How To Affirm Children

Parent Helps: Practical Tips You Can Use Today
Many children don't know how to listen without thinking about the next thing they want to say. Or if they do listen, they make statements like, "I know," or "I can do it better than that." Instead, teach children to affirm others in conversation. It's part of learning what it means to be a servant. Listening can be hard work. It requires that children think of the other person, not just of themselves.

Children can say, "I agree" or "You're right." Instead of launching into their own version of the story, teach them to encourage the other person first. "That must have been exciting," or "You saw a fun thing." Good responses in conversation are "Oh," "That's interesting," or to ask a question. Conversation can be self-serving or others-serving.

If your children continually talk and rarely listen, encourage them to affirm the last thing you said before they begin talking. Affirming others' speech is a skill that children will use forever and it helps them address a little of their own selfishness now. Furthermore, it makes conversations with children more pleasant and enjoyable. -Dr. Scott Turansky, National Center for Biblical Parenting

Teach Children What to Do Next Time

Do you feel like some days you have to discipline kids for the same things over and over again? The child who has a problem hitting, interrupting, or just being annoying to others may need a lot of correction.

It's these problems that are great candidates for a Positive Conclusion. Each time the negative behavior takes place, have the child take a short break and then come back to you for a debriefing. During that conversation, one of the questions should be, "What are you going to do differently next time?"

When you ask this question your child has to state the right response back to you. If Bill is frustrated with his brother Jack and responds by arguing or saying unkind things or grabbing, the right response is to talk constructively about the problem. If you continue to discipline Bill for these wrong responses and he continues to verbalize that the right response is to talk about it, eventually he is able to catch himself sooner and talk to Jack about the problem without using the negative behaviors. This takes time and repeated discipline sessions, but children learn by repetition and frequent, gently reminders.

Sometimes children don't know what they should have done differently. In fact, some parents are so used to telling their children what not to do, that they, themselves, haven’t even thought about what the right response should be. Sometimes the solutions are not easy. That's all the more reason to use this question with children. Both parent and child can brainstorm about alternatives to unwanted behavior.

By communicating the right response to you verbally, your child will learn to see the difference and begin to change.

This parenting tip is from the book, Home Improvement by Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, RN, BSN.

A Time to Practice Saying Thank You

Gratefulness is an important life quality because it helps us to be thankful for what we have instead of complaining about what we don't have. Gratefulness is a lifestyle but it starts by saying "Thank you" to others who bless us.

Begin now to prepare your children for receiving gifts. Talk about the importance of the giver, not just the gift. Teach children to look at the name tag first so they can be thinking of the person who gave the gift while they open it. Encourage children to express thanks to the giver, even if that person is not in the room at the time. A phone call to extended family or a thank you note to a distant friend can mean a lot.

Gift receiving sometimes provides that awkward moment when we want to ask, "What is this?" or discover that we already have one of these. Play a "What if" game with children to help them anticipate how they might say thank you in those situations.

Opening gifts can happen fast and then children are off playing with new toys and games. Helping them to take time to express gratefulness can extend the true meaning of Christmas past the few hours of Christmas Day. And don't forget to take time to thank the Lord for his special gift in Jesus Christ for us.

As we turn our attention to the Lord Jesus this Christmas, the following story will help kids and parents remember the Real Meaning of Christmas.

Practical Idea: download your copy of the “Real Meaning of Christmas” below, read the story to your children, or email the download to your parents suggesting that they read it to their families this Christmas season.

Children ask, “What is God really like?” Schools, friends, television, and other sources expose children to a variety of ideas. Much of what kids hear about “god” does not even resemble the God who reveals Himself in the Bible.

God delights to disclose Himself to all who seek Him. Knowing the Lord personally and enjoying His greatness is the highest privilege of every Christian! The Bible is the one inspired place to find out about God—His personality, His attributes, His Names, and His character. A child’s basic outlook and attitude toward life is shaped by the way he or she pictures God.

Introduce your child to our awesome God. Each week, explain and discuss one of God’s attributes, names, or character traits. Encourage your child to know God truly and intimately. Just as a jeweler delights in each facet of a beautiful diamond, your love for God grows as you examine each aspect of His character (see 1 Chronicles 29:11; Proverbs 2:4-5; Acts 17:24-25).
