Pastoral Ministry with Persons with Disabilities

Dedicated to the participation of individuals with disabilities in the life of the Catholic Church at the parish level in the Archdiocese of Newark.

Did you know that only 27% of adults with IDD are in the labor force within the Archdiocese of Newark, either working or unemployed? This means that approximately 73% do not have meaningful employment. Businesses have learned that individuals with IDD are productive and reliable employees. New Jersey has been an Employment First state since 2012. This means that individuals with IDD should be encouraged to seek employment first, before seeking adult day programs, which typically do not help them achieve gainful employment. While someone may say, “no,” if asked if they want a job, they almost always say, “yes” when asked if they want to earn a paycheck. This is a free event, open to the community. #ArchdioceseofNewark #archbergenpassaic #thearchofnj #AutismNJ #autismspeaks #NCPD

Inclusive Family Mass Schedule 2019-2020 Everyone is welcome in the parishes of the Archdiocese of Newark. However, some individuals and families living with intellectual, developmental and/or other
disabilities do not feel comfortable attending their local parish liturgy. Please know that you DO BELONG and ARE WELCOME. Because we know that some people are still not attending their parish liturgy due to this, the Archdiocese of Newark also has Inclusive Family Masses that are particularly adapted for individuals with disabilities, their families and friends. They are shorter, some have no music, but at all of these liturgies, you do not need to worry about any extra noises or moving around. We are just gathered together to celebrate God in our lives and to draw strength from this. But again, everyone is welcome at Inclusive Family Masses as well and people from the larger community also attend. For questions
about directions and particular locations, see schedulehttps://www.rcan.org/sites/default/files/files/IFM%20Sept%202019-June%202020%20OLL%20not%20confirmed(1).pdf

University of Minnesota ICI does great work!

In June, a South Korean delegation visited ICI to learn about person-centered practices, positive behavior support, and self-directed services. These concepts, which emphasize personal autonomy and independence, are still new in South Korea. The delegation, which was composed of members from 15 organizations that serve people with disabilities, wanted to learn more about these concepts so they could implement them at home. https://ici.umn.edu/news/south-korean-delegation

Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms, sharing a letter from my friend Karen Jackson Loving Samantha

A Mother’s Day Letter
If you are a Mom raising a child with autism or special needs, I want you to know that you are doing a great job. It’s hard to recognize that in a society that prizes the children who are exceptionally intelligent, athletic and physically beautiful and often holds the parents of these children up in high esteem-as if they were solely responsible for their abilities and physical attributes.
Our children with disabilities are different, sometimes acknowledged for splinter skills or even amazing and unusual math or musical skills, but usually not…and always… different.
I am the mom to three beautiful children. Two of them are intellectually gifted and one who has autism and lands somewhere on the border of having an Intellectual Disability. My sons receive awards, are successful in many areas of life and have many options open to them for their future. Their sister will need 24/7 support for the rest of her life. We love all three of them and am proud of the young adults they are becoming.
What I desperately want other moms out there to know and understand is that God is not judging your parenting skills…whether your child is academically and athletically successful or needs a lot of support. He doesn't judge what kinds of therapy you’ve been able to provide or what kind of diets or other interventions you have tried. God recognizes that are doing your best. And when it gets hard (and we know it often does) you have a loving God that is there for you. Lean in on Him.
Happy Mother’s Day friends!
