January 14th 2021 Update!

Psalm 29:11 tells us, Let the Lord give strength to his people! Let the Lord bless his people with peace! This is the final verse of a psalm focusing on the Lordโ€™s voice, which is always above all the other voices, and particularly is louder than any storm. No question, itโ€™s been a bit stormy for many of us and no matter if our storms are individual or communal, we can rely and trust in the words of the Psalmist. The Lord gives strength to us and will bless us with peace. May we hold fast to this truth as we navigate the storms.

The Leadership Team met Wednesday afternoon and determined that it is best to wait for a return to in-person worship, with a hopeful date of February 7 to resume together in the gym and sanctuary. The numbers continue to trend in the wrong directions, and we believe through more vaccines becoming available over the course of the next few weeks, we will be safer waiting to return to in-person worship in February. Please know we are all desperate to get back in together once again, and we are equally desperate to do no harm. We encourage folks to pay attention to the helpful information being shared by our County and the hospital, as vaccines are being shared by both for community. Please be sure to see the information listed below for more details on how to receive a vaccination.

Last week, we recognize there were some glitches with the livestreaming, and Justin was quickly investigating all the angles to see what was going on. There was denial of services attack on Amazon webservers, which is used to host our livestream for both our Facebook and YouTube accounts. Thankfully it was resolved in time for the 11am worship. Thanks for your patience โ€“ and praying for us as we continue to do our best to offer online worship.

What a celebration this past Sunday in our virtual worship to seek Godโ€™s blessings upon the 150 Koala cards that are being distributed to the frontline folks at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Thanks for all of you who have faithfully supported this ministry and know we will happily receive any additional funds youโ€™d like to share, so that we can continue to share more Koala Love with others.

Speaking of Cape Fear Valley, if you didnโ€™t see or hear about our efforts to produce a small prayer book for them, let me tell you about it! From now until next Monday, January 18th, you have the opportunity to help our friends in the medical community find their hope in Christ by writing a prayer, sharing your favorite verse and what it means to you, a thank you message, or writing a short devotion that will be compiled in a booklet and made available to the staff at Cape Fear. Through a collaborative effort with our friends next door at First Baptist Church, we pray this booklet will be a hope-filled and uplifting resource for the staff at Cape Fear Valley. So pray and ask God what He is laying on your heart to share. Please be sure and send your submission to Rev. Lisa Craver ([email protected]). If you have any questions, please contact the church office (910-483-2343) and we'll be glad to assist.

Finally, friends, I share with you some incredible news from the Finance Committeeโ€™s meeting held Tuesday night. After reviewing the end of year financial report, we praise God for the good news of finishing the year in good shape financially, as we ended in the positive with $472.65! 2020 was certainly a challenging year, however, your faithfulness in giving and supporting the ministries and missions God calls us to share through Hay Street was simply amazing! We encourage you to continue your faithfulness in giving as we keep adapting and creating ways to extend ministry throughout the community. Thanks be to God for a remarkable achievement!

Grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus. Thank you for the prayers and striving to do no harm, as we rejoice in vaccines becoming available to more and more folks.

Youth are meeting on Sunday evenings to continue the series Jesus and Your Influence. More information is available on the Youth tab of our website, or by emailing [email protected].

Hope for Heroes!

From now until January 18th you have the opportunity to help our front-line medical community find their hope in Christ by writing a prayer, sharing your favorite verse and what it means to you, or even writing a short devotion that will be compiled in a booklet and available to those medical personnel! This is something that is intended to be uplifting and hope-filled, so pray and ask God what He is laying on your heart to share to our folks at Cape Fear Valley - and in turn they can share with others!

If this is an opportunity you would like to participate in, please send your submission to Rev. Lisa Craver ([email protected]). If you have any questions, please contact the church office (910-483-2343) and we'll be glad to assist.

God bless you!

Update from the Leadership Team re: Christmas Eve and Sunday Services

The Leadership Team met this afternoon and shares the following updates:

Beth spoke about the Leadership Team reviewing the recent decisions made by the Cumberland County Schools and the Courthouse, with respect to the increased concerns regarding COVID-19 spread. She also reported how we have looked at the gatherings of those throughout the community, speaking with other leaders about their decisions, and our efforts to follow the Governor's guidelines.

