Bridges of America Chaplaincy Services

Bridges of America Chaplaincy Services supports the mission and vision of Bridges of America’s holistic approach to recovery.

Bridges of America Chaplaincy Services supports the mission and vision of Bridges of America’s holistic approach to recovery and accommodates the mental (emotional, cognitive), physical, social, and spiritual needs of the persons served. Chaplains deliver, monitor, and facilitate a broad range of religious services that provide opportunities for all client/inmates to pursue individual religious beliefs and practices of their own choosing in a manner that is consistent with the security and good order of the facility. Furthermore, religion can be a significant agent of change for many individuals. Thus, chaplains serve as critical staff members that assist client/inmates who choose this path to enhance their knowledge of and commitment to the beliefs and practices of their faith. At the same time, chaplains work in collaboration with other clinical staff in support of formal treatment programs within the four-dimensional model

{Prison Ministry 2015 Conference}

North Florida Regional Chaplaincy Director Robert Brown of the Jacksonville Bridge had the opportunity to attend the 2015 Prison Ministry Conference hosted by the Episcopal Diocese of Florida in Fernandina Beach. Not only did the prison and post-release ministry Chaplains worship together, but they had the opportunity to hear national speakers like Byron Johnson, author of "More God, Less Crime". This was a great opportunity to network with other providers in the area and to enjoy the fellowship with other men and women who serve through prison ministry.

{Orlando Bridge - Bishop Henry Porter & West Coast Center...}

On February 11, the men of the Orlando Transition and Community Release Centers were blessed with a performance and inspirational message from Bishop Henry Porter and the West Coast Center for Human Development in Sarasota, FL. Bishop Porter encouraged the men to make the most of their current situation; to grow as much as possible so they are truly changed men once they are released. Here are some of his key concepts: "What is your rate of change as it relates to time?" "If you could see what was coming in your future, you would change faster to get there. " "Don't look at your obstacles. Look at your opportunities."

Innovative Dads

Congratulations to the Santa Fe Bridge on their new community partner, Innovative Dads. Created by Pastor Gerard Duncan, Innovative Dads ministers to men who may lack the support, accountability, knowledge and encouragement to be great Fathers. The mission of Innovative Dads is to equip men to become better fathers and role models for their children, families, and communities. We are really looking forward to this partnership!

Biblical View of Self Help – Mutual Help

Does God help those who help themselves?

Nowhere in Scripture will you find appropriate support for the statement, “God helps those who help themselves.” Whether you’re looking at life here from 30,000 feet or from the street level, you will actually find the opposite is true.

The Apostle Paul tells us to “work out [our] own salvation with fear and trembling” (Phil 2:12b); we’re to be active in our faith, not simply sitting back and doing nothing. So it almost sounds like this could be a biblical truth, doesn’t it?

God helps the helpless! Isaiah 25:4 declares, "For you have been a defense for the helpless, a defense for the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat..."

Apart from salvation, there is perhaps a way that the concept "God helps those who help themselves" is correct. As an example, if you asked me to help you move a piece of furniture, but then just watched me as I moved the furniture for you, I was not actually helping you. I would be doing the work for you. Many Christians fall into the trap of inactivity. Many Christians ask God for help, but then expect God to do everything Himself. They excuse this by pointing to the fact that God will provide according to His will and in His timing. However, this is not a reason for inactivity. As a specific example, if you are in need of a job, ask the Lord to help you find a job - but then be active in actually looking for a job. While it is in His power to do so, it is highly unlikely that God will cause employers to come looking for you!

2 Corinthians 1:4, “(God) who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

This conference is a great opportunity to network with other faith-based and community providers, professionals in the juvenile and criminal justice fields, educators, and other substance abuse providers. Our Chaplains thoroughly enjoyed the seminars and speakers, and most importantly, the opportunity to connect with like-minded providers with whom partnerships can be formed at each facility.

{Bradenton} Evangelism Explosion Graduation

At the conclusion of a very special day called "Celebration of Life", in which the women celebrate living clean and sober while embracing recovery with the support of their sisters, several ladies of the Bradenton Bridge participated in the Evangelism Explosion Graduation ceremony. Evangelism Explosion Prison Ministry is offered as a voluntary program through Bridges of America Chaplaincy Services. You can see from the ladies' faces that this is a joyful time of enjoying praise, worship, and each other's fellowship. Art Hallett and his team have been faithful volunteers at the Bradenton Bridge for years, and for that we are so thankful!
