God our eternal father,
Who made our earth and all it contains,
Today we thank you for the gift of fathers
And for those who have fathered us as mentors and guides.
For us, there is one God, the Father who is the ultimate source of all things and the goal of our lives.
Generous and providing God,
We thank you for the good gifts you provide through fathers,
Guide them to be good role models and loving to all their children.
Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. Who never changes or casts a shifting shadow.
Blessing and just God,
We thank you for fathers who teach justice and uphold your truth,
Strengthen them to handle difficult situations in a loving way.
All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.
Protecting and kind God,
We thank you for those who father alone,
Support and guide them, help them to be a father like you.
Father to the fatherless, defender of widows— this is God, whose dwelling is holy.
Comforting and merciful God,
We thank you for good memories of fathers we have lost,
Continue to nurture and surround us with their love.
God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. God comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.
Inclusive and embracing God,
We thank you for welcoming us as a father into your eternal family,
May we cherish all your children as if they were our own.
See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!
Eternal, and home keeping God,
We thank you for preparing an eternal home,
Where all peoples will find a place of belonging and abundance.
There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?
God our Father,
We thank you for your Father’s heart,
Bless through it all fathers, mothers, parents, children, and creatures of the earth,
Strengthen us all with your fathering love,
Enable us to become the loving, caring persons we are meant to be.
Amen.

Lift every voice and sing
Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us,
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun
Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand.
True to our God,
True to our native land.

Today we remember the 49 lives lost at Pulse Orlando on this day 5 years ago. Join us in worship tomorrow morning to light a candle and say a prayer at our Pulse Memorial table in the sanctuary.

In the sky, as floods receded,
Covenant sign of love made light,
Promised life for all Creation –
See the rainbow shining bright!
Like the colors of the spectrum,
We together all are bound:
Every one is God’s beloved
And in each is God’s light found.

Jesus, God’s own Love Incarnate,
This commandment gave anew,
“As I loved, love one another,
That my light may shine through you.”
In the Church, as in the rainbow,
All our colors shine today,
Teaching all to follow Jesus,
And, with love, to walk the Way.

As we journey on together,
We remember those we’ve lost,
Those who could not make the voyage,
Those whose lives have paid the cost.
Stonewall, Laramie, Orlando…
Change borne on a sea of tears,
Bitter struggle, bitter hatred,
So much pain from so much fear.

Still, O God, your arms enfold us
Like a mother’s, gentle, strong.
No exceptions, no exclusions –
In your love we all belong.
Yet, in every celebration,
Sorrow is not far away,
And the fight is not yet over
For too many on this day.

Through the years of loss and conflict,
We’ve been called to turn our hearts,
And together, be Love’s beacon
When all other light departs.
May we be the light God made us,
Rays of hope in times of pain;
Peace and justice be our promise,
Sunlight shining through the rain.

We are praying for you if you are like Tamar, struggling with infertility, or a miscarriage or if you are like Rachel, counting the women among your family and friends who year by year and month by month get pregnant, while you wait.

We are praying for you if you are like Naomi, and have known the bitter sting of a child's death, or if you are like Joseph and Benjamin, and your Mom has died.

We are praying for you if your relationship with your Mom was marked by trauma, abuse, or abandonment, or she just couldn't parent you the way you needed.

We are praying for you if you've been like Moses' mother and put a child up for adoption, trusting another family to love your child into adulthood. Or if you've been like Pharaoh's daughter, called to love children who are not yours by birth.

We are praying for you if you are watching, or have watched your mother age, and disappear into the long goodbye of dementia.

We are praying for you if you, like Mary, are pregnant for the very first time and waiting breathlessly for the miracle of your first child.

We are praying for you if your children have turned away from you, painfully closing the door on relationship, leaving you holding your broken heart in your hands.

We are praying for you if motherhood is your greatest joy and toughest struggle all rolled into one.

We are praying for you if you are watching your child battle substance abuse, a public legal situation, mental illness, or another situation which you can merely watch unfold.

We are praying for you if you, like so many before you, do not wish to be a mother, are not married, or in so many other ways do not fit into societal norms.

We are praying for you if you see yourself reflected in all, or none of these stories.

This mother's day, wherever and whoever you are, we walk with you. You are loved. You are seen. You are worthy. And may you know the deep love without end of our big, wild, beautiful God who is the very best example of a parent that we know. Amen.
