Hello all! Here's a link to a photo montage I had made after the memorial tribute we had years ago to Rabbi Kret z"l (I made it quickly as a way to leave the pictures with former members when I visited them in Jerusalem). Brings back lots of warm, wonderful memories. (The song in the background by Elie Deutsch is beautiful too, btw.)

Learned today about the passing from corona virus of this sweet man who learned Yiddish while volunteering for Hatzalah. He appeared in a number of fund raising videos for Jewish charities dealing with cancer patients. I didn't know that he was also a pastor in a church in Harlem not far from the Old Broadway Synagogue. May Rev. Harrell's memory be for a blessing.

Chanukah Appeal for the Old Broadway Synagogue

December 2019
Kislev 5780

Dear Friends,

I hope this letter finds you and your families well.

During these troubled times, Chanukah’s messages – faith in the face of adversity, determination of the spirit, and recommitment to holiness and community – are especially meaningful. May the spiritual light of Chanukah illuminate not only the eight days of the holiday, but also shine brightly throughout the rest of the year.

As we approach the end of the 2019, I am writing to thank you for your generous support of the Old Broadway Synagogue this past year. Thanks to your help, we have continued to be a warm and welcoming makom Torah for Jews in Harlem, Morningside Heights and the Upper West Side.

I am pleased to report that we have had a good year. We have beautiful davening every Shabbos, Sunday morning and on the yamim tovim. Rafi, our baal keriah, gives an excellent devar torah each Shabbos morning during the service. Every week after davening, we have a sit-down kiddush. Every Shabbos afternoon, Shimon-Yaakov Laxer leads an outstanding Gemara chaburah (study group). We started with Baba Metzia and the responsibilities of the person who finds a lost object and now we are learning Sanhedrin and the various uses of the Jewish court. Also, one Sunday a month after Shacharis, Rabbi Avi Heller gives a well-attended shiur. The Women’s Rosh Chodesh group has been meeting monthly under the able leadership of Rhonda Taylor and Laura Radensky. At each session, the participants explore a different aspect of Judaism or Jewish approaches to social issues. All of these learning events are excellent and thought-provoking. I urge you to try one or all of them if you are not attending already.

We have also been having communal dinners following davening one Friday each month. These have proven to be wonderful opportunities to socialize, hear divrei torah and especially, sing. We look forward to continuing this new tradition.

Our children’s group, enthusiastically led by Shoshana Blum, continues to thrive.

Thanks to Dale Brown’s ongoing efforts, the garden in the back courtyard has grown into panoply of color. It has been a delightful distraction to step outside (especially when the weather is warmer) and take in the beautiful plantings. The garden now includes a selection of native perennials donated by our former Financial Secretary, Orrin Tilevitz. Dale has prepared the garden for the winter, and we look forward to its rebirth in the spring.

Since Chanukah commemorates the restoration and re-dedication of the Temple, here are some updates about our own mikdash ma’at – our shul. Our project to reinforce the first floor and the staircase to the second floor has been delayed by a backlog at the engineer’s office. We have been using the time to assemble funds so that we will be able to deal with whatever surprises may arise once we begin the work. Meanwhile, we addressed a number of smaller issues. Russell Oren graciously refitted all of our light fixtures on the second floor to accommodate LED bulbs, so now the lighting in the building is much brighter. Moreover, Rabbi Yonah and Rebbetzin Karen Blum donated several bookcases which we are using for our library.

Like other synagogues across the United States, we have ramped up our security procedures following the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh in October, 2018. After consulting with the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York and the Community Affairs officers of the 26th Police Precinct around the corner, we have installed new coach lights on the facade of the building as well as closed circuit cameras and monitors.

As we complete 2019, we look forward to 2020 as a year, God willing, of ongoing growth and success. We ask you to remember us generously in your year-end giving. You can contribute via PayPal at bit.ly/OldBroadway or email us at [email protected]. You may also pay by check, payable to the Old Broadway Synagogue and sent to the shul at 15 Old Broadway, New York, NY 10027. Your help makes it possible for us to maintain our historic synagogue, offer our services and programming, and be a beacon of warmth and yiddishkeyt in Upper Manhattan. We thank you in advance for your support.

Warm wishes for a freylikhn Chanukah!

About the Old Broadway Synagogue

The Old Broadway Synagogue is a traditional, warm, welcoming, diverse Orthodox congregation in the Manhattanville section of West Harlem. We were founded in 1911 and have been open for Shabbos and holiday services ever since (we would like to get back into the daily minyan business as well but that will come). We have services on Friday nights at 7:30pm or candle-lighting (whichever is earlier), 9:15am on Shabbos morning and an hour and twenty minutes before the end Shabbos on Saturday afternoons. We also have Shacharis and a breakfast (and sometimes a shiur) every Sunday morning. For more information, please email Paul Radensky at [email protected]. We hope to meet you!
