Costume designer AJ Garcia elevated Orlando theater scene | Obituary

A beautiful tribute for A.J Garcia.
Thank you Matt Palm and Orlando Sentinel.

Costume designer AJ Garcia elevated Orlando theater scene | Obituary A critically acclaimed costume designer, AJ Garcia worked in high-school, college, community and professional theaters across Central Florida -- and last year saw one of his costumes put on display at Walt Disney World. He died Sunday at age 47.

Words cannot express how difficult it is to share this news with you. One of our founding Theater at St. Luke’s leaders, Aj Garcia has passed.
Aj and CJ have been with us from the beginning, helping not only to create a theater, but to create a family. They are St. Lukers in every aspect of what it means to be a St. Luker – through hearts of acceptance, hospitality and community built on love. We know this is a deep loss for our St. Luke’s theater community and the entire theater community of Central Florida. AJ made the world a more beautiful place, not only with his incredible talent, but his passion, his heart, his joy, and his smile. He told stories and made us all look more exquisite and confidant not just as the characters on a stage, but as human beings in life. CJ we are here for you and your families with every step, holding you in love and prayer. And we are here for each of you as we all greive this tragic loss. If you need a listening ear, a hand, someone to yell, cry, and even scream at God to, we will sit with you in whatever way you may need. We consider it a privilege to call all of you family, and when tragedy strikes, a family comes together to love and support one another. We will do just that for CJ and for all of us as God’s love holds AJ and holds all of us together.

Tune in for the final episode of "The Power of One" on Thursday (Oct. 29) at 7:30 p.m. here on our page. Following the episode there will be a community conversation featuring special guest Sister Ann Kendrick, founder of Hope CommUnity Center:

In the early 1970ʼs, “with hearts as wide as the world,” Sisters Cathy Gorman, Gail Grimes, and Ann Kendrick came to Apopka to work with farmworkers and the working poor. These Roman Catholic nuns, members of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, hoped to provide this underserved community with the resources needed to move toward social and economic justice. Sister Ann Kendrick likes to say that for the first couple of years, they were mostly just “hanging out” in the African American community of farmworkers and citrus pickers, getting to know the people and finding out what they really wanted. By working with the community rather than for them, the sisters served as catalysts for social change that came from the people. Over the decades, the ministry partnered with residents and local groups to address social problems such as illiteracy, lack of access to healthcare, and economic injustices. Along the way, they spearheaded the creation of six separate nonprofits, and literally, thousands of lives were changed for the better.
