Cantor Schwartz Sings Shir Hadash ("A New Song")

The psalmist's words ring out from ancient times, telling us to sing a new song. This is one of the reasons we create new settings of familiar texts: It enables us to hear the prayer in a new way, to consider different aspects of it. The psalm goes on to command not just the people of Israel, but kol ha'aretz - the whole world and all its creations - to join in singing. At PAS, we often work with Israeli musicians who have a cosmopolitan musical life, and Ofer Bashan, the composer of this setting, has travelled the world and lived for several years in Nigeria. Worship traditions from around the world are present in this piece. We hope that you join in a new song and wish you a Shabbat shalom. Cantor Schwartz Sings R'tze Vimnuhoseinu (“Embrace Our Rest”)

This prayer from the Shabbat Amidah expresses our souls’ desire for both kinds of peace described by Rabbi Nahman of Bratzlav: the kind within oneself, which arises from a sense of awe and humility, and the universal kind that comes from prayer. Traditional cantorial singing at its core is a soulful style, and we encourage you to close your eyes and imagine the peace going into your soul. Wishing you a peaceful Shabbat. Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove: Rebel Without a Cause - October 16, 2021

How do you show that you are a Jew? Rabbi Cosgrove reminds us that we are heirs to Abraham, the iconoclast founder of our people. We must be true to that heritage and proudly assert our Jewish identity.

Cantor Schwartz Sings Mi Shebeirach

Through the generations, we have blessed our children. This week, Parashat Lekh L’kha particularly reminds us not just to give a blessing, but to be a blessing. This song by Zina Goldrich and Marcy Heisler, commissioned by PAS especially for the moment at which the clergy bless the Bnei Mitzvah, distills the tender moment when the rabbi and cantor bless the child. When the blessing is for a clergy member’s kid, the smile is perhaps just a little bit wider.

60 Seconds of Torah: Lekh L’kha and Restraint

Abraham is the perfect embodiment of the truism, “Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.” Rabbi Cosgrove discusses what Abraham can teach us about restraint.

Cantor Schwartz sings "Torah is Love"

This week, we started reading a new cycle of the Torah. The renewal and expansion of our tradition, with the community and Torah at its center, continues strong at PAS. It is expressed in this musical setting commissioned from composer Elliot Weiss for the opening of our Lifelong Learning Center four years ago this week. We look forward to being able to dance with you again in person soon. In the meantime, wishing you a Shabbat shalom!

Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove: Purple Rain - October 4, 2021

Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove: After the Fast - September 18, 2021

Where do we go from Yom Kippur? Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove reminds us that resetting our moral compass is not a “one-and-done” task, but a lifelong challenge that we meet by a day-after-day commitment toward becoming our aspirational selves.

Swing Your Way Through Kaddish Shalem

In a season full of excitement and melody, Rosenblatt’s setting of Kaddish is probably the most recognizable of all the High Holiday music. In this version, the energy is high as members of the MET Brass and the PAS band loosen their ties and offer Kaddish as you’ve never heard it before!
