Awesome Ladino-Andalusian "Ocho Kandalikas" ;-) for Hanukkah, performed in Yafo. In and from every culture & land, "The Return" (Dt. 30:1-5, Ezek. 36:18ff) can happen and is happening! BH"S!!! https://youtu.be/nOZRcH0VNEA
Evidence, facts, and rational thought are all good things. And – as we will keep on saying, "Zionism is a good thing." Let "The Return" continue and prosper! We are honored to be part of it! (Hos. 3:4-5)
Congregation Beth El of Manhattan, a Conservative Synagogue of Two-Testament Judaism in Manhattan's Upper East Side since 1993.

This week’s parasha is “VaYishlakh” – “And He Sent Out” – and the Haftarah from the itty-bitty 1-chapter book of Obadiah, we see see spiritual plutonium-strength display of the Deuteronomy 18 standard for the authority of the Scriptures: such specific long-range prophecy so accurate it is almost scary to read it. The prophet predicts when Israel returns from scattering across the world, exactly where in Israel certain populations will settle – abnd it is not the region of our land from which they were kidnapped and exiled! Amazing! Mind-boggling! And – we study WHY God put this content into the bread-crumb trail of the Scriptures. Enjoy!

We also thankfully point anyone wishing to Tithe or Donate to our Donor’s portal at https://www.bethelnyc.org/make-a-donation. Be sure to peruse the newly-revamped website-and DOWNLOAD OUR NEW “APP!!!”– and please do share these resources with others YOU are HOW this synagogue GROWS! :-) Shabbat shalom!
Congregation Beth El of Manhattan, a Conservative Synagogue of Two-Testament Judaism in Manhattan's Upper East Side since 1993.

This week’s parasha is “VaYetzeh” – “And He Went Out” – and we continue to see the soft under-belly of the Patriarchal Era ... the under-theme of limitation and temporality soaking every moment we read about. The sermon this week is “Life’s Two Fake-Outs” – dealing with the ways we distract ourselves from the reality about which God teaches us so clearly: we have this (spiritual) treasure in earthen (clay) vessels.” And why it is this way.

On Yom Sigd 5782, mindful of the high diversity of HaYishuv ("The Return") of our People per Hosea 3:4-5 to our God, Our Messiah, and our National Identity/Homeland ... this 30 minute video on Jewish Diversity was shared with me by a congregant ... and I share it with you because I found it has genuine empathy-creative value. A BRIEF MOMENT NOT SUITABLE: At 2min 5 sec to 2 min 8 sec there is a moment of profanity. I did not think it was preemptory of the entire video's worth: I hope you agree. :-) Hag HaSigd Sameakh! https://player.vimeo.com/video/620157790

We are an "unaffiliated Conservative" Two-Testament Synagogue in New York City's Upper East Side since 1993. See "About Us" at www.bethelnyc.org

Jewish people, along with "People of Calling" not born Jewish, and InterFaith marriages, have come together in Manhattan to observe and celebrate, pray and worship. We embrace historic Scriptural Judaism, inclusive of New Testament faith in Yeshua (Jesus) of Nazareth as the Suffering Messiah. It is in this sense our Judaism is "Messianic."

[Rabbi Bruce writing] If, as it has done in much of Christendom, absence of conflict takes position within one's values as the highest good; and if maximizing safety and minimizing risk are deemed the highest form of leadership – we produce "leaders" addicted to the status quo, who are unable boldly to seize necessary opportunities, or stand up to evil when it rears its head: a faith-sphere filled with George McFlys telling the world, "I've never been very good at confrontations." We get Neville Chamberlains for every generation. This is not isolated to the Faith world: it is noticed in other spheres, as Kiyosaki holds forth here. The Book of Revelation tells us cowards end up in Hell. What message could be clearer than that? "Be only strong, and courageous," God commanded Joshua. Not reckless – but strong, and courageous.

