Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque burns at the same time as fire engulfs Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris

The Al-Aqsa Mosque sits on top of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. News of the incident at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam and central to the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict, was largely overshadowed by a much larger blaze engulfing the Notre Dame Cathedral at the same time.

[03/03/19]   To our Fayetteville Neighbors:

There is a lady in a wheelchair sitting in our church parking lot. Please know that we are monitoring her situation. Church members have checked on her. I have spoken with city officials about her. They know who she is, they are aware that she is there, and they are keeping tabs on her. She will not accept help from the police or the EMS. They ask that we just let her remain there as long as she is comfortable, and they tell me she will move on to some other spot in the city after a while. 911 and emergency services have received multiple reports about her.

People are stopping to share food and water with her, and that is fine to do, just keep in mind she is a transient with no place to store anything of a perishable nature. The authorities do know her and they are monitoring her well-being. Blessings.

NCC UMC Church and Society

The attachment has been prepared by The General Board of Church and Society of The United Methodist Church to help voters make choices that align with the Social Principles in The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church.

There is a summary statement from the Social Principles on a number of topics currently facing our nation, along with a space for you to make notes about each candidate's position and how that candidate is in agreement with or is opposed to the stance set forth in the Social Principles.

Remember that our Social Principles provide guidance on many issues using the Biblical texts and Biblical scholarship to help us apply Scripture to present-day situations. The Social Principles have been drafted by scholars specializing in Old and New Testament, in theology, in Christian ethics, in Church History, in political science, in social science, and a number of other disciplines.

You are encouraged to look carefully at the summary statements from the Social Principles and attempt to apply our United Methodist teachings about the world and God's vision for the world when you visit the ballot box. Blessings!

Voter's Guide Based on the
UM Social Principles

"I met those of our society [i.e., Methodist Christians] who had votes in the ensuing election, and advised them: (1) To vote without fee or reward, for the person they judged most worthy. (2) To speak no evil of the person they voted against. (3) To take care their spirits were not sharpened against those that voted on the other side." – John Wesley’s Journal, Oct. 3, 1774
Wesley’s words of guidance stand true for today as much as they did in 1774. The North Carolina Conference Board of Church & Society has developed a Voter’s Guide based on the Social Principles of the United Methodist Church. This guide lays out a summary of some resolutions and positions in the structured order of the Book of Resolutions and Social Principles. It will cover only those issues that are currently factors in this election cycle.

Instructions for use are included so you can determine how closely a candidate’s position aligns with the Social Principles. Then, GO VOTE!

[06/20/18]   I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be quick to testify against the sorcerers, the adulterers, those swearing falsely, against those who cheat the day laborers out of their wages as well as oppress the widow and the orphan, and against those who brush aside the foreigner and do not revere me, says the Lord of heavenly forces. - Malachi 3:5

[06/20/18]   Judgment will come on those who greeted people who weren’t like them as enemies. But these people first gave feasts to welcome those who did right and shared with them the blessings of the land. But then they began to force the strangers to do hard labor. - Wisdom 19:15-16

[06/20/18]   She should have a reputation for doing good: raising children, providing hospitality to strangers, washing the feet of the saints, helping those in distress, and dedicating herself to every kind of good thing. - 1 Timothy 5:10

[06/20/18]   Contribute to the needs of God’s people, and welcome strangers into your home. - Romans 12:13

[06/20/18]   I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. - Matthew 25:35

[06/20/18]   Don’t oppress the widow, the orphan, the stranger, and the poor; don’t plan evil against each other! - Zechariah 7:10

[06/20/18]   In contrast, punishments rained down upon the sinners, but not before they were given a clear warning through violent thunder. It was right for them to suffer for their evil deeds and for their hatred of the immigrants in their midst. - Wisdom 19:13

[06/20/18]   The important people of the land have practiced extortion and have committed robbery. They’ve oppressed the poor and mistreated the immigrant. They’ve oppressed and denied justice. - Ezekiel 22:29

[06/20/18]   [Evil rulers,] in you [the people] treat father and mother with contempt. In you they oppress immigrants and deny the rights of orphans and widows. - Ezekiel 22:7

[06/20/18]   No, if you truly reform your ways and your actions; if you treat each other justly; if you stop taking advantage of the immigrant, orphan, or widow; if you don’t shed the blood of the innocent in this place, or go after other gods to your own ruin, only then will I dwell with you in this place, in the land that I gave long ago to your ancestors for all time. - Jeremiah 7:5-7

[06/20/18]   The Lord: who protects immigrants, who helps orphans and widows, but who makes the way of the wicked twist and turn! - Psalm 146:9

[06/20/18]   “Cursed is anyone who obstructs the legal rights of immigrants, orphans, or widows.” All the people will reply: “We agree!” - Deuteronomy 27:19

[06/20/18]   Whenever you are reaping the harvest of your field and you leave some grain in the field, don’t go back and get it. Let it go to the immigrants, the orphans, and the widows so that the Lord your God blesses you in all that you do. Similarly, when you beat the olives off your olive trees, don’t go back over them twice. Let the leftovers go to the immigrants, the orphans, and the widows. Again, when you pick the grapes of your vineyard, don’t pick them over twice. Let the leftovers go to the immigrants, the orphans, and the widows. - Deuteronomy 24:19-21

[06/20/18]   Don’t obstruct the legal rights of an immigrant or orphan. Don’t take a widow’s coat as pledge for a loan. - Deuteronomy 24:17

[06/20/18]   He enacts justice for orphans and widows, and he loves immigrants, giving them food and clothing. - Deuteronomy 10:18

[06/20/18]   Any immigrant who lives with you must be treated as if they were one of your citizens. You must love them as yourself, because you were immigrants in the land of Egypt; I am the Lord your God. - Leviticus 19:34

[06/20/18]   Don’t oppress an immigrant. You know what it’s like to be an immigrant, because you were immigrants in the land of Egypt. - Exodus 23:9

[06/20/18]   Don’t mistreat or oppress an immigrant, because you were once immigrants in the land of Egypt. - Exodus 22:21

[06/20/18]   “Cursed is anyone who obstructs the legal rights of immigrants, orphans, or widows.” All the people will reply: “We agree!” - Deuteronomy 27:19

[06/20/18]   Lord, avenging God—
avenging God, show yourself!
Rise up, judge of the earth!
Pay back the arrogant exactly what they deserve!
How long will the wicked—oh, Lord!—
how long will the wicked win?
They spew arrogant words;
all the evildoers are bragging.
They crush your own people, Lord!
They abuse your very own possession.
They kill widows and immigrants;
they murder orphans...

Can a wicked ruler be your ally;
one who wreaks havoc by means of the law?
The wicked gang up against the lives of the righteous.
They condemn innocent blood.
But the Lord is my fortress;
my God is my rock of refuge.
He will repay them for their wickedness,
completely destroy them because of their evil.
Yes, the Lord our God will completely destroy them.

From Psalm 94

The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church

[06/20/18]   Para. 160.E
