Northern New England Conference of Seventh-day Adventists

Thank you for your support.

NNEC Executive Committee Expresses Support for the Mission of Atlantic Union College

The Executive Committee of the Northern New England Conference met yesterday in regular session to consider and grapple with the many chalenges and opportunities that the conference regularly faces. This committee, comprised mostly of members from around the conference, yesterday considered the news that Atlantic Union College is suspending its baccalaureate program. Below appears the portion of the minutes of the meeting related to the College's decision:

NNEC EXCOM Minutes – excerpt from 02-18-18

Elder Bob Cundiff shared the statement released Friday, February 16, 2018 by the Atlantic Union Conference about the status of operations at Atlantic Union College which acknowledged the official closing of the Baccalaureate program effective at the close of the current school semester. Concern regarding support of the Institution was shared by one and all, prompting a lengthy discussion to more fully understand how NNEC has, and potentially will, support the College moving forward. After varying issues were discussed, committee members felt strongly that sending a message to the Union regarding NNEC’s financial and moral support was their desire. It was then

VOTED that the Northern New England Conference affirms our commitment of the 4% subsidy for 2018. Furthermore, we want to be involved in any dialogue in future discussions relative to higher education in the Atlantic Union.

[02/23/18]   Atlantic Union Conference Executive Committee and Atlantic Union College Board of Trustees Vote to Suspend the Baccalaureate Program at Atlantic Union College

***********************

At the February 2018 committee meetings, both the Atlantic Union Conference Executive Committee and the Atlantic Union College Board of Trustees voted to suspend the baccalaureate program at Atlantic Union College at the end of the current academic semester and phase out the certificate programs in a teach-out manner no later than December 2018, due to financial exigency.

The votes were taken following receipt of an interim report from the Independent Task Force which was commissioned in 2017 by the Atlantic Union Conference Executive Committee to conduct a feasibility study of the college. The results of the feasibility study led to the conclusion that Atlantic Union College should suspend the baccalaureate program at the end of the current academic semester and phase out the certificate programs in a teach-out manner no later than December 2018.

The board of trustees, in cooperation with the Atlantic Union Conference administration, will form a plan to guide the students, faculty, and staff through this transition period. This plan will provide academic options and information to the students, faculty, staff, and larger Atlantic Union College family.

The Atlantic Union Conference will continue to work with the Independent Task Force to conduct a study and further research how Adventist higher education can effectively be delivered to the young people of the Atlantic Union Conference constituency. We solicit your prayers for wisdom as we move forward during this time.

Dr. Roger Bothwell, AUC teacher, preacher, author, friend and lover of Jesus passed away this past Friday. He will be missed by all who knew him and forever remembered for the intimate and caring way that he interacted with each person who he met. His love of Jesus defined his life. One student remarked that she had been a Christian her whole life, but that it was Dr. Bothwell who taught her to fall in love with Jesus.

Over the years many have been blessed to read his online daily devotionals or call his 1-800 number to listen to him speak words of wisdom to those who called. If you are interested, those devotionals are still available on the web. www.rogerbothwell.org

To quote one of his devotionals, Dr. Bothwell said, “Jesus loves you, forgives you from ALL your transgressions and has reserved a place just for you. Your name is already engraved on the door of your heavenly home.”

We look forward to that day when we will be able to knock on his door and be once again greeted with one of his warm smiles. That will be a happy day indeed.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family and we pray that his wife, Ian, their children, and grandchildren will find comfort in their faith and in the loving support of the community of people who loved him.

Thank you, Massachusetts State Representative Harold Naughton for speaking at our Prostate Cancer Awareness event this past Sunday at AUC.

Yesterday I spoke at Atlantic Union College's Prostate Cancer Awareness Day event. Prostate Cancer is the second most common cancer in American men, coming in only after skin cancer. The goal of this event was to increase awareness through educational session with leading doctors and to teach about early detection and treatment for men, their family members and physicians.