[Rabbi Bruce writing] I was smitten by this idea today via this meme: there are so many people FAKING "having it together" vs. actually HAVING it together ... which does not mean they have tamed all of life into some version of Disneyland. Biblically speaking, being IN a storm AND being at peace and able to access your spiritual resources is the goal (see Matt. 8:26): not mastering the PRETENSE of peace when inside, you are breaking apart (Jer. 6:14). May Heaven teach us all what Paul called, "the secret of being able to abound and to lack: to do all things through Messiah who strengthens us" ––– HAVING ACTUAL peace no matter what swirls about us! Kadima!

"Let your prayers of request be voiced to God together with thanks-givings ..." - Rav Saul of Tarshish, Letter To The Philippians, ca. 65 c.e. ––– I often have thought and think what is written here, and was encouraged to see another voice speaking something other than complaints about virtual gatherings - which tool is, frankly, saving civilization from crumbling due to CV19. I am grateful for my virtual friends, virtual synagogue, virtual events I attend ... all of it. Grateful. :-)

[From Rabbi Bruce] – It was my great pleasure and honor yesterday to see one of the first showings of the 4K-restoration of the 1975 film, "Hester Street." (A benefit of life in and around Manhattan. ;-) The flaws in the original videography were removed (like a visible microphone hanging over the set for a few seconds during an important scene, and the fogginess of some sequences) - and what is left is a true masterpiece: Carol Kane's heart-wrenching performance, the amazing humor injected into an abject environment –and most importantly, the truth that even though the skin of most Jews arriving in American in the late 1800s to early 1900s was chalk white ... Jews were once IMMIGRANTS. Impoverished, barely-surviving, culturally isolated, despised & excluded, non-English-speaking IMMIGRANTS. Jews are too often portrayed in the modern media as "masters of the universe" – and seeing Jews so depleted, so impoverished, so PTSD from their earlier experiences of pogroms having driven them to emigrate ... makes this a film EVERY American 8th-12th grade school teacher should show in their American history class. It would go a LONG way toward dispelling antisemitism based on the "Jews are white colonialists who have all the money and control everything" motivation. Kudos to the Cohen Film Library (no relation of mine) for this great service to cinema and civilization.

A year ago today, we lost a giant. And today is Justice Ginsburg’s first yahrzeit. We use this day to honor the late Justice Ginsburg and recommit ourselves to the causes she bravely and passionately spent her life fighting for. As we embark into the year 5782, how can we each live up to the ideals, the values, and the commitment to justice that Justice Ginsburg embodied?

She used every ounce of strength she had to protect us as women, as Jews, as LGBTQ individuals, as immigrants and refugees, as people of color, as vulnerable minorities, until her very last breath. In this moment, as voting rights are being frayed, as reproductive rights are under threat, and economic and racial inequities persist – we must honor her by fighting. Fighting for our country, fighting for our rights, and advocating for the protection of the freedoms of our society’s most vulnerable with the same urgency, passion and perseverance with which she fought for all of us.

RBG was our ultimate hero: a true Zioness queen. We will forever be inspired by and indebted to her. She never strayed from her commitment to justice, equality, and above all, the United States Constitution. She would want us to fight, and fight we shall do. Thank you for everything, RBG.

This “Yom Kippur,” may there be for you “a totally good inscription” in God’s “book” (Malachi 3:16)

"Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord gave attention and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him regarding those who revere the Lord, and who esteem His Name."

Our Story-In-Brief

A Conservative Synagogue of Two Testament Judaism in Manhattan since 1993. People born Jewish, Jewish-by-Choice, and InterFaith all come together in the heart of Manhattan to observe and celebrate, pray and worship. We believe “This is eternal life: to know the One True God, and Yeshua The Messiah whom He has sent.” (Yochanon 17:3) We embrace historically accurate Scriptural Judaism, inclusive of sound New Testament faith. It is in this sense our Judaism is "Messianic." We believe healthy faith is both spiritually vibrant and academically accurate. All are invited to come and experience Two-Testament Judaism with us, in the capital of the Jewish world outside Israel. Shalom.
