Grace-St. Paul's UMC

Dear Grace-St. Paul’s Family,
We are truly in the midst of an unprecedented time.
I have spent much time in prayer, as well as attempting to gather the best, rational, common-sense guidance regarding COVID-19 coronavirus. That has been a challenge.
As I have reflected, I keep coming back to the reality of the Life Care Nursing Home in Kirkland, Washington. Someone unknowingly carrying COVID-19 walked into that
facility, with many at-risk people, and the results were devastating. The reality is that our congregation is overwhelmingly comprised of those who are at high risk, and our facility does not enable the social distancing guidelines suggested by authorities. Given these factors, I do not feel it’s responsible to risk our congregation to accidental exposure.

Based on this, we will be cancelling worship and all events at Grace-St. Paul’s from March 15-21. This is in an attempt to minimize the possibility of an accidental, unknown
transmission. I anticipate we’ll be able to livestream a worship service on Sunday, March 22; more details will be sent regarding that as the week progresses.

Please know that our inability to gather together physically doesn’t mean we shouldn’t worship our Lord! To assist with that, we’ll be sending a call to worship, prayer, scripture
readings and devotional questions to help guide you as you spend time with God on Sunday morning. The current Hypocrite sermon series, as well as the UMCOR mission
offering, will be postponed and resumed later this spring.

I pray you will also remain faithful in giving your tithes and offerings. While our corporate worship services have paused, God’s work at GSP has not! Please consider mailing your offerings to 40 Church Rd. Jim Thorpe, PA 18229. Thank You!

A closing thought: there’s no doubt we currently face significant uncertainty, even fear. I believe that is the work of the enemy. Know that cancellations are precautions
made with love and concern for the vulnerable among us, trusting that God knows our hearts! We are not yielding to fear, rather we’re acting in love. Yet... it’s often in our
moments of fear that Jesus appears in powerful, uplifting ways (check out John 20:19- 29). Hold on to that in this trying, uncertain time.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Brad

Dear Grace-St. Paul’s Family,
COVID-19 Coronavirus: I imagine those words were completely unfamiliar to you only a few weeks ago, yet are prominent in your thoughts right now. In a very short time this new virus has become a pandemic, causing uncertainty, confusion and fear. As Christians, we know and trust that God is in control, even in moments when our world is chaotic. We also recognize the need to follow the guidance and advice of medical professionals in order to minimize the opportunity for transmission or illness from a highly infectious virus. As per CDC guidance, There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.
In light of the CDC guidance, please take appropriate precautions to help minimize the risk to yourself and others. Those precautions include:
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands • Avoid close contact with people who are sick; stay at home if you are sick or not feeling well
I want you to know we are doing all we can to maintain our ministries and opportunities for worship while taking appropriate precautions in light of the COVID-19 outbreak. At this time, worship will still occur as planned, with alterations that will minimize direct contact with others. PLEASE, if you feel ill, or are at high risk / vulnerable to contract the virus, stay at home. Ministries and events will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, factoring in the most current guidance and input of leaders. Some examples of changes being implemented include:
• Temporarily discontinue passing offering plates in worship. Designated buckets will be placed throughout the sanctuary and offerings can be given when entering or exiting. • Refrain from close personal contact, such as handshakes and hugs • In an abundance of precaution, Coffee and Refreshments will be temporarily discontinued. Worshippers are welcome to chat between worship service if they’d like. • Hand sanitizer will be made available • Ministries that will be canceled include the March 2020 Community Dinner and the 2020 Women’s Ministries Rose Breakfast

Also know that efforts are being made to ensure our GSP facility remains as clean as possible. The Staff of the Penn-Kidder Ministerium Before and Afterschool Program have been wiping down all surfaces touched by the children with disinfectant wipes on a daily basis. Further, our custodian thoroughly cleans our restrooms and common areas weekly, ensuring often-touched surfaces are clean prior to Sunday activities.
In the event Churches are advised to suspend worship services, please be assured I will do all I can to continue to offer worship opportunities and Pastoral care. I am currently working to obtain the resources necessary to livestream a worship service, such that the congregation could continue to worship remotely. While I pray that guidance isn’t necessary, know that GSP will
continue to worship our Lord! Further information will be shared as livestream capability is implemented.
I also encourage you to be attentive to others who may be struggling in this uncertain time. If local schools close, children who receive free lunches will lose that meal. Seniors may also lose access to some sources of assistance. If you become aware of others needing food or assistance, please contact the GSP Office. We’ll do what we can to help.
In closing, hear the words of assurance our Lord gave his disciples just prior to his arrest: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33). Christ Jesus has overcome all! The worst viruses cannot change that. We can place our trust in Jesus and know that Jesus will grant us peace.
Grace and Peace, Pastor Brad

[12/01/19]   We hope this finds you safe and warm at home... Here are some readings/reflection questions for you quiet time at home:

Our scripture readings for today - the first Sunday in Advent - are Isaiah 2:1-5, Romans 13:11-13 and Matthew 24:36-44. After reading the passages, reflect on the following:

~ Jesus says to keep watch; how can we do that? What does it mean to “get your house in order” for the coming of the Lord? Can we ever be perfectly prepared for Christ’s return?

~ Jesus says the coming of the Lord is like a thief in the night. How so… and how does that make you feel?

~ Where do you see God’s grace in the surprise of Advent; in the unexpectedness of Christ’s arrival?

May God Bless each and every one of you in this Advent season.

[12/01/19]   ATTENTION Members and Friends:

There will be ONE SERVICE ONLY @ 9am today.. Communion postponed till next week.. Fellowship, reframe, and Youth Group are cancelled...

As always, anyone who is uncertain should remain safe at home. Reflection questions will be posted later today!

SPECIAL MESSAGE REGARDING WEATHER FOR SUNDAY:

Hello GSP Family,

We hope you enjoyed a meaningful Thanksgiving Day! Given the possibility of winter weather please note the following:
A decision regarding our worship services will be made by 7:30 AM Sunday morning. Note that, depending on the forecast and conditions, we may opt to hold one worship service. If this is the case, and you feel safe/confident traveling, please come out and worship with us - even if it is not the service you typically attend.

Above all, please be safe! If conditions are such that you are not confident traveling, spend the morning at home in prayer and reflection. Our Scriptures for this week are Isaiah 2:1-5, Romans 13:11-14, and Matthew 24:36-44; reflection prompts will be sent out if we need to adjust our schedule. Start your week with God in prayer and scripture… and experience the warmth of the Holy Spirit on a dreary day!

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Brad
