Pastor Appreciation Day 10/25/2020

Open Letter Family Cathedral

When 2020 began this year, no one could have predicted such a moment in time. From a worldwide pandemic, to historical hurricanes, fires, unemployment, so many businesses shutting down, and to top it off- a toilet paper shortage 🙂. In all seriousness, I truly believe that in the midst of it all, churches and our Pastors are under attack unlike we have seen in many years. We have seen it in our Pastors, their families as well as many Pastors and across the nation and the world.

The Bible says to pray for our leaders and there has never been a more urgent time to do so- urgently. So, while this is an open letter for Pastor Appreciation Day to Pastors Harry Sewell and Debbie Williams Sewell , it is also a call for daily and consistent prayer and support for them and church leaders- Prayers for Blessings, Courage, Strength, Clarity, Protection, Wisdom, Knowledge, Encouragement, Healing, Discernment and Favor- They need it more than ever before.

When David Crabb Davidson and I first attended Family Cathedral in 2001, we quickly found a friendly, caring, loving church that strived for relationships and grace. The biggest thing that impressed me was not only did Pastor and Debbie know their congregation by name, but knew the names of their kids and was invested. It is really true that people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

It is said that great leaders must communicate the vision clearly, creatively, and continually. However, the vision doesn’t come alive until the leader models it.” David and I have grown to love FCOP and Pastors Harry and Debbie and their tireless hours that they invest in the lives of others. You guys truly model the vision of relationships, love and of grace. You lift others up, you teach and model relationships and leadership and you are confident enough to invest in others so they may grow in leadership also.

It is a blessing to serve under a pastor with such a servant’s heart who teaches us about kindness, perseverance and especially grace. I love your involvement with people- in the church and in our community- and know how hard you have worked for the respect and favor that you have earned inside and outside these walls. Thank you for being genuine and for being, well, You. Even in this specific and strange moment of time of uncertainty, turmoil, personal struggles and change, you continue to lead and love with the grace and perseverance that you have taught and shown us.

We all have our favorite “Sewellisms” ….“Who Are You Going to Grow Old With”; “The best is yet to come”; Let it be; Let it go; Ever thing is going to all right, the Thinderella story….but I think that most of our favorite one is the one that I want to quote back to Pastor and Debbie and it goes like this…

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit-
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
For life is strange with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many turned about- When he might have won had he stuck it out.
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit –
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.
Never, Never Quit. Never, Never Quit.

Thank you Pastor and Debbie for not quitting, for setting a tone of relationships, love and much grace and for being the strong leaders that you are. We love and appreciate you and thank you for reminding us daily to work on relationships, show love, give honor where’s honors due, persevere, respect all, model God’s grace and to Never, Never Quit- and we know that the best IS yet to come.

“Then [in the final time] I will give you [spiritual] shepherds after My own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and [true] understanding. Jeremiah 3:15 AMP
I'm watching the Weekly Kid's Service. It is so good, I love the Bible Story of the '3 dudes that was thrown in the fire'. Good stuff! Thanks Josh Denman&Shelby Brown Denman, what a great ministry!
Want to give a big shout out and thank you to Pastor Josh and Shelby Denman who created and put up the beautiful incredible backgrounds for our photo opps for Easter, Mother's Day, and the Ladies Tea! Great job and your talents and gifts are greatly appreciated!

[07/01/21]   This is so good for your family, a business team and especially for us as Brothers and Sisters in God's family- !!! Next fall when you see geese heading south for the winter... flying along in V formation...you might consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way:
As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in V formation the whole flock adds at least 71% greater flying range, than if each bird flew on its own.
People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.
When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone... and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are headed the same way we are.
When the head goose gets tired it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point. It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs...with people or with geese flying south.
Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. What do we say when we honk from behind?
Finally...and this is important...when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunshots, and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies, and only then do they launch out on their own, or with another formation to catch up with their group.
If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other like that.Carrie Wheat Cade Smith Tammy Morgan
