Hello my name is Rudy Underwood and I have been asked to share my testimony about my baptism and conversion into the Church. (Sorry in advance as it is lengthy)

I was raised as a Baptist from an early age and was always taught to live by some simple rules: 1) Always Love the Lord, 2) Family is the most important thing no matter what, 3) Always do what you believe to be right. Pretty simple rules that I have tried to follow. I have always been a God fearing person, and felt that I must serve Heavenly Father as best as I could in any situation.

When I decided to marry my wife I talked with the Bishop and it was explained to me that if my wife and I weren't married in the temple we could not get into the celestial kingdom. This worried me since my wife is a loving women and very patient and I wanted her to have the best in life. She assured me that she wanted to marry me even though I was not a member and she said she would not push her faith on me no matter what and I could take all the time in the world to decide to become a member or not. (I like to think she knew I would join so that is why she did not pressure me.)

There were several hurdles that were holding me back. The most important one was my family, being a Baptist for many years and having helped found a Baptist Church in my younger years left me feeling conflicted. I had already been baptized and made a public profession to follow Christ and I felt that if I got baptized again then what would that mean about all those years of following Christ's teachings??? I knew i was going to Heaven I was living a righteous life and following his commandments as best as humanly possible. I often joked with the missionaries i was fine with just going to Heaven even if it was the lesser degree of Heaven.

I still continued to pray and ask if i should join the Church over the years. I struggled with how my mother and father were going to react if I decided to become a member (rule #2). I got their blessing for my marriage to my wife in the LDS Church, but felt this next step was so much more important as I would be changing from their faith to the LDS faith. I spoke to them and was reassured that no matter what my choice me and my family would be welcome into their homes and they just wanted me to be happy.

It was almost 13 years of attending Church with my wife and family before I finally got the answer to my prayer to join the Church. I kept worrying because I have heard others testify that the power of the Holy Spirit was so overwhelming and I was not getting that feeling so perhaps I was not praying correctly or asking the right questions. I finally had to ask Heavenly Father to assure me that the Church as true and asked him to have the Holy Ghost touch my heart and stay with me for as long as possible to help me believe that this was the right choice. I prayed on my knees fervently and as soon as I finished my prayer, I continued listening quietly waiting for a response only a brief moment later and I could feel the Holy Ghost touching my soul with a feeling that was not overwhelming but one that was a gentle feeling of love and hope. I knew that I was loved by Heavenly Father and this is what he wanted me to do with my life. The spirit remained with me for several hours. I called my wife and told her of my prayer and the answer and told her it was time. I then called the missionaries and told them I was ready to move forward and become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

It was difficult because I was only allowed a small group of people to attend my baptism, and I have made many friends while attending Church as a non-member and serving as a Cubmaster for our young Scouts over the years and I wanted to share this moment with everyone.

I was very blessed to not only get to be baptized but confirmed that same day of the baptism. I even got my son to confer the Priesthood to me and help serve sacrament at his house to our families. (This was not only a very powerful spiritual experience but highly emotional for me) I can now baptize my daughter when she comes of age which is another powerful and emotional experience I can't wait to experience.

I can not express enough or put into words how powerful the feeling is that I get when I bless and pass the sacrament in our house, knowing that we can still renew our covenants with the Lord even though we are not attending Church services to partake of the sacrament. The Lord has blessed not only me but my family with my choice to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints every since that day. I have gotten my limited use temple recommend and am just waiting for the temple to open so I can go and experience the fullness of joy and love that awaits me and my family inside that sacred temple.

