Cumberland’s Village Gathers to Prepare for ‘The Great Comeback’
Manny Scott urges the village to ‘be salty’ and support the needs of students

Fayetteville, N.C. — Nearly 180 community members, parents, educators and staff joined forces this morning to discuss how ‘the Cumberland County Schools (CCS) village’ can work together to increase students’ success in the classroom and beyond.

Manny Scott, an original Freedom Writer whose story is told in part in the 2007 hit movie, “Freedom Writers,” headlined the event. While sharing his personal journey, he spoke about the importance of community partners supporting schools. By age 16, Scott’s story was almost over: his father was incarcerated, he dropped out of school, had lived in 26 places and his best friend had been brutally murdered. Finally, however, with the help of a committed community, he turned the page and began writing new, more fulfilling chapters in his life – chapters filled with healing, hope, perseverance and possibility.

After referencing the old adage, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink,” Scott shared some insight that he received from an individual some time ago, “But ... I learned that yes, you can if you use a salt lick...” Scott went on to share, “If things get salty, students will get thirsty, and leaders can give them ‘the water’ they will need to be successful.” He closed his presentation by urging everyone to “be salty” and to do their part to support students in Cumberland County.

In alignment with priority four of the district’s strategic plan, which focuses on strengthening community, business, university, municipal and military partnerships, district leaders hosted this event to kick off the Committed Community Partnerships program for the 2021-2022 school year. During the event, participants learned about needs throughout the school system and how they could get involved in order to help build student success.

CCS Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr., closed the meeting with a Call to Action: “Today, I am asking everyone to complete the ‘Committed Community Call to Action’ form. Despite the challenges that COVID-19 has thrown our way, our village has remained unwavering in supporting the needs of our students. We need your continued support in our schools to ensure that we ‘come back’ stronger than ever before. You are already working alongside us, and for that, I say ‘thank you.’ The work you are doing in our community, in our schools and for our students is appreciated and needed.”

Citizens who are interested in partnering with Cumberland County Schools for student success are invited to complete the “Committed Community Call to Action” form: http://bit.ly/theccsvillage. District staff will work to match partners with schools in the district based on their needs.

BALM IN GILEAD “DAILY INSPIRATION"

He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. Revelation 21:4

Death is not the end for Christians. Oh, no doubt, it is still a time of sharp loss, acute pain, and a throbbing ache that lingers for years and sometimes a lifetime. Perhaps there is no greater sorrow than what is felt over the death of a child.

But woven into the heartache, there is a glorious hope for all who know God and have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ. Death is not the final chapter of life, but rather a doorway into an eternity with God, where every longing of the human spirit is met and fulfilled.

Heaven is a place of no more tears. Death truly is different for God's children.

PRAYER: Father, in Jesus’ Name, thank You for the gift of eternal life and the promise of being face-to-face with You in heaven. I am so thankful that Jesus is Lord over all, and that includes my life! Your Word is coming to pass at a rapid pace in these end times: Darkness is increasing; morals are sliding; laws are changing for the worse; and society is rapidly degenerating.

But seated above them all is Jesus — the King of the kings of the earth. When all is said and done, rulers may have a temporary say-so in the affairs of man, but Jesus ultimately rules over all. Help me not to despair when I see evil prosper and to remember that Jesus has not lost His grip on the situation. He really IS Lord over all!

Please help me to live soberly and to invest not only in the present, but also in the eternity that is to come. I don’t want to be among those who lived only for the present and therefore suffered loss because they forgot to invest in Heaven. Teach me how to manage and increase the material possessions You have given me so that I can use them to increase my wealth in Heaven. I am grateful for the things I own, but I am more thankful for the souls who are in Heaven because I used my resources to invest in eternity. Help me to use my life wisely and to live as I ought to live in light of eternity. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen!

BALM IN GILEAD “DAILY INSPITRATION”

You do not have, because you do not ask God. James 4:2

“Prayer is the way and means God has appointed for the communication of the blessings of His goodness to His people.” Arthur W. Pink

God blesses us every day with things we don't necessarily ask for, things we might take for granted: a place to live, fresh air, the beauty of nature, friends and family. But for some blessings, He chooses to make us part of the process by encouraging us to ask for what we need and want. And the truth is that we experience life and blessings more fully when we look to God for all our wants and needs, either through expressing gratitude or petitioning Him for our needs.

If you're hurting for something today, ask God for it. And if you're not, thank Him for what you have. You'll find your life more richly blessed - even if only from an improved attitude. Best yet, your whole being will be permeated with an awareness of God's presence and goodness.

PRAYER: Lord, thank You for blessing me. Help me open my heart and needs to You today. I am making the decision to turn up my fervency in prayer! You are telling me to pray consistently and persistently and to press in harder than ever before, so that is what I am going to do. If there are issues in my life that are blocking the answers to my prayers, please reveal them to me, and I will surrender them to You. With the help of Your Spirit, I will stay in faith with a watchful eye for the answer I have sought from You. Right now by faith, I thank You in advance for the answer I am seeking. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen!

BALM IN GILEAD “DAILY INSPIRATION”

Thus says the Lord to you: Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 2 Chr. 20:15

Have you surrendered to what God has called you to do? Matthew 10:39: “…He that loseth his life for My sake shall find it.” Pay close attention to these words, for they are so very important if you really want to experience God’s fullness during your life journey. The word “loseth” means to release — as to release one’s rights to something. It is the picture of the full surrender of one’s life. But the key is not just forfeiting your own dreams and desires, but rather doing it “for Jesus’ sake.”

The word “find” means to find or to discover. It is the jubilant expression of one who shouts out, “I found it! By asking us to release or surrender our dreams to Him, He is never trying to take something from us; He wants to give us something wonderful. But to receive what He desires to give, we first have to release what we were holding on to and surrender to what He wants to do in and through us.

What about you? What is God asking you to release so He can give you something far greater? I assure you that God is not trying to deprive you of anything. He wants to give you something bigger and better than your imagination could ever conceive. He simply needs your agreement to release your own ideas and to surrender to what He has waiting for you. When you step out of your own realm into Jesus’ realm of possibilities, you’ll find yourself forever grateful that He gave you the courage to say yes when His call to “lose,” or surrender your life came to you!

PRAYER: Father, in Jesus’ Name, this is my surrender. I lay down my earthly weapons. I lay down my striving. I lay down my attempts to win my own battles. I cannot win on my own. But You can, and the battle belongs to You. I surrender all to You. I boast only about Your goodness, love, and strength. Father, I don’t want to hold on to my life and, as a result, miss the great adventure You have planned for me and my family. Forgive me for not trusting You — and help me put all fear and doubt aside as I “kiss the ground” of my calling. Help me allow Your power and love to sink deep into my heart for what You are asking me to do. I repent for hesitating and holding back out of a sense of self-preservation and a fear of the unknown. Today I fully surrender my life and my future to You. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen!
