Our Jungle Life - Jacob & Katie DeValve

We are church planters working in Papua New Guinea with Ethnos 360. Would you like to join us?

The Beginnings: Both Jacob and I have felt for a few years now that God has very clearly called us to overseas mission work. We have seen God work in amazing ways to reaffirm this call on our lives, and after much research on what type of mission work we would pursue, we settled on an organization called Ethnos 360...formerly known as New Tribes Mission. Ethnos 360 works to plant churches in unreached tribal communities. There are currently 6,500 people groups around the world, 2,500 whose languages are untranslated and are therefore with the word of God. We are so excited to be a part of a mission that works in this capacity, and we know that God has done amazing things through Ethnos 360. Where we are now: We are home in Connecticut raising support to head overseas to Papua New Guinea in January, 2020. Our Hope… Our hope in creating this page is that you would begin to pray for us. We have become keenly aware of our need for prayer support as we begin to make some large life decisions. We know that God has called us to this, and now we need a team of prayerful supporters to help us reach the world. If you are interested in joining our team, both prayerfully or financially, please consider visiting our website at: http://ourjunglelife.com/pgs/donate.html , or emailing us ([email protected] or [email protected]). We know that together, we can begin a relationship where we are all invested in God’s heart for reaching the world. Two is better than one, according to God’s word, so we hope and pray you would consider joining us in this journey as we pursue becoming full time missionaries.

Mission: Ethnos 360 works in the tribal culture and language: “These tribes’ cultures and languages have isolated them from the Gospel. Missionaries must learn their language and understand their culture in order to clearly present the Gospel and effectively plant a church.” Ethnos 360 presents foundational Bible teaching: “Unreached people groups have no concept of the God of the Bible. So Bible teaching begins at the same place God began with His chosen people: at the beginning. Chronological Bible teaching presents a foundation for understanding Jesus’ death and resurrection.” Ethnos 360 Establishes Mature Churches: “Following the pattern seen in Acts as God’s people carried out the Great Commission, missionaries seek to establish mature churches that can take their rightful place as agents of change in their own communities and partners in the Great Commission.”

NTM Papua New Guinea

When New Tribes Mission PNG has all the staff that it needs in each department: business, IT, aviation, medical, maintenance, education . . . we are able to support the work of over 81 church planting families around the country. Support workers make it easier for church planters to stay focused on their primary goal– reaching the tribal people in their location with the truth of the Gospel in their heart language and discipling them until a mature church is established. When there is a gap in one or more areas, making sure those church planters are adequately supported is harder to do.

We are looking at some significant gaps in our teaching staff for the 2020-2021 school year. When there aren’t enough teachers, Numonohi Christian Academy has to limit the services (grades or courses) that are offered. Parents who work in support ministries then bear a greater burden in educating their children, which creates a ripple effect that affects church planters’ ability to focus purely on the task at hand.

For the 2020-2021 school year, we have needs in just about every area, but our CRITICAL needs include several elementary school teachers, a high school science teacher and a high school English teacher. One hundred and sixty-five students are served at NCA. If you have teaching or administrative skills, you could join New Tribes Mission PNG for as little as one year and contribute to something that lasts forever.

[11/04/19]   Did Jesus Die Five Years Ago?

The following is a story from Ron Yearwood, New Tribes church planter in Africa among an unreached people group -

Seni Camara was my cultural informant. He was like my village dad. Whenever I needed advice on what to know or do culturally, I went to him. When I prepared my lessons for the chronological teaching, I told it to Seni first and he gave me the words to say so that it could come out sounding like a native Tanda speaker. All the way through, Seni kept saying, “Wow, this message is so true.” As I continued teaching about the promised redeemer, Seni would ask,

“Who is that Redeemer? Is it Muhammad?”

I would respond, “Let’s just wait and see.” After the lesson on Nicodemus and being born again, Seni said,

“I believe this message! Ron, how long ago did Jesus die? Was it about 5 years ago?”

This startled me, so I asked, “Seni why did you say 5 years?” He replied, “Well you came to our village about 4 years ago, so I assume that it was 5 years.”

I said, “Seni…it was about 2000 years ago.”

He looked at me in shock. His mouth fell open; his eyes welled up with tears, and overflowing with emotion, he said, “2000 years! 2000 years! All my parents and ancestors have died and gone and you all have only just come? Ron, What took you all so long! You waited till we held Islam and it is very difficult for us to change. Why did it take you so long?”

I did not have an answer for Seni.

Seni Camara recently crossed the border into Guinea Bissau to help take the gospel to his birth village with us. A few years ago as we headed home on furlough Seni came to give his farewell and appealed to us to take a message to our churches:

“Please tell your people that my people have not rejected the Gospel. They have not rejected it.” Shaking his head he said, “They have just never heard it. They have never heard it.”

On Giving Tuesday, a BIG Thank You!

On Giving Tuesday, we just wanted to send out a BIG thank you to all of those who have sacrificed to have a hand in seeing God's word reach those who have never heard by helping send us out! We are just blown away at the way the body of Christ works to make things happen for the kingdom of God. We get a front row seat to see how God motivates and convicts people to give of their time, money, prayers, gifts, etc. to have a hand in reaching the world, and it is THE COOLEST!
"The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ....This makes for harmony among the members so that all the members care for each other. If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. All of you together are Christ's body, and each of you is a part of it." 1 Corinthians 12:12, 25-27

eepurl.com I'm sure you have all seen posts or news about Giving Tuesday. I honestly didn't know anything about it until this year. When I heard about it, I felt like it would be the perfect opportunity to THANK everyone who has had a hand in giving of their various resources to help us on our journey to get t...

Risk Your Kids for the Kingdom? On Taking Children to Unreached Peoples

I am only sharing this because we have been asked many times if we are bringing our children with us to the jungle, or aren't we so worried about the danger out there?
Those are, in no way, unreasonable questions. In fact, they are questions I wrestle with all the time (the danger one).

This article is not meant as a condemnation of people who are raising children stateside. There are many, many warrior parents teaching their children how to stand up for their faith in a hostile environment stateside. So please don't read this as "just because I am not going to be a missionary means my kids aren't being raised to stand up for their faith." NOT AT ALL.

This article is specifically addressing the decision of parents who ARE taking their kids into overseas ministry contexts. It is explaining some of the rationale behind why we made this hard choice and are okay with it.

Just like any article, I don't agree 100% with everything Piper writes, but here are some of my favorite lines from the article:

"Perhaps we lose too many of our children because they weren’t trained as soldiers. Maybe we trained them in comfort and security, and now they won’t leave it."

"Come, my precious children, learn from mommy and daddy what it means to live with joy in the service of the King."

"The truth is that there are worse risks for our children than death. This is simple Bible-reality. Not easy. Just simple. It is not complex or hard to grasp. There are things vastly worse than death. Wasting your life is worse than losing it."

"But we have more reason to risk. We have a promise: If God is for us, no one can be successfully against us (Romans 8:31). If they take our lives, our spouses, and our children, they cannot succeed. In all these things, we are more than conquerors. How better can we show our children this truth than to take them with us to the nations?"

desiringgod.org Parents should protect their children from danger at any cost. But the greatest threat isn’t against their physical safety but their eternal souls.
