Serving Midland County, Texas
The Salvation Army began in Midland, TX as a service unit of the Divisional Headquarters in 1949. In June, 1956, Lt. and Mrs. Edward Laity, rented a building on Weatherford Street and opened the Midland Corps. In 1959 the Army moved to 228 S. Lorraine Street where the Marathon Oil building was later located. In 1970, the Kimball Company, a wholesale grocery firm, donated its warehouse at 300 South Baird Street to The Salvation Army. This building was renovated to provide not only a corps building, but an emergency lodge, thrift store and executive offices. In 1979, a very successful campaign was conducted and a new building was built at 3500 Park Lane for The Salvation Army Corps/Community Center, which is our present Corps facility.
The Salvation Army, founded in 1865, is an international religious and charitable movement organized and operated on a quasi-military pattern and is a branch of the Christian Church. Its membership includes officers (clergy), soldiers/adherents (laity), members of varied activity groups and volunteers who serve as advisors, associates, and committed participants in its service functions. The motivation of the organization is love of God and a practical concern for the needs of humanity. This is expressed by a spiritual ministry, the purposes of which are to preach the Gospel, disseminate Christian truths, supply basic human necessities, provide personal counseling and undertake the spiritual and moral regeneration and physical rehabilitation of all persons in need who come within its sphere of influence regardless of race, color, creed, sex or age.

In 1917, The Salvation Army began a mission to provide spiritual and emotional support for U.S. soldiers fighting in France during World War I. Nearly 250 volunteers traveled overseas and set up small huts near the front lines where they could give soldiers clothes, supplies and, of course, fried confectionary. The tradition that started as a way to inspire and thank WWI soldiers continues on June 5, so enjoy this historical footage of those on the frontlines. #DonutDay
Thank you! Midland County Emergency Management for your wonderful donation of Hand Sanitizer, Pillows and Blankets. We appreciate your generosity and selflessness during these times. Thank you!!!

On This Day In History: One of the darkest days in The Salvation Army’s history occurred 106 years ago this month. In May 1914, Salvationists around the globe were travelling to the third Salvation Army International Congress in London, England. A great time for celebration, many Canadian Salvationists set off on a voyage aboard the passenger ship, the Empress of Ireland. Sadly, with 1,012 passengers carrying approximately 150 Salvationists (29 Staff Band members), the Empress sank. Only 465 survived, and among those were about 26 Salvationists. It remains the largest peacetime marine disaster in Canadian history. More on this story: tsatx.org/SQa2V8

On This Day In History: In May of 1882, the former London Orphan Asylum was opened as The Salvation Army Clapton Congress Hall. After renovations, the massive hall could seat more than 4,500 people! The Salvation Army called it their "National Barracks" as the Army used its wings as training barracks for 300 male and female cadets with classrooms on the ground floor, workrooms below, and bedrooms above. The Clapton Congress Hall was used by The Salvation Army for 87 years until 1970 when a new citadel was built on Lower Clapton Road.