Diane spoke about the medical insights we have been reviewing on a weekly basis. Cases are increasing both county- and state-wide, and the importance of following these metrics weekly. She highlighted the hospitals becoming more overwhelmed with patients and the Leadership Team's concern for everyone's safety, especially as we anticipated Christmas Eve worship.

After careful discernment and prayerful consideration of all the realities of our current cotext, David shared the Leadership Team has determined it is best for Hay Street to return to a virtual only presence for the next three weeks. Christmas Eve worship will be livestreamed this Thursday, December 24 at 5:30pm. Sunday worship for December 27 and January 3 will also be livestreamed, with the hope we can safely return to in-person worship on January 10. The Leadership Team will re-evaluate our status on January 4, to determine our next steps.

Thank you for the prayers and striving to do no harm, as we rejoice in the vaccines becoming available to more and more folks. Let us all keep waiting and watching for the joy of Christmas, as we anticipate celebrating the birth of God's only Son, Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace!

Reverse Advent Bags 2020

Here's an update from our Reverse Advent Bags from Trinity UMC. We had a little over a week to get this accomplished this year, and Hay Street turned out for it! You have been a blessing to families in our area, and we thank you for your generosity and willingness to help those in need.

Leadership Team Update - 12/16/2020

This week's video clip includes Beth Keever, Diane Parfitt, and Pastor David, reviewing the most recent Leadership Team decisions regarding Sunday worship. The Team decided to hold Sunday services in-person this week, Dec 20, reminding those wishing to attend to follow the safety protocols we have in place for everyone. It's imperative that we keep wearing our masks for the entire worship service, waiting 6' between each other, and washing our hands with the sanitizer stations at our entranceways.

This Sunday, we will remind folks to depart the gym/sanctuary immediately after worship has ended. We will be taking additional measures at the end of worship to help congregants depart the gym and sanctuary in safe ways. Ushers will assist with dismissing each section in the sanctuary, one at a time, asking congregants to leave via the nearest exit, rather than walking across the sanctuary to another door. This will decrease folks having to walk past others on their way out.

The Leadership Team will meet again next Monday, Dec 21 at 4pm, to determine our comfortability with holding in-person Christmas Eve services. Staff will continue to plan for two services, at 5:30pm and 8pm, with overflow in the gym if necessary for the 5:30pm service.

Thanks for your continued faithfulness in doing no harm!

Advent Bags Invite - Trinity & Hay Street UMC Mission

Reverse Advent Bags
๏ปฟ
Restore us, O God of hosts;
let your face shine, that we may be saved.
Psalm 80:7

Trinity United Methodist Church on Raeford Road, with our own Rev. Joel Wise (former drummer in the Praise Band), is in dire need of more supplies for their church food pantry (57 families instead of the usual 40 families partake in November.) Your Outreach Committee has decided to once again appeal to congregation members to participate in the Reverse Advent Bag ministry (usually done for Person Street UMC), which is not open due to Covid restrictions.

Advent bags containing a list of 18 items needed will be available at both worship services this coming Sunday, Dec. 6th, at the exit doors. There will also be an opportunity for those not attending worship services to pick up an Advent bag, take a peek at the sanctuary decorations, and perhaps say a prayer on Monday, Dec. 7th from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Please refrain from attending if you have been exposed to anyone with COVID or are displaying any symptoms. Sam and Marcia Stryker will be at the portico entrance to open the door, take temperatures, check for masks, and make sure social distancing protocols are followed.

Please return your filled Advent Bag no later than Sunday, Dec. 13th, to the church portico entrance so we can get them to Trinity United Methodist for their Thursday, Dec. 17th, Food Pantry distribution day. You can take bags to the church earlier than Dec. 13th, just by ringing the doorbell at the portico and then placing them on or near the church pew under the television. All Advent Bags will be blessed at the church services on that day, and then sent on to needy families in this very difficult time for so many. Thank you for considering this Outreach project!
