[07/13/21]   Pastor’s Pen: “The Cross and the Christian”

The least popular thing to talk about seems to be the most important thing! When God calls a person to walk with Him, there is a command in play to die to self and take up the cross in order to fulfill it.

The Apostle Paul didn’t downplay the importance of this but magnified it. Though he was formerly a man with a great future in religion and religious politics in his time, he forsook it all to follow the One who constrained him.

He reckoned his former life as completely dead and gone, and he engaged his new life in Christ through the standard of the cross of Christ.

I will ask you, the reader, whether there is any other way to engage the Christian life besides through the standard of the cross.
Is there a way to please God apart from dying to self?
Is there a way to express true faith apart from surrender of ego?
Is there a way to bear spiritual fruit apart from letting your carnal inclinations wither away?

All of those things I listed are what the cross of Christ demand of us.

On the other side of that is righteousness, joy, and peace in the Holy Spirit, as well as a bounty of spiritual fruit for God’s glory.

Interested in God’s glory?
Survey that wonderful cross afresh!

“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭2:20‬ ‭ESV‬‬

[05/22/21]   Visit us TOMORROW, not "someday"!
We have an INCREDIBLE service tomorrow, featuring a visit and presentation from some long-term missionaries, as well as a guest worship team!
STARTS at 11am!

[05/04/21]   Who are you to judge?
Jesus Himself commanded His followers to judge with righteous judgment (John 7:24), and the apostle Paul addressed some specifics when he instructed the Corinthian church (1st Corinthians 5:12) that judgment was specifically for within the church, and not those who have never made a profession of faith in Christ — the argument being that it is unreasonable to expect a non-Christian to act as a Christian, but it is absolutely within reason to expect a Christian to act as one.
We live in a sea of opinions, and there are a lot of bad ones out there. If it isn't the Bible itself, the message is subject to corruption, as it has at that point been mixed with the mind of man.
One of the highest pursuits of a preacher I have been able to discern (and aspire to) is to have more of God's Word in my sermon, and less of my opinions adorning it all.
Any honest preacher would get the sentiment here, even if it isn't their own personal pursuit (which is fine also, as long as they're seeking God's glory and help for God's people in their message.)
For every preacher that seeks to glorify God in what they speak, there certainly are others who seek to exalt the flesh, adore the present worldly systems, or even promote doctrines that are starkly in contrast to the Word of God.
Not only is this happening more often these days, it is increasingly celebrated as being what God is speaking. For those who regularly ingest teachings from prosperity preachers, take special note. It isn't the good thing they say that is problematic, but the good thing they fail to ever mention along the way. If they won't talk about the blood of Jesus Christ, or repentance of sins, or the old nature / new nature, those are flaming red flags, not to be ignored.
As a preacher, I have expressed the warning from my pulpit that we are moving into an age of unprecedented levels of false prophecy, false teaching, and false leaders.
We also live in an age primed for the appearing of the antichrist, as people have increasingly looked to politicians to not simply politic around, but also to provide large-scale solutions to ever-largening problems.
I say what I say now out of an abundance of pastoral concern: be careful.
Be careful what you believe.
Be careful what you let rewire your worldview.
Be careful about how you proceed, and what banners you fly above your head.
Be careful.
Especially you who think that you are standing secure and strong. You be even more careful!
Who are you to judge? You're a responsible person following the actual command of Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior.
You had better be in full judgment mode these days if you will make it to the other side the way you ought to.
