From Kurt, our Lay Pastoral Leader:
Sometimes the presence of the Holy Spirit is more evident than other times. I mean, the Holy Spirit is always with us, but sometimes you can feel the presence of something special, of a more sacred way, if you will. Yesterday at Christ Church was one of those days.

It started with the presence of our priest. Yesterday that was Gail Epes. Her presence--never mind the Holy Spirit--is calming, spiritual, strong. When Gail celebrates you feel as if Jesus just simply tapped her harder than the rest of us and said to her 'go, and make disciples of all...' for that is surely what she does when she celebrates with us. When she looks us in the eye, calls us by name and says 'George, this is the body of Christ,' you know He is there, you feel the special nourishment that only comes from the Eucharist.

It included the music. The Ecumenical Choir yesterday was glorious. With blended voices, under the direction of the wonderful Betty Hutchison, 'Seek and You Shall Find' made us all stop and listen. We listened to the music. And we listened to what Christ Church exists for: the presence of Jesus in every heart and mind and body of every person in the room. The music reminded us that this Jesus Way that we are seeking to understand, is often presented to us in a simple melody.

This presence was manifested in our response to my challenge to donate 100 books for children who don't have any. One person asked me during the week, "How do you know you can get that many books from so small a congregation?" I responded "Done deal; we'll have way more than 100." And, of course, as usual, CCL responded. Why? Because somebody (in this case many kids and a great organization) needed us. As I said - done deal.

The presence of the Holy Spirit was with me too yesterday. You all know I don't write out my Messages. And, as I have told some, I swear it is true that sometime during the week my message comes to me; just shows up in my brain. And writes itself.

The main body of my message was a simple one to construct. I knew I wanted to remind all of the last four weeks, that taken as a whole could be seen as a path for us, too. Jesus' baptism, the start of his ministry, can be a reminder to us that we can renew our baptismal covenant as often as we want, and start our own ministry over and over if we want. The key is to be reminded we ALL have a ministry.

The wedding at Cana, the first miracle, helped us realize we all do miracles everyday. Heck, we were witnessing one that morning when 200 books showed up in response to a request for 100. Not a miracle? I beg to differ. A beautiful miracle.

And then Jesus announcing to his friends and the people that 'I am who God says I am' turns for us into a reaffirmation of being who God says WE are...that our intentionally saying to God and others 'I am who you say I am' helps us along the way, this Jesus Way.

But when we do these things-renew our baptismal covenant of our ministry, continue to do miracles, and continue to say we are who God intended us to be - we change the world. And when we change the world, really change the world grounded in love, what is going to happen?

People are going to want to throw us off the cliff.

While I had my notes ready to preach, it wasn't until Sunday morning that it occurred to me-so I could add it to my notes for the message-that what Jesus wants of us is to be cliff dwellers. He calls us to welcome the discomfort that comes from following him. After all, we are here, we exist, to change the world, to say to the world we aren't what YOU say we are. We are what HE says we are.

But nothing left us with the presence more yesterday than when we sang the Christ Church anthem, the song in every one of our services, sung every single week, communion and Morning Prayer alike: 'Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place...' When Betty struck the chords for Surely the Presence and I looked out at all the faces with their eyes closed singing the words they know by heart, I lost it. I couldn't sing. I couldn't see. I can't see now as I write this.

After the service Gail told me she had the same problem. She was so overwhelmed by the presence of the spirit in the church she worried she would not be able to say the final blessing.

Christ Church has become a place where Jesus resides in us as community and in each of us individually in a more powerful way than any of us thought possible. And we are beginning to bring our message to more people who we know benefit from being with others who seek to understand His call and respond to it. (Yesterday we had 42 people…double what we had a year ago at this time.)

Let us each dedicate ourselves to seeking this presence every day, all day, in everything we do.

Let us be cliff dwellers.

I love you all,

Kurt
NO CHURCH 1/13/19
Due to the snow (and our Sr. Warden telling us Route 15 is like an ice rink) we have decided to not have church today. So please be careful and we'll see you next week. Also as a reminder Morning Prayer and Bible Study resume Wednesday starting at 10am and next Sunday we will have Communion with the Rev. Tom Prinz celebrating with us.

Kurt will be posting a short Morning Prayer service on the web site sometime this morning, that can be prayed alone or with your family so you can still have church!

Be safe.
To our Christ Church Family:

We don’t have to tell you snow is coming–in some places it’s already here. There are conflicting reports on the amount we can expect so as of right now church is ON for tomorrow but that might change. Tomorrow morning before 8:30am we will send another email and post an announcement on the web site on a final determination about having church or not. If we decide that we are able to have church please use every caution if you decide to attend. Those of you in places you shouldn’t venture out from— DON’T!

If Church is cancelled, look to the web site under Kurt’s News and Notes (middle of the home page). There he will post a simple morning prayer service we can all do at our leisure (great for families to do together) as well as part of his Message on the Baptism of Our Lord.

Let’s hope we see you tomorrow.

[01/29/21]   A Prayer for Receiving the COVID Vaccine
By Rabbi Naomi Levy

I have been praying for this day and now it is here!
With great excitement, a touch of trepidation
and with deep gratitude
I give thanks for all the scientists who toiled day and night
so that I might receive this tiny vaccination.
That will protect me and all souls around this world.
With the pandemic still raging
I am blessed to do my part of defeat it.
Let this be the beginning of a new day,
a new time of hope, of joy, of freedom
And most of all, of health.
I thank you, God for blessing me with life
For sustaining my life
And for enabling me to reach this awe-filled moment.
Amen

[01/07/21]   From the Diocese of Virginia:

On this Feast of the Epiphany, when we celebrate the visitation of the Wise Ones to the Christ-child and his family in Bethlehem, we have witnessed a very different kind of visitation on our American family in Washington, D.C. Violence has erupted again in our capitol city, threatening lives and tearing the very fabric of our democratic process.

We Bishops in the Diocese of Virginia hold in support and prayer all people who live and work in Washington, and who face the possibility of violence tonight. We pray for all members of the Senate and the House of Representatives whose work has been disrupted and who fear for their safety. We pray for the Capitol police and others who protect lives. We pray for the right transition of leadership that has been interrupted by anger and violence. We pray for all the people of our nation.

We strongly urge our President and all leaders of our nation to work for an end to violence in Washington and anywhere it might erupt in our nation, and to take their part in a peaceful transition of leadership.

Holy God, like the Wise Ones who travelled far to see the face of the living Christ, grant us wisdom, so that we may see the face of Christ in each other, no matter what our differences, and so that we may be voices of wisdom and peace in our land. Let your love be known. Let your will be done on earth, in our nation, as it is in heaven, today, tomorrow and always. Amen.

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." - John 1:5

If you need some food, please come to the church parking lot (14861 NewValley Church Road, Leesburg, Virginia 20176) and help yourself to items in the box. We also welcome food donations, preferably items that will not freeze and rupture in the winter weather. If there is no room in the box, there is a plastic bin at the back door of our parish house; please place items inside the bin. If you could also send us a message when you drop something off there, then someone will come by to put the items inside (so that no country critters help themselves to a snack overnight). Thank you!
