2 Corinthians 3.17
A little bit of current relevance from a not so distant past.
A response from our Synod!
As I type this, situations are changing. A pastor friend who, 18 hours ago was safe and dry, has since been evacuated by boat and taken to dry land. That’s one of many – one of thousands and thousands who have had to be rescued from the rising water that only continues to wreak havoc on the southeast coast of Texas and southwest portion of Louisiana.
We cannot forget that there was first a hurricane bearing down on the cities of Rockport and Port Aransas. At least one member of the synod’s Coordinating Team has lost his home and business in the hurricane. The area is devastated. The entire gulf coast and its people been affected – in some cases, destroyed by this storm system. And now it makes landfall again, in Louisiana.
Both Mission and New Covenant Presbyteries have been in contact with the people from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance since before the storm hit. Each presbytery has their own disaster teams that are working to access the needs of pastors and churches, and in the end, there will be much need.
What can you do?
1. Please don’t send things like clothes and blankets to the Texas coast. The infrastructure it takes to manage these items is just too much right now. If your community is planning to take in evacuees or shelter the newly homeless, they would be the place to send those items.
2. Consider packing and shipping Disaster Kits – Clean up buckets and hygiene kits. https://pda.pcusa.org/page/kits/ These are always needed at times like this.
3. Donate to PDA or directly to Mission (Rockport, Port Aransas) and New Covenant (Houston, Galveston) Presbyteries. Both presbyteries do, or will soon have a button on their webpage for electronic donations. Given the nature of the disaster, it is much faster and more reliable to use this method.
4. Pray. Knowing that those whose lives have been changed by the wind, rain, and fury of the storm have many, many weeks and years of recovery ahead of them. That those of us who have been spared have many, many weeks and years ahead to nurture, assist and support our sisters and brothers in Christ.
Concentration now is rescue and safety of everyone. The lives and safety of people comes first. Checking the status of pastors and their people is difficult with disruptions of communications systems. Yet it has been ongoing, and until the water recedes, it will continue. As it becomes safe to do so, we will be checking the status of their church buildings. You may have heard that the flooding has taken place is areas that have never anticipated it. Few people have flood insurance on their homes and possessions. We already know that there is significant damage to church buildings. PDA’s funding for presbyteries to assist churches is limited. It is difficult at this point to know which churches hold flood insurance, what kind of deductibles they may be facing, or whether rebuilding is feasible.
This is a time to be reminded that, while scope of this disaster and the sorrow that it brings is difficult to wrap our heads around, so is the hope and mercy of our God beyond comprehension. We are to be reminded that the Church is not made up of our buildings. While they may be damaged or full of water – the people are the Church. May we find the strength and perseverance in the coming days, weeks, and years of recovery yet ahead.
When the media leaves the area, and they eventually will, do not forget the people of Southeast Texas.

How can we encourage open dialogue?
nextchurch.net The young adults that I met were yearning for an authentic space to discuss these issues with their peers without fear of a hidden agenda. They were grateful for the opportunity to ask questions like, “How do you decide what to give? How much is enough?”
