FAMILY & FRIENDS DEVOTION TIME! Good Morning…

“FIRE! DIVISION! DECISION!”

LUKE 12:49-53 [Jesus said,] "I have come to set the world on fire, and I wish it were already burning! I have a terrible baptism of suffering ahead of me, and I am under a heavy burden until it is accomplished. Do you think I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I have come to divide people against each other! From now on families will be split apart, three in favor of me, and two against — or two in favor and three against. 'Father will be divided against son and son against father; the mother against daughter and daughter against mother; and mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.'"

KEY THOUGHT: Jesus demonstrated God's love in so many ways during His earthly ministry. He will also accomplish an incredible blessing of love when He comes to take God's children home to be with Him forever. However, the cost of those blessings is high — high for Him, high for the Father, and high for those who follow Him. Jesus left heaven, came to earth and died a horrible death to provide these blessings. The Father withheld His power and allowed those He created to do such horrid things to His Son. So, we must not be surprised at the powerful language Jesus uses here. His ministry calls for a decision, a radical decision, to be made. Either He is God with us, or He is an impostor. Either He is Christ, God's Messiah, and our Savior, or He is delusional. Either He is Lord, King of our hearts, and of all creation, or He is a liar. Making a decision about Him is divisive. It will divide families and households. It will be politically incorrect because it doesn't allow for alternatives. As Jesus spoke to His disciples, He also speaks to us. If we decide for Him, our decision will not make everyone happy and won't lead to everyone's liking us. A passionate disciple of Jesus will not be appreciated by all — maybe not by most — but will surely be appreciated and rewarded by God!

TODAY'S PRAYER: Father, please give me the courage to decide to follow Jesus fully. Then, dear Father, please give me the wisdom to know how to deal lovingly with those who cannot accept my decision, my passion, and my discipleship. In Jesus' name. Amen.

FAMILY & FRIEND DEVOTION TIME! Good Morning…

“WHAT ARE YOU LIVING FOR?”

LUKE 12:27-32 [Jesus said,] "Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don't work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, He will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? And don't be concerned about what to eat and what to drink. Don't worry about such things. These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers all over the world, but your Father already knows your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and He will give you everything you need. So, don't be afraid, little flock. For it gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom."

KEY THOUGHT: What's the bottom line in these words of Jesus? It is this: Don't be afraid to live for the Kingdom as your highest priority and your most pressing concern. God takes care of things much less important than us in a way far finer than we could provide for ourselves. We're more important to God than those things. So, let's give the Father the joy of giving us the Kingdom by making it our strongest desire. Let Him take care of the "little stuff" as we pursue the "Kingdom stuff."

TODAY'S PRAYER: Holy Father give me a passion for Your Kingdom and Your righteousness. Make that passion burn inside me until Your Kingdom becomes my highest call. I know that my worries about other things will be driven out by the proper passion for what You long to give me. In Jesus' name. Amen

[04/06/20]   FAMILY & FRIENDS DEVOTION TIME! Good Morning…

“RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL”

LUKE 11:50-51 [Jesus said,] "As a result [of honoring their ancestors who killed the prophets], this generation will be held responsible for the murder of all God's prophets from the creation of the world — from the murder of Abel to the murder of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, it will certainly be charged against this generation."
KEY THOUGHT: Wow! Jesus' judgment on these hypocritical religious leaders is severe. Why is His pronouncement so harsh? How can He say such things? I believe there are three reasons why Jesus' words are so strong:
1. Jesus Christ, the Son of God (who is greater than the prophets and great souls of the past), came to the people, and they will murder Him to protect their religion.
2. Jesus wanted them to realize how utterly flawed their approach to religion had become.
3. Jesus wanted us to see how horrible protecting our religious preconceptions can be, rather than being shaped by the truth.
4. Jesus confronted them with idolizing the past without recognizing their connection to the sins of the past.
His words were sharp and harsh. However, they were true and needed, then, as well as now!
TODAY'S PRAYER: Father, I am convicted of how easily I can trade my vibrant faith in You for a flawed and self-protecting "religiousness." Please call me away from any false motives, pretenses, and convictions so that I can serve You with an undivided heart. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

[05/22/19]   FAMILY & FRIENDS DEVOTION TIME! Good Morning…

“IF YOU SAY SO!”

LUKE 5:2-7[Jesus] noticed two empty boats at the water's edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So, He sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there. When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, "Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish." "Master," Simon replied, "we worked hard all last night and didn't catch a thing. But if You say so, I'll let the nets down again." And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.

KEY THOUGHT: Simon (Peter) was a fisherman—Being a fisherman was his life—Being a fisherman was his trade. So, when Jesus told him to fish in a certain place and at a certain time that Peter "knew" were wrong from all of his experience, he must have had to swallow hard to follow this carpenter's instructions. But, he did! He basically told Jesus, "If YOU say to do it, then I'll do it!" Let's be honest. There are times when what Jesus tells us to do seems at best counter-intuitive and sometimes crazy. Just a cursory reading of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) gives us more than enough to chew on for a lifetime. That's when our love for Jesus and our submission to His lordship really are tested. Are we willing to be like Peter and say, "Lord, if You say so, I'll do it?"

TODAY'S PRAYER: Give me a pliable heart and a willing spirit, O God, to obey what Your Son has taught and to do what His lordship calls me to do. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

I leave you with this quote—If you fail, never give up because F.A.I.L. means “First Attempt in Learning”; End is not the end, in fact E.N.D. means “Effort Never Dies”; If you get No as an answer, remember N.O. means “Next Opportunity” so let’s be positive.

[03/19/18]   FAMILY DEVOTION TIME! Good Morning…

“CONCERN FOR THE CROWDS”

MARK 6:35-36 It was now late in the day. So Jesus' followers came to Him. They said, "No people live in this place. And it is already very late. So send the people away. They need to go to the farms and towns around here to buy some food to eat."

KEY THOUGHT: At first glance, and because we know the outcome of the story, we might miss the concern the disciples have for the crowd. They are genuinely concerned for the physical well being of the folks who are following Jesus. Sometimes we get so caught up in the spiritual talk and show of church that we forget the very real physical needs of each other. However, Christianity—being a follower of the Christ—is not just about spiritual talk and spiritual intentions. It is offering genuine care and concern. Little do the disciples know that Jesus will raise their expectations of what that means before this incident is over!

TODAY'S PRAYER: Father, help my heart to be open to the physical needs around me, and help me to do something to help the people with those needs. In Jesus' name. Amen.
