Chassida Shmella

Chassida Shmella is the organization of the Ethiopian Jewish Community of North America. Chassida Shmella is a young and dynamic non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded by members of the Ethiopian Israeli community living in North America.

We began in late 2004 when we saw the need to share our rich history and religious customs with our fellow Jews and non-Jews alike in North America who did not know much about us. We also saw the great need to form an organization to help Ethiopian Jews maintain their ties to Israel and for us to advocate for our community in Israel and in North America. Our goal is to preserve the rich 3,000 year

True pride of a Jewish people!

Exactly today 30 years ago: One of the most secretive and powerful, proud and exciting operation and to bring Ethiopian Jews back home.

Operation ‘Shlomo’ truly represented what Zionism is, and demonstrated the purpose of the State of Israel: providing a shelter to Jews from all around the world who suffered and were persecuted merely for bearing the Jewish religion”, said the Air force commander at the time, Maj. Gen. Avihu Ben-Nun. “It was a great operation on a global scale: never before, did so few pilots transport such a great number of people in such a short time".
On May 24 and 25, 1991, a total of 34 El Al jumbo jets and Hercules C-130s - seats removed to accommodate the maximum number of Ethiopian Jewish - began non-stop flights
Operation Solomon transported over 14,325 Ethiopian Jews (almost the entire Jewish Ethiopian Jewish community) to Israel in 36 hours on 34 Israeli planes. In order to accommodate as many people as possible, airplanes were stripped of their seats and up to 1,200 passengers were boarded on a single plane.
The operation set a world record for single-flight passenger load on May 24, 1991 when an El Al 747 carried 1,122 passengers to Israel (1,087 passengers were registered, but dozens of children hid in their mothers' robes).
The result of very hard work by the State of Israel and all Jewish communities around the world. Such results deserve a lot of pride from the American Jewish community and Jews around the world and the State of Israel! Even non-Jewish communities helped, and US President George H. W. Bush supported and helped ensure that the operation ended successfully.!
Without the powerful support and help of American Jews! And Jews around the world, the Government of America and a few of the governments from countries around the world, all these operations like Operation Moses and Operation Solomon would not have come true! Of course in the State of Israel all the expert people who work behind the scenes like Mossad for intelligence and special positions as well💙🤍🇮🇱❤️🇺🇸! 🇮🇱🤍💙❤️🇺🇸

A HAPPY YOM YERUSHALYIM FROM CHASSIDA SHMELLA ETHIOPIAN ISRAELI JEWISH COMMUNITY;
A happyYom Yerushlayem!
Today it is also a Memorial Day for Ethiopian Jews. Many died in Sudan on the long way to reach the promised land, Israel,
But before the Jews of Ethiopia immigrated to Israel we had one dream: to return to Yerushalayim, to Jerusalem. One HUGE dream. Often, as they scanned the skies facing toward Jerusalem they would be jealous of the storks on their migratory route toward Jerusalem, and wish that they, like the storks, could fly ‘home!’ One special word in the Amharic vocabulary is ‘shmella,’ the stork, which had this special ability- to fly where it wanted to be.

Yom Yerushalayim, Jerusalem Day, an important holiday for all Jews and particularly because it is also a Memorial Day for Ethiopian Jews. Many died in Sudan on the long way to reach the promised land, Israel, during Operation Moses, Operation Solomon and the smaller, lesser known times of secret immigration. In Jerusalem, a large artistic and moving Memorial site exists, a memory to those who died, and a ceremony is held annually.
Approximately 4,000-5,000 members of the community perished on the way to promise land!

The operation would not have been successful without our brave Ethiopian Jewish community! And wonderful leaders from the Jewish community around the world and especially from the leadership of American Jews and the Israeli government and Israeli Mossad.

Chassida Shmella wishing you all a Chag Kasher V’Sameach and a Happy Passover!

Wishing you a happy and healthy Passover!

This weekend, Jews all over the world will fulfill this obligation by participating in the Passover Seder. For some, it will mean finally joining with loved ones in person, after a year of isolation caused by the pandemic. For many others, it may still mean coming together virtually. But however one celebrates this year, the Seder will conclude with the same heartfelt prayer, which expresses a yearning of peace, redemption, and hope:

“L'Shana Haba'ah B'Yerushalayim” (“Next Year in Jerusalem”)

This morning, over 600 Jewish organizations, synagogues, and congregations signed this full-page ad in The New York Times: “We say unequivocally: Black Lives Matter.”

The Black Lives Matter movement is the current day Civil Rights movement in this country, and it is our best chance at equity and justice. By supporting this movement, we can build a country that fulfills the promise of freedom, unity, and safety for all of us, no exceptions.

We are proud to support this movement — and we know that there have always been Black Jews in movements for Black liberation and in Jewish communities. Our Jewish community must continue to rise up for Black lives, including Black Jews, with all of our spiritual, political and intellectual resources.

John Lewis Tribute

Thank you John Lewis!🙏🏽
John Lewis’ legacy of good trouble: Building bridges,
US Congressman John Lewis spent his extraordinary life battling injustice on the front lines as he marched, organized, and led during the civil rights movement and continued in. US Congressman John Lewis was one of the original 13 Freedom Riders, the chairman of the Voter Education Project and he became the respected conscience of Congress. He put himself on the line to fight for civil, gay, and transgender rights.
And in 2011 received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Grateful for the opportunity to carry on his legacy of activism.
In his honor and memory we all need to continue in the way of John Lewis's Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, Building bridges,!🦋🗽🕊

STAND WITH ETHIOPIAN IN ISRAEL!

Please sign this petition to show your support of the Ethiopian Israeli.
li community in our mutual fight against racism, discrimination and inequality.

NOW is the time to stand with the Ethiopian Jewish community!

The police and justice system in Israel must be held accountable for Solomon’s death. Justice must be served. We ask that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan, Justice Minister Amir Ohana and President Reuven Rivlin put this on top of their agendas, and ensure that an independent inquiry – not an internal police investigation - is held immediately.
