Hazel wanted to send a big "Thank you to the youth and all their helpers for sharing the Christmas spirit with carols and baked goodies. It was wonderful to see the love of Christ in your actions!"

I am Home!!! Left Ethiopia at 9:00 a.m. on the 30th and had a wonderful flight on Ethiopian Air. Refueled in Togo and then a straight shot to Newark, NJ. Watched 5 "blockbuster" movies plus several National Geographic shows on wildlife in Africa. When we got to Newark things went south. United Airlines had "equipment" problems and we finally departed Newark for Raleigh 5 hours late. :-{ Thanks to 2 cups of coffee made it home safely. In case you ever fly to Raleigh may I recommend NOT flying United. I have had only problems with flights offered from United. About a year ago had a United flight to Fayetteville cancelled. Had to rent a vehicle and then drove 4 wives of Troopers to Fayetteville. Wanted to share some photos of my brothers and sisters who are refugees of S. Sudan who are living in Ethiopia and are in GREAT need.
Thanks to the musical youth and leaders of Sherwood.not only were blessed by. Their visit. And happy singing,we also enjoyed a Wonderful lunch. Today Thank you all. Love George and Hazel
Greetings from Ethiopia. Can you believe it. Africa at last! I sat next to a man from Kenya who filled me in on much of the refugee situation from his perspective. He now lives in Boston but comes back two or three times a year to work with refugees. Everyone has an opinion but they all agree the suffering has to stop and peace has to break out. They all believe God has to be involved because this is beyond human capacity. These people are such delight. A ready smile and desire to talk and become friends. Folk appreciate we have come to help. We are staying in a church guesthouse which is quite comfortable and safe. Every morning at 10 AM we have teatime. Fresh coffee, tea, bread or sweet rolls. My son, Erik roasts coffee and he gets many of his beans from Ethiopia. He suggested I see a coffee ceremony where they roast the beans in a frying pan. Well I asked about where I could see such a ceremony and they said go to the kitchen. Our cook is roasting coffee in the frying pan. By golly she sure was! And it tasted great. We have been making preparations to go to the refugee camps on Sat. It requires permissions from several different agencies. This is because the Ethiopian government has allowed over 360,000 refugees to live within their borders so we're trying to get all the politics out of the way.... Last night we met with the Dr Legasu, the Sec Gen of the World Council of churches for South Sudan. He and his team had just been to the camps two days before. They provided valuable info on what we could expect in the camps and what they felt were the greatest needs. While many of the refugees arrive malnourished and in desperate need of food, the biggest immediate and long term need is trauma counseling. War, starvation and sexual attacks take a terrible toll. I have been taking lots of pics but especially looking forward to Sat when we get to Gambela and the camps. Please keep the S Sudanese refugees, their hosts and us in your prayers. Grace and peace, Pastor Chip
Tonight Evangelist Perry Allis and I had the privilege of bringing the Word to 70+ maximum security prisoners at Scotland Correctional. These men, incarcerated for a variety of crimes are literally a church behind bars. We spoke about Pentecost and how God filled each of the men and women present with the Holy Spirit and that so empowered these people who had been afraid to go out and spread the Good News became bold and well-spoken in their defense of Jesus. God, through Jesus Christ, had selected uneducated, ordinary men from Galilee to be his disciples. It was these very men (and many women) who were transformed by the power of the Spirit and became champions for their God and their Jesus. God, through his Spirit, put the EXTRA in these ordinary men and made them EXTRAORDINARY in every sense of the word. The great good news for the men tonight, and for you and me, is that that same Holy Spirit is available for you and me today. Those willing to accept Christ as their Savior will be filled with the Holy Spirit and be transformed into mighty men and women of God sent out on missions that can only be completed with the Spirit's help. Thank God for the privilege of being His hands and feet wherever we find ourselves. Great Good News!!!!!!

In the midst of these scary times, we are watching beautiful outpourings of generosity manifest in many different ways- families delivering food to neighbors, people donating and making masks for front line medical workers, even NBA stars covering the lost salaries of arena workers.

It is encouraging to see humans respond to the needs around them in times of crisis. But during this unprecedented historical moment full of countless unknowns, we want to encourage all of you, and us, to continue giving. To hopefully make giving simpler, especially during this time, we now offer giving online. You can go onto our website, www.sherwoodpresbyterian.church, locate the second tab at the top that says “Who We Are” and click on it, which makes a drop down list appear. The last on this list is “Giving”. You will enter in your information. Once it is submitted, you will be contacted by Grace Hobson for a credit card number. We hope this new way is an easier avenue, however, if you still would like to give by cash or check, you are welcome to. You can continue to mail it to the church or to Grace Hobson directly.

We appreciate you and your contributions, declaring boldly that no matter what is going on around you, your ultimate hope and trust is rooted in Christ.

We are invited by the NC Council of Churches to join our neighbors around the world who are calling aloud from their balconies and rooftops across their neighborhoods and cities each evening, to ring out our prayers at noon on May 7th, the National Day of Prayer.

We encourage you to come outside and make a "joyful noise" with a bell (cowbell, dinner bell, schoolhouse bell, etc.) or anything that creates sound.