I would just like to end my testimony by saying I know the Church is true and it is possible to return back to live with Heavenly Father if we choose to live righteously and follow the commandments given to us. I am thankful for our living prophet Russel M. Nelson who leads us through these latter days filled with troublesome times by giving us messages of hope and love for all mankind. I leave this message with you all in the name of Jesus Christ Amen.
Joel’s Prophesy
The Apostle Peter, quoting the Old Testament prophet Joel (Joel 2: 28-31), prophesied of the last days before the Lord’s Second Coming of the young men and women you see on this page:
Acts 2: 17-18:
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

No doubt, these young men and women, and thousands more like them serving around the world, are fulfilling Joel’s prophesy!
Isaiah’s Prophecy
Correctly recognizing the fulfillment of ancient prophecy will strengthen our faith in God, especially in troubling times, such as now; for we see and are sure the God knows all, and thus our faith in Him is strengthened. However, sometimes the meaning of a prophecy is not apparent, we may not understand what the prophet foresaw; but when we do see the fulfillment, it is breathtaking! Here is an example:
Isaiah 29: 4, 11,12
Verse 4:
And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.
Verses 11-12:
And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:

And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.

Note: This entire chapter of Isaiah 29 is quoted by Nephi, an ancient American prophet who possessed the Brass Plates, which contained the records of the prophets from the creation down to the time of Jeremiah, which plates they brought with them from Jerusalem. Slightly different from the current Bible, Isaiah’s prophecy, as recorded in 2 Nephi, chapter 27, of the Book of Mormon, is much easier to understand. The meaning of Isaiah’s prophecy was clearly understood by the ancient Nephite prophets who refer to it repeatedly.
The fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy occurred in February 1828. Joseph Smith had received the gold plates (an abridgement of the sacred record of descendants of Joseph who were brought to the Western Hemisphere about 600 BC). These plates had been buried in a stone box for over 1,400 years and were delivered to Joseph Smith “out of the ground” by the angel Moroni, the previous September. Joseph, who had little formal education (“not learned”) had commenced the monumental task of translating the plates written in revised Egyptian into English (see Pearl of Great Price - Joseph Smith History).
Joseph Smith History, verses 62 thru 65:
... I commenced copying the characters off the plates. I copied a considerable number of them, and by means of the Urim and Thummim I translated some of them, which I did between the time I arrived at the house of my wife’s father, in the month of December, and the February following.
Sometime in this month of February, the aforementioned Mr. Martin Harris came to our place, got the characters which I had drawn off the plates, and started with them to the city of New York. For what took place relative to him and the characters, I refer to his own account of the circumstances, as he related them to me after his return, which was as follows:

“I went to the city of New York, and presented the characters which had been translated, with the translation thereof, to Professor Charles Anthon, a gentleman celebrated for his literary attainments. Professor Anthon stated that the translation was correct, more so than any he had before seen translated from the Egyptian. I then showed him those which were not yet translated, and he said that they were Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac, and Arabic; and he said they were true characters. He gave me a certificate, certifying to the people of Palmyra that they were true characters, and that the translation of such of them as had been translated was also correct. I took the certificate and put it into my pocket, and was just leaving the house, when Mr. Anthon called me back, and asked me how the young man found out that there were gold plates in the place where he found them. I answered that an angel of God had revealed it unto him.
“He then said to me, ‘Let me see that certificate.’ I accordingly took it out of my pocket and gave it to him, when he took it and tore it to pieces, saying that there was no such thing now as ministering of angels, and that if I would bring the plates to him he would translate them. I informed him that part of the plates were sealed, and that I was forbidden to bring them. He replied, ‘I cannot read a sealed book.’ I left him and went to Dr. Mitchell, who sanctioned what Professor Anthon had said respecting both the characters and the translation.”

Isaiah’s Prophecy was Fulfilled!
Isaiah’s prophecy, written around 700 BC, was actually a quote of a conversation he foresaw that took place over 2,500 years later in February 1828 between Martin Harris and Professor Charles Anthon (“the learned”)! Joseph Smith, who had little formal schooling, was “not learned”, yet he translated the ancient plates by the gift and power of God. This reminds me of yet another prophecy by Paul the Apostle, found in 1 Corinthians, verses 25 thru 28:
Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

That no flesh should glory in his presence.

If you want to know for yourself if the Book of Mormon is of God, and to know of the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecies, and many other prophecies, read the Book of Mormon. Doing so will strengthen your faith in God, and your increased faith will strengthen you. I have done so, many times. I know that God lives, and that all things will come to past just as prophesied by ancient and modern prophets.
