins College Knowles Memorial Chapel. This event was sponsored by the Rollins College Black Student Union (Dario J Moore, president) and Community Baptist Church (the late Rev. Dr. Henry McKinnon, pastor).

Monday, March 18, 1996, at 4:00 p.m., UBIC held its first Bowl-A-Thon at Aloma Bowling Center, Inc. (2530 Aloma Avenue Winter Park FL 32792). With the proceeds from this event, UBIC opened its first checking account with SunTrust (Winter Park, FL) with the help of Tom Sacha, vice president.
