Yesterday's post was for "The Word" Thursday. Today's post is for "Fun Friday."

Here are two suggestions for how you can “Pray Without Ceasing:” 1. Begin and end each day with a brief prayer. 2. Set your alarm and at the top of every hour thank God for something, lift up someone by name, or ask God for guidance about a situation.

John Wesley UMC - Fayetteville, NC

Oral history passed down by the charter members of John Wesley relates that in 1923 John Wesley had its beginning when Mrs. Belle Thompson McCallum and her husband started a Sunday School in their home on Shuford Street for the children who lived near her in the neighborhood known as Evans Hill. She was soon joined by these early founding families, Tuck Leach, Mary McNeill Cobb and Duncan Cobb, Mattie Ray McCollum and John McCollum, Tony McCormick, Eva McEachern Adams and Clarence Adams, Mary Galbreath Watson and William Watson, Sr., Rufus McDougal and Watkin Brown. These founding families were related; mostly cousins; and had come from Mt. Zion in Red Springs, NC; Salem, Beauty Spot and Cedar Grove in the Rowland area; and St. George in Maxton, NC. They missed the fellowship in the Methodist Church since moving to Fayetteville, NC and the Evans Hills community.

Late in 1923; outgrowing the McCallum home, these members moved their fellowship to a house on the corner of Evans Avenue and McLean Street. Here they were joined by others including Mrs. D.A. Bryant, a native of Texas, who had come int he fall of 1923 as the Matron of Girls at the Norma School that is known today as Fayetteville State University. She was the first person to record the history of John Wesley Church. Later a house, one block way, on Frolic Street, was purchased as a permanent place of worship.

Under the Reverend W.T. Brown, who was appointed in 1951, the first money for a new church was set aside. In 1954, the Reverend Robert B. McRae came to guide the members of Wesley Chapel toward a new church building. Each family was asked to donate 100 bricks toward the construction of the new church. On November 19, 1958, the congregation of a round 300 went into a new place of worship on the corner of Frolic Street and Cumberland Street. The name of the church was changed to John Wesley. The next appointment to John Wesley was W.R. Royster in 1961.

In 1963, the Reverend James H. McCallum was sent to John Wesley. In 1968, the all Black Central Jurisdiction was merged into the North Carolina, Western North Carolina and Virginia Annual Conferences. At the Annual Conference in June 1968, John Wesley became part of the Fayetteville District.

John Wesley UMC is located at 616 Cumberland Street, Fayetteville, NC under the leadership of Dr. Donna M. Thompson.
