Join Africa

What we are doing in Africa is the manifestation of what God is doing in the hearts of people at Summit Church. Find out how you can "Join Africa."

Hi, I'm Gibson from Malawi

A word of encouragement from World Relief Malawi Country Director, Gibson Nkanaunena.

Gibson Nkanaunena is the country director in Malawi for World Relief, an international aid and development ministry focusing on serving the most vulnerable a...

Check out what one of our global partners, Tazama Nia, is doing to prepare. Rather than use generic signage, they are contextualizing messaging to best posture for preventing spread of the virus in their community. Feel free to follow them for regular updates.

We are replacing all our signage in Ngando, based on what we are seeing in the community...
First of all, maybe because of a fatalistic worldview, people hear advice but don’t follow it - feeling that ultimately whatever they do won’t really make a difference... this our title - you CAN protect yourself!
Secondly, a lot of the advice includes things that are impossible in our context. Buy food ahead for a few weeks... work from home... a few examples. We decided our signs needed to be short, simple, clear and ALL things that are do-able in our context. (Tazama Nia has provided hand washing stations - now we are giving our masks as fast as they can be made).
Lastly, we took actual photos in our community - of people who are known. This is for US - for Ng’ando... not just for the wealthy.
Please pray that we can continue to bring TRUTH to our context!!!

In this post, Ayni shares her story which illustrates why the amazing work she does is so personal. She works closely with our partner Children's HopeChest in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She is one amazing woman among many to celebrate on International Women's Day.

Happy International Women’s Day! 🌷

While we value each woman who works alongside Children’s HopeChest, today we want to highlight Ayni, who leads I Care for the Nation CarePoint in Ethiopia.

Ayni has fiercely followed the calling that God placed on her heart to liberate women and families from domestic violence, despite facing incredible amounts of opposition. It is not only something that she is passionate about, but something that she herself has experienced.

We are thrilled to celebrate Ayni’s strength and courage as a leader, as well as her life’s mission to restore dignity for some of the most vulnerable women and children in her community. >>

32 hours of travel down and this team is still smiling! See you soon, Orlando!

After many tearful goodbyes, the Malawi Team is starting their journey back home. But they aren’t coming back empty-handed; they’ve got so many great stories to share about all the amazing work being done in Malawi!

This morning the Special Needs Camp did niceSERVE at a local hospital. The kids and their families had a great time giving back to their community and showing off some of their skills!

Today was the last day of Special Needs Camp. The kids did an amazing performance of the story of Jonah in a nearby village and shared the message of the week: God’s love is for everyone! As the team said some sad goodbyes, they were encouraged that these kids were headed back to their communities to do great things!

The Malawi Special Needs Camp got their niceSERVE on today! These kids had a great time putting their skills and talents to work cleaning up and praying for patients at a local hospital.

This afternoon the Special Needs Camp had a super fun time at the playground!

One of the really cool things about going to Malawi is getting to meet your sponsored child. Finally getting to meet the child you’ve known only through letters is such an amazing feeling!

Today was the first day of Special Needs Camp in Malawi. There was worship, crafts, dancing, three-legged races, and even a giant whale! You can be praying for the next three days of camp as the team continues to serve alongside COTN to show these kids just how much God loves them.

The Malawi Team spent today learning more about the great work Africa Windmill Project is doing toward food sustainability. They also got to visit COTN’s Widow’s Market, Feeding Program, and Girl’s Power Group.

Today was cultural immersion day in Malawi. The team joined Malawian families in their daily chores, cooked a meal together, and of course got some dancing in!

The Malawi Team made it to Lilongwe, Malawi! And still smiling after 46 hours of travel!

The Malawi Team is ready to start the long leg of their journey bright and early this morning!

Check out what Taran had to say in response to her time with one of Summit’s teams visiting our partnered CarePoint in Ethiopia this year!

Posts from partners who recently traveled are some of our favorite pieces of writing to share. It is remarkable to see how God connects us all through our shared humanity.

We hope that this blog from Ethiopia partner, Taran Haecherl, inspires you to ask yourself how you can “lose sight of the shore” in your life.

[09/11/18]   Happy Ethiopian New Year! 🇪🇹

On Saturday, the Summit education team along with COTN teachers took a trip out to Lake Malawi to have fun and relax as they prepare for the seminar starting this week!

Over the weekend, the special needs team and some from COTN had a chance to attend a soccer game—Malawi vs. South Africa!

The Summit team and COTN have been working hard to plan the 4-day camp which starts today!

Update today from team leader, Michelle: Day one of the teacher seminar is in the books! Teachers from Children of the Nations and neighboring schools learned about Numeracy through a variety of methods. Here, a secondary school teacher explains to his groups how Numeracy applies to teacher science concepts.

On Wednesday, the education team attended the closing ceremony of Big John's Primary School. The team enjoyed participating in the celebration of the students and the teachers at this very joyous occasion. Here, the administrators of the school honored the top performing students in each grade. The parents and friends of the students were proud to es**rt their student up to receive their honor.

The Children of the Nations Malawi Special Needs Team arrived this week!

From team leader, O.J. : “We arrived in Lilongwe this week and were greeted by our COTN friends and then went to a welcome ceremony. We are now at Njewa which is the COTN Malawi headquarters and our lodging for the duration. We just finished dinner and everything is going well!

As most of you know, we had a flight delay on Monday that forced an unplanned layover in Johannesburg. We got to add a new country to our passports and visited the apartheid museum and lived quite lavishly at the supplied hotel.

Thanks for your prayers and support! We are doing great and can’t wait for tomorrow and opportunities ahead.”

From team leader, Michelle: “Last week the education team had the privilege of visiting and assisting in assessments at Big John's Primary School in Mygawi. This is a picture of Esther, the head teacher of the school. She generously showed us around the school and introduced to the teachers. Esther is very passionate about her students and school and welcomed our team so warmly. We absolutely loved spending time with her and the teachers and are looking forward to interacting with them in the next couple weeks at the education seminar.”

The Malawi Education Team spent a day last week learning about Mgwayi, walking through the village, meeting people, and taking note of some of its fixtures like water sources and a maize mill.

[07/09/18]   The COTN Education Team from Summit arrived safely today in Malawi!

Ethiopia team had its first program day with the kids today. The topic at hand? Conflict resolution!

The Ethiopia team had the chance to hear Ayni share her story today. She is one inspiring woman. And she has an incredible team of staff and volunteers behind her.

Ethiopia team has arrived safely! But our luggage is still in Newark! 😅 All are tired and heading to sleep soon.

[06/12/18]   The Malawi Vision Team is safely back in Orlando. Thanks for all your prayers and support. We hope you're able to connect with your loved ones soon about their time in Malawi, "The Warm Heart of Africa."

[06/12/18]   The COTN Malawi Vision Team is back in the US. Last stop, Orlando!

Weekend update #2:

The team spent the day at Lake Malawi with the entire graduating class and teachers. It was a day filled with soccer, swimming, eating, and smiles all around!

The team was able to have lunch with their sponsored kids on Friday and then celebrate with the graduating class on Saturday!
